From Fox Sports Detroit. http://msn.foxsports.com/detroit/story/source-wings-will-go-all-in-for-matt-niskanen-070114 Wow, from Art Regner and posted at 12:23 AM EST.... That is very interesting. I wonder if the term with Ehroff is making them realize they need to push hard for Niskanen because they really want to upgrade the D and don't want to lose out. I was hoping this would be the case as it seems the problem with the Wings the past few seasons and not getting certain guys was their lack of wanting to compete to get a guy. Unfortunately, the NHL right now is a land of financial competition and if you aren't going to pay a little more for a guy, he'll go to another competitor. I feel like current players on the team would understand it's the market and it's a business.

The most interesting thing in the article to me is that the source says the Wings believe they are TWO defensemen away from being an exceptional team. So it's not sounding so crazy that we could land BOTH Niskanen and Boyle.

Yeah, I don't mind Boyle as much as others, but I think I might like the idea of Niskanen and Stralman better... but that would end up screwing our youth just a tad unless we move someone in the near future... I prefer Boyle and Niskanen for that reason. Boyle can be gone in two years and make room for whoever excels most out of our defensive prospects. I know a lot of people on here think all of them are going to turn into NHL defensemen but the reality is we will be lucky to get one great one out of the bunch. That gives us Niskanen at least long term. 5 krsmith17, Nev, sjr2012 and 2 others reacted to this

Marchenko seems like he could be a solid defensive defensemen. Sounds like Backman is another DeKeyser with slightly better offensive ability. In the end though, from what I read on redwingscentral.com is that Sproul is the real deal and will really excel at the NHL level. Can't wait!
jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) I want a guy who's intelligent. That would be stupidity to get free agency at 27 and sign a short term deal. It's not like he's a bum who came out of no where. He's had a few solid seasons and put together a great year. Not unheard of for a guy who's 27. Defenseman usually take longer to mature.if he signs a short term deal and continues to improve, top 4 money suddenly turns into #1/#2 money... And if he falls off a bit, they'll still be a lot of teams that will push hard for him just because he has the ability.(he needs a change of scenery, he didn't fit the scheme etc) And he'd still be under 30, Like i said I KNOW it won't happen. Had I said, "I DOUBT it will happen." it would've implied that I thought there was a chance. It was more of a, "hey, I'd respect the hell out of a kid who did this even though I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND that it never will happen." Kind of Like I said to begin with, ya know? That's the nature of how message boards work. you don't want it discussed, why post it?Well sir, I guess I have a few points. One being that just because you wouldn't do it, doesn't mean its "stupidity." The point behind what I was saying to begin with is with all these reports "were willing to overpay for him, and he's definitely getting seven years," etc. I would have liked for him to show some form of confidence in who he is as a player before I, personally, would feel more favorably with a commitment that long. And by all means, discuss, that I have no quarrels with. I was just trying to point out that we didn't actually disagree,. I said an entirely impossible scenario that would make me feel better in regards to signing an (almost?former) penguin, and you effectively just called it stupid. Which. I'll give you is argumentative, but not really disagreeing. Unless youre saying it wouldnt make you like the kid more if he signed a shorter term deal with the wings. arag 308 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Boyle goes to Tampa. Niskanen to Detroit. That is what is going to happen. It is going to be awesome.
TheXym 2,606 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 I'm certain he would - however what makes Detroit a better option than others? Honestly - I have no clue as to the other teams that are making a bid for Niskanen. His personality seems to be more of the play second pairing, QB the PP rather than be the #1 all the time. Kronner and Smith together last year worked well, IMHO. Pair Niskanen with Danny DeKeyser and have him run the PP with Kronwall and I think it's a situation that fits his mind and skillsets. Ericsson with Marchenko or Sproul or Oulette for the third pair, Lashoff as a cheap 7th. 1 BadgerBob reacted to this

TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Not sure if this is official yet, but twitter is saying Niskanen signed a 7 year 40M deal with the Caps. And I for one say good riddance. That's wayyyy too much of an overpayment for a guy with one big season under his belt.
kipwinger 8,457 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) What happened to Niskanen's going to make "Eleventy Billion dollars and get paid like a first pair defenseman"? Some predicted upward of 7 million. Anybody wanna raise their hand and call a mulligan on that one? KH: "Hey Matt, you should sign with us". MN: "Why would I do that? You're a worse team than the one I'm leaving and you've done nothing to improve." KH: "Oh by the way, we're going to need you to sign for less than you'd make elsewhere". MN: Lol. Holy s***. I just realized I can see the future lol. Although, to be accurate it wasn't just Niskanen turning down because our GM is cheap and complacent. I also thought Ehrhoff would take more. I also thought we'd land Boyle. I do think if Ehrhoff and Boyle hadn't taken less to play where they wanted, Niskanen would have gotten more. But I was wrong. Everyone was saying no more than $5 Btw it was stated Holland was willing to give 7 years 42 million but they wouldn't give him the chance. The exact offer my "so called source" told me. Actually I was wrong. The original report I saw said he signed a 7 year 42.5 million contract. But it was actually 40.25 do a little less than 6 per. But I was close.
