2014 Offseason League Signings and Trades

Dallas is making moves, trying to improve, and players aren't refusing to sign there.

Tampa Bay is making moves, trying to improve, and players aren't refusing to sign there.

Am I sensing a theme?

People who know history know that Holland didn't build those late 90's Cup teams. He spent to maintain them (02) after they had been built by Bowman and his predecessors. Furthermore, Holland was lucky in 08 and 09. (See Joe Dumars for reference). Having the best defenseman in a generation (along with prime Dats and Z) can do that to an organization. He didn't build the Wings championships and he sure as hell can't build them now.

People shouldn't be complaining about getting fleeced in the Legwand deal. The team got fleeced in losing Yzerman and Nill.

...not unless there is a trade to be had, but hell, even Buffalo and Florida are getting better...

Kenny, nobody cares that its Detroit, Original 6, Storied Franchise, Rich History...they aren't going to come here for less money and they aren't going to come here to lose. You failed this team over and over and over again. You failed these fans...you haven't won crap without a Scotty Bowman influenced team...Even Lidstrom recognized this and left us...

Holland needs to step up NOW and tell Niskanen...$8M, 7 years...let's do this! And show the entire NHL that he is serious about making this city THE only logical choice for UFA's... I feel so bad for Datsyuk....Zetterberg should ask for a trade. He will rot here for the rest of his contract if he doesn't get out now...

Red Wings appear to be working the trade phones now to bolster their blueline. Lost out on Boyle, and apparently out on Niskanen.

We're going to bleed for this. Watch. KH didn't want to overpay in the past? Just wait and see what the going rate is for a top four defenseman now that every other one is off the market.

Yay! Why get guys for free when we can give up talent and depth for them!

Did Dallas or TBL sign anyone the Wings, or you, wanted to sign? Making a move just to make a move isn't what the Wings need IMO.

A tad extreme of a theory, but I will say that Holland is dealing with a generation of players that weren't in the league when the Wings were most dominant, and he likely does have a reputation for being cheap. Younger players with less admiration for a Wings team that has been slipping for awhile now very well might be less willing to work with Holland. Nothing about Holland seems flexible these days. Yzerman and Nill are new and they're taking chances and they're clearly not sticklers on the financials like Holland. While there may be more truth to some of the other stuff, we'll never really know, and you don't have to overanalyze his past success to see how Holland might have just grown stale as the GM of this team in this era.

This. Jim Nill and Steve Yzerman are showing everyone how its done. These teams are showing strides towards improvement. If you sit there and "stand pat" year after year while the team falls farther down the standings, what motivation would anyone have to go to Detroit? Why would anyone take less to play in Detroit? Why would anyone pick Detroit at this moment? We don't have the "shot at a Cup" shine anymore. Not when you're barely qualifying for the playoffs and haven't gone beyond the 2nd round since 2009. At this rate, its only a matter of time before Holland starts looking at his options of trading Datsyuk and Zetterberg for prospects. If you're not trying to win now, then why keep them around?

And that would be a horrible mistake. In 4 years that will be a horrible deal IMO. Standing pat in a weak free agent market may actually turn out to be a very smart move for KH

You're assuming Kenny would actually pull the trigger on a trade of any kind.
