When you have Kassian Sestito Dorsett you are a damn hard team to play against. Rangers have McIlrath to replace him

McIlrath is a defenseman. Plus, I'm not sure it is guaranteed that he makes the team next year.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 6m

EDM's trade of Sam Gagner to TB for Ted Purcell doesn't necessarily mean Gagner will stay in TB. Buyout a possibility but so is a trade.

Hearing PHX, which recently bought out centre Mike Ribeiro, is a possible landing spot for Gagner. Stay tuned.

6th rounder in 2015 for Gagner and Crombeen https://twitter.com/...439867590758400

Gotta think Stevie could have done better for Purcell and Crombeen.

Wonder what Stevie is freeing up room for. First Malone, now Purcell. Also, a 6th for Gagner and Crombeen?? The salary cap is making the NHL a strange place.

and basically gave away assets to do it. It's a strategic move, but certainly not "unbelievable" lol

Tampa sends Nate Thompson to Anaheim for 4th and 7th in 2015. Busy day for Steve Yzerman!

I wonder what he's going to do.

Personally I find it far more impressive to not have to sell off guys at bargain prices, that you signed in the first place just to free up cash to do it all over again with different guys.

Probably making a push for Boyle and Iginla.

Forgive my ignorance since I don't know much about the Bolts blueline, but wouldn't Yzerman try to sign Niskanen?

EDIT - unless of course it's already known among GM's that 1 team has the 'inside edge', and more or less has a verbal agreement with Niskanen's agent - then I could see Stevie Y shopping for someone else.

EDM's trade of Sam Gagner to TB for Ted Purcell doesn't necessarily mean Gagner will stay in TB. Buyout a possibility but so is a trade.

So why not buy out Purcell straight away instead of trading for Gagner? Tampa wasn't going to keep Gagner and even after trading him have to retain third of his salary. It seems that Yzerman took a complicated route just to get rid of Purcell. Purcell cap hit was lower than Gagner's so buying Purcell out would've saved them money.

Cap hit aside, If they bought out Purcell the owner would still have to pay him. Now that's Edmontons problem.

Sure, but TSN tells that when Tampa traded Purcell for Gagner they didn't know yet that Coyotes were going to get Gagner off their hands. So instead of Purcell their owned would've had to pay for Gagner. The timing of these trades was right after the announcement of the new salary cap (which was lower than what was expected) so you'd think that cap hits are the reason behind these moves and not the actual salaries.
