Detroit re-signs Gustavsson 1 yr $1.85 mill

:puke: well, so much for pushing jimmy to be better...get ready for another season of below average jimmy and tons of shootout losses, because neither monster nor jimmy are any good in the shootout. And they are both average to below in general. Typical Holland. Expect a Cleary signing before the draft. Holland is horrendous and needs to be fired. Damn him! Guess he better make that D better because these two guys can't stop s***. Holland has fallen off his wagon. He is by far in the worst 5 GM'S in the league.

Didn't I already disprove your shootout comment? Gustavsson mostly played well in the shootouts last year.

I'm no fan of Holland these days, but this is one of those deals that just makes sense when you really step away. It's not a blockbuster but it's hardly an obvious mistake. It's a solid, sensible choice, and the rather obvious one all things considered. This is a backup role, and Gus ultimately did pretty well in the role last year and again, he did his part in the playoffs as best as could be reasonably expected under very difficult circumstances and a lousy defense. He's not the greatest backup ever, but at the price and given what he did last year, there's just no real compelling reason to rock the boat. There are far more important areas to be focusing on then finding a new backup goalie.

If he actually signs Dan Cleary to an NHL deal though, I really will question the sanity of anyone still trying to defend his effectiveness as the GM for the Wings. He may have great skill and knowledge to do the job well, but I think he's lost the edge he needs to do it right in Detroit. He just seems too sentimental here. A change of scenery (or simply a new role in the organization) could be good for him and a fresh perspective at GM with less fond memories for washed up players could be good for the Wings.

I think this is a something that happens to every GM no matter how good the guy is. At some point all of them seem to become sentimentally attached to their players and keep them longer as they should. That being said, I highly doubt Holland re-signs Cleary to a 1 way contract if so, yes, then I would be a different GM too. i.e. throw a boat load of money at Chiarelli or Lombardi.

Like others have said, there is really nothing wrong with re-signing the monster to such a great contract the guy did well under difficult circumstances and even did a good job against the Bruins. He knows the organisation, the organisation knows him and this is big change to play himself into a bigger and longer contract next year.

Also, yeah he had a few bad games, when the team was playing terribly, but for one month or so, he was playing as well as any net minder in the league and he made a couple of the best saves I've seen in a long time. He also did well against Boston in my opinion.

He's bound to be inconsistant at times, if he wasn't, he wouldn't be signing as a back up and he wouldn't be $1.5 mill per year.

Guess it is a good viable option to bridge the 1 year before Petr comes up full time; but I do wonder if we could of snagged someone else on the open market? Too late for that now

Welcome back Gustavsson

There are certainly worse options for a backup. No problem with Gus for another year.

There are a lot of guys who have done well over such a small period of time but I think you really need to see a bigger picture like 30 games for two seasons to really get a better evaluation

dark, read before you post. Howard had a better save % and GAA than Gus in the PO's. Howard finished 3rd among all G's in the playoffs with a .931 save %. Only mason and jones were better. In GAA Howard finished 4th behind jones, mason and rask. Howard was not nor is he our problem. His health first half of the year was an issue.

Howard is definitely a huge part of our problem, he gave up early cheap goals in every single game that we lost.

I would to with all the crap playing in front of him.

Great signing. Mrazek will get 60+ games for the Griffins next year. Its is last year of AHL eligibility so I am glad to see him in Grand Rapids for his final year. I would rather see him play 60 games in the AHL as opposed to 20 in the NHL as a backup. After next year, Mrazek will be with Detroit and competing for Howards job.

Exactly, and I think it works better this way. It gives Jimmy one more year to prove he's worth the big contract he signed, right before Mrazek gets hot on his tail. And if he falters, then it's game on. Does anyone think that Howie's contract would be moveable if Mrazek proved he was better?

Good on Gus for re-signing though, better the devil you know….

What?

Yes, kinda. After this (14/15) season he would have to pass through waivers to go down to GR. part of the new CBA. Only 3 years of protection now.

First you are assuming that Mrasek beats him out anytime soon. Then there is Howard's NTC and how much value would a player have that gets beat out? Not much. Best beat, Howard returns to his top 5-10 in the NHL form and we are all set for 4 more years.

While I am assuming, I just have this gut feeling that Mrazek will be great. Howie is good, don't get me wrong, but it feels like he's just not as self confident as Petr. Didn't know about the NTC until you mentioned it, but apparently it's only a 10 team list. Still moveable, but yes would be difficult. The last thing we want though is to end up with a Luongo/Schneider situation. But if massive contracts that are bigger than Howard's can be moved, it's definitely possible.

Actually since mraz won't be making big money for several years yet we would easily be able to afford both of them. And once Howard's contract is up he can ten sign elsewhere or be a back up here for less money....assuming of course petr lives up to his hype.

Howard has proven he is a great goalie mraz hasn't.

But it can be potentially a great 1-2 punch for 3 years. Howard has three years left after this reason right?

Howie's got 4 years left after this coming season (signed until 18-19), but I don't know. If Mrazek is as good as he could be, do you think that the Wings will be happy to have a $5 million backup goalie?

Well 14-15 season Mrazek is in Grand Rapids, and there's no way he steals number 1 from Jimmy in his first year up (15-16). I can see him taking the top spot in 16-17, though, if he's as good as we are hoping and Jimmy doesn't rebound from this average year he had. But even if Mrazek was number 1 then, there would only be three years, including that season left on Howard's contract, and at the very least Howard should still be good enough to keep the job competitive and provide leadership for Mrazek. I think Howard will be around for the duration of his contract, and Mrazek should have room to be here too, if he can prove he's as good as he thinks. I used to think it wasn't possible, but now that I have it all laid out in front of me, I think it's a pretty good situation for the Wings to be in.

I think then, the key is really how long and how much Mrazek signs for after this season (as he's an RFA). If he signed say, for 2 or 3 seasons at a cap friendly 1.5-2 million, then we could have quite the goalie battle down the road in a few years time.

This is all dependent on how good Mrazek turns out to be, but judging by his performance so far, it should be a dandy to watch this situation play out.
