This is perfect IMO. When his inevitable injuries occur Mrazek will get the call and get some more nhl experience, but will still get a lot more time playing with the Griffins. Win win. I would've been a little bummed if it was anything more than 1 year but I think this is ideal.

The hype for Mrazek is funny the guy hasn't done anything worthwhile at the NHL level and yet people are already making him the next starter. Reminds a lot on a certain guy named Jacob Markström.

What exactly has Howard proven then? Since he became our starter, he has failed to get us past the 2nd round. Mrazek has unreal numbers for a rookie goalie, and has looked very confident in the games I have seen him play. He has had a ton of AHL experience to add to that. What I like most about him is that he does not give up on plays, much like Dom Hasek. Is he better then Howard? Not yet. But it looks like he has a good shot at taking the #1 spot within the next couple seasons.

pretty cheap cap hit: check

one year contract: check

solid enough history between the pipes to show he can stop the puck when needed: check

significant history of injury, so Mrazek gets plenty of time to play in the NHL: check

I can dig it, although I gotta say after watching Gus play with us and seeing how often he loses sight of the puck, or how frequently it slips behind him, or how regularly he is caught out of position, I'm still baffled to this day how he puts up the numbers he has.

I'm sure our front-office has told Howard what they expect from him going forward and that is simple: consistency and be better

that's exactly why I'm so happy with the Monster coming back, he has experience and has kept this team in a lot of games, they had no business to be in. Like I said with Mrazek I'll wait and see. Hasek to me was just unreal the style he plays will never be seen again, those were the days...:(

almost seems like forever we've been talking about double digit winning streaks and rolling over 80 % off the league by only giving 80 % if even that..

More evidence that Holland should have waited till July 1st:

With Gustavsson re-signed, there remains 13 goalies heading for UFA status that appeared in 20 or more games this past season (Not counting Giguere since he is retiring).

If you throw Gustavsson into the mix, he ranks 7th out of the 14 in GAA, and 9th in SV%

Of note, three goalies that would have likely came cheaper than $1.5M for one year did BETTER than Gustavsson in both categories. Thomas Greiss (2nd GAA, 3rd SV%), Al Montoya (3rd GAA, 4th SV%), and Justin Peters (5th GAA, 5th SV%). Curtis McElhinney also edged out Gus at 8th in SV%, but took 8th in GAA. Those three goalies all played for teams that didn't make the playoffs.

I hope Gus buys Holland and his agent a nice steak dinner. In my opinion, he would not have found a better deal than what he got here on the open market. He would've been competing for a job with the better and more durable options I mentioned and also against more experienced options that had worse numbers like Bryzgalov, Thomas, Nabokov and Emery. You could even throw Vokoun and Dubnyk in the mix...

To me, the eye roll this caused me today ranks up there with when I read Holland is in talks with Cleary.... Bad move.

Don't like it at all. Mrazek doesn't need another year in Grand Rapids with nothing to prove. Monster is too much of a risk as a backup and quite frankly, he wasn't good the second half of the season either.

Oh you mean when the entire team was out and Anderson was our #1 center?

Blaming the team and injuries for Gustavsson's crappy late season play is moot. As I've pointed out, other backup goalies put up way better numbers playing infront of teams that were bad all season.

In fact, here are Gustavssons numbers from January first till the end of the regular season.

10GP

5-2-2

3.04GAA

.896SV%

Also of note: He allowed four or more goals in five of those ten games.

Pretty not so good.

For comparison, here are the numbers that got Joey McDonald demoted to the AHL this season:

7GP

3-3-1

3.16GAA

.885SV%

Not very far off....

Probably played somewhat of a role. So does that mean his first half numbers were also directly related to the team in front of him too? If Monster had shown more consistency throughout his career, I would be more inclined to believe your argument. He just hasn't been very good outside some brief stretches, when he is even healthy enough to play. Besides, Andersson was the #1 center for all of about three games before Legwand was acquired. The odds of getting a better back-up willing to take a 1 year deal at all are pretty slim. So even though I agree he wouldn't have done any better in Free Agency, I don't think the Wings could have done better on a 1 year back-up.

Gustavsson isn't anything special but he's more than good enough to play 20 games next year which is really all we need him for. Howard returning to form is far more important than any of the potential options as the #2 guy.

Kind of silly to be upset over this. It's a backup role. So what if there were a small handful of slightly better goalies? They aren't THAT much better, and Gus is a known quantity with an establishes relationship with the team. It's really a non-issue. I would've liked to have had Mrazek as the backup but its pretty hard to get upset over Gus coming back.

:puke: well, so much for pushing jimmy to be better...get ready for another season of below average jimmy and tons of shootout losses, because neither monster nor jimmy are any good in the shootout. And they are both average to below in general. Typical Holland. Expect a Cleary signing before the draft. Holland is horrendous and needs to be fired. Damn him! Guess he better make that D better because these two guys can't stop s***. Holland has fallen off his wagon. He is by far in the worst 5 GM'S in the league.

There are 29 other teams that would take him in an instant.

It's easier to make the argument that he's the greatest GM in the history of the sport than it is to argue he's in the bottom 5 in the league.

Good move, good price. The guy was a solid backup for us last year even in spite of his injuries. He got a lot of wins and stepped in under a ton of pressure in the playoffs and played well there too. Gives the Wings a year to see how Howard is going to bounce back from his worst season before assessing what to do with Mrazek. If Howard comes back and plays well next year, there's no reason he wouldn't play a lot of games as usual, and it doesn't make sense to have Mrazek on the bench for that given Howard's usually high workload. He'll get more games in GR next year and if Howard struggles, the next year it's easier to sell more of a split time which is better for Mrazek.

I'm no fan of Holland these days, but this is one of those deals that just makes sense when you really step away. It's not a blockbuster but it's hardly an obvious mistake. It's a solid, sensible choice, and the rather obvious one all things considered. This is a backup role, and Gus ultimately did pretty well in the role last year and again, he did his part in the playoffs as best as could be reasonably expected under very difficult circumstances and a lousy defense. He's not the greatest backup ever, but at the price and given what he did last year, there's just no real compelling reason to rock the boat. There are far more important areas to be focusing on then finding a new backup goalie.

If he actually signs Dan Cleary to an NHL deal though, I really will question the sanity of anyone still trying to defend his effectiveness as the GM for the Wings. He may have great skill and knowledge to do the job well, but I think he's lost the edge he needs to do it right in Detroit. He just seems too sentimental here. A change of scenery (or simply a new role in the organization) could be good for him and a fresh perspective at GM with less fond memories for washed up players could be good for the Wings.
