Big risk to take for a guy who's never produced any better than Matt Niskanen, plays half the defense, costs 5.5 million a year, and would require a significant package to acquire (per reports).

Why not just spend a little more (maybe) on the guy who does everything better and keep all your trade assets?

A lot of the things being said about Myers were also said about Zdeno Chara 3 years into his career.

He was a freakishly tall guy who needed to fill out to match his height. He had a pretty good rookie season then struggled mightily for the next couple of years before falling out of favor with the Islanders.

It was once he got traded to a good team in Ottawa that he finally filled out and started to become the defenceman he is today.

Now Myers is highly unlikely to follow that same path, and doesn't really play the same style of game as Chara but you can't teach 6'8. If he fills out and develops his defensive game, that combined with his height, reach and skating ability will make him a Norris Trophy candidate.

If we can get him its worth moving out one of the gluttony of left handed defenceman we have and possibly a forward and pick.

He's only 24 years old, honestly I like the idea of getting him over Edler, OEL, Boyle, or anyone else we've been linked to for the past few seasons.

Boston too. They have 1.67 million left in space with Krug, Reilly Smith, Iginla, and a bunch of others left to sign.

Pens to. They have a bit of space, but a LOT of roster spots to fill. I said it earlier. The top teams in the east are gonna have to get rid of guys. Wings have an opportunity here to become a contender in the East.

I wouldn't get carried away yet. The cap is only about a mill or two under what was projected and it will go up every season so it's not like there is going to be a mass sale of all kinds of top players.

I don't mean teams will be having fire Sales, I just mean that the top teams in the east will be losing a player or two, and the Wings have the space to add. Top teams will regress, Wings will improve.

Dorsett could've been had for a pick. Wtf.

Not just any pick. A third round pick. That’s some good GMing by Benning.

Basically, today he got Bonino, Sbisa, a 24th overall pick, a 50th overall pick, and Dorsett by giving up Kesler, Garrison, and a third rounder.

Vancouver will be harder to play against next year. The days of the soft Canucks may have come to an end.

Yup. Good day for Benning and the Canucks.

I hear Simmonds may be available. If that's true, Ken needs to be making calls.

Every year people gleefully predict cap hell for a number of teams, yet it never materializes. It's almost like (most) GM's know what they're doing.

Its a little different this year when the cap ended up being more than 5 million dollars less than what was expected last off-season.

Chicago is already over the cap and Free Agency hasn't hit, Boston has less than 2 million to sign a bunch of guys.

All these teams will be able to get under the cap again but there are going to be some good players available to teams that have cap space.
