Shawn Thornton will not be returning to the Bruins

He played 82 games, so of course he'd be among the team leaders in these categories.

Doesn't mean he's a good or effective hitter. He's a decent PK man, but our PK wasn't that good when it counted in the postseason.

Highest PK time per game as well. Still has the best gva to tka ratio too. Only forwards who really did better in hits per game are Abdelkader, Tootoo, Helm and Jurco. So basically Miller is our best 4th liner checker at the moment. I won't claim he's a bigger hitter, but the kid grinds, is fast, and smart in the D zone. He's a great PK man.

I heard Derek Dorsett could be moved from the Rangers. He's what we need on our fourth line. Can play a regular shift, hits everything, and chips in a point here and there.

I highly highly doubt that the Rangers are going to move him, at least not till McIlrath is ready their team is soft and without Dorsett they are even softer. The funny thing is, they are already rumored to be on the Thornton sweepstakes it's like the Rangers never learn.

Goons and big hits are being phased out because of the concussion lawsuits, both the ones against the NHL and the big settlement with the NFL.

What you're saying is true, but does anyone else out there getting tired of players taking liberties (Brooks Orpik, or Matt Cooke for example) ?

The knuckle dragger in me would rather see justice served on ice instead of some board room in NYC.

Those guys won't fight an enforcer. They're smart enough to know they'd get pummeled.

That's the benefit of having guys like McGrattan on the roster if you take liberties they are not going to ask if you want to fight them, they jump you MacIntyre style. All I can say is watch Marchand bringing a much cleaner game now, because Lucic has been told to fight less and Chiarelli doesn't want Chara to fight either. Thornton is a very special player sometimes - more often than not - father time just sucks.

Special how? I get that you like enforcers, and I'm certainly not going to try and talk you out of it, but you're starting to inflate Thornton's qualities into something mythic. Even as far as enforcers go he's not all that great.

- Leadership

- Physicality

- Can play the game (watch his penalty against Pavelec that was some serious hockeyskill right there)

- fight

I know a lot of people think Thornton is like Scott but the guy can/could play on a fourth line role. Guy changed the whole dynamic against Vancouver in 2011 and that team was loaded with talent. Finding enforcers like him is very hard and to be honest I think the Bruins will regret this decision in a lot of ways. Bergeron is extremely talented and a hardworker but he doesn't strike me as someone who would tell his own teammate to shut up and take a seat.

I'd rather dress a player that has the highest TKO's per game ratio. ;)

Changed what dynamic against Vancouver?

Drop the can part. He's old. There's a reason the Bruins are dropping him. I'd love to get a 25 year old, or even a 30 year old, Thornton type player. Go find one who's available.

Luke Gazdic, Patrick Bordelaus, Ryan Reeves...

Also if pests don't want to fight and the enforcer has no chance to fight them, go after their young player or star player and see how they like it. Anyway I'm more than sure that Thornton will find a home and might be back with the Bruins in some sort of once his career is over.

There's a reason the red wings don't play that style, and im kind of glad they don't.

Theres Nothing manly about running at a smaller guy who has nothing to do with your problem.

The Kings have drafted a few guys like that.

I'd love for the Wings to have drafted someone like Jordan Nolan. 6'3" 221 lbs. 24 yrs old. Will hit, isn't a afraid to scrap with anyone. Can chip in a few goals. picked 7th round 186 overall.

Or Dwight King. 6'4" 230 lbs. 24 yrs old. HIts, will fight, can play hockey and go to the hard areas of the ice. 4th round, 109th overall.

Over the years it's been great for the Wings that they didn't have an anti-Euro bias in drafting guys. I swear though it seems like sometimes they're biased against drafting big physical kids in the late rounds. Like they'd rather keep their fingers crossed on a small skill player in hopes they'll land another Zetterberg.

I would loveeee to have Dwight king.

But I see him as more of a skilled player, hes got some good hands.

Skill player might be overstating it. :P

But yeah, he's not really a goon (though he looks like one). He's a big guy who will hit and scrap, but does have some pretty good hands.

Ha.im Definitely being generous.

But I really like him.

And he'd fit right in with the caveman looks of sheahan and lashoff.

Yeah and it's not like King is a bad player, the guy can play for sure and their fourth line is feared around the NHL. The problem with drafting so many small guys in all the later rounds is that the Wings might still think, they are ahead of the curve when it comes to Euros which simple isn't true, other teams are sending their scouts to Sweden, Swiss, Finland and the other top leagues too so it's much harder to find a gems. Would be a good time to change the approach and start drafting big, physical kids.

Agreed.

He's realistically probably a really good 3rd liner, but he has played all over the Kings lineup, including 1st line with Kopitar.

Nolan is more like a Thornton. Though he's bigger and only 24, so his game still might develop some.

Kopitar is another guy who has great size, he doesn't fight but he for sure knows how to use his body. I remember the time he got drafted I told a buddy of mine whichever team is going to draft this kid has a potential star right there, he laughed it off well now everyone can see what this guy can do.

Overall the Kings lineup is just filled with guys that have size and can obviously play really well. They have the makings of becoming a dynasty.

For the most part they have.

It used to be six small skilled euros, and two or three flyers on big guys.

But now its more the other way around.

It just takes time to get them in the system, were seeing that now with sheahan, jurco, and hopefully this season with mantha.
