Sorry for slightly OT but Postal 2 has been one of the best games ever made.

If he goes there their defense will be damn scary.

I know they are going hard after Vanek too. Not sure if they have the Cap for both or not. Niskanen is a Minnesota native which scares me. Apparently they are meeting with him tomorrow because Niskanen is getting married today. Edited by Datsyukian-Deke

Overpay and get him.

The cap era has screwed over the players in every way except during unrestricted free agency. We're not going to fill the gap on defense by any other means so let's pony up.

In reality there is no such a thing as the Right D man for the Right price. No need to say that regardless of the position played, every UFA is being overpaid. Overpaying for the premiere D man is perfectly fine. And one more thing. Don't we, the loyal fans pay for some, if not the most of their salaries ? We want some results. I think we all have been patient enough waiting for our team to get what it needs to be competitive and be an elite team. I think we deserve that. Go Wings and get this guy already.

Just our luck he's from Minnesota and he'll probably go there. I honestly look at it through my eyes and if I was a player and had a chance to play for my hometown I would do it in a heartbeat. Especially a place like Minnesota where they're hockey crazy and they're starting to come together as a contender. I guess if we lose out on Niskanen we shouldn't go after Minnesota born players anymore. :sleepy:

I understand the concern to a point, but Niskanen wasn't a Cheechoo. He was a very good defenseman for years, who has been improving each year, and had a breakout season. It's not like he came out of nowhere. He is the age where defensemen usually break out. If there was any player and age to take a risk, it's Niskanen. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

I think if anything he was just put in a position to excel. Bylsma seemed to understand his strengths and limitations and play him accordingly. Put him on your second pairing, give the toughest assignments to your first pairing, and let him run the first unit PP.

I fear we end up overpaying Sami Salo.

That's exactly how we would use him, too, so...

Nobody seemed to mind the hometown advantage when we got DeKeyser ;) Obviously the Wings will have to overpay. If Holland makes a solid offer and he still picks Minnesota or another team, not much you can do. Location, location, location. I don't think Minnesota is really considered a contender just yet. They are a playoff team, but that's about it.

I agree...as much as I bash on Holland, as long as he is making competitive offers, I guess I am ok with it. I can blame Holland though for slowly turning this into a destination that top UFA's avoid...then again, I also blame the city leaders for the cesspool...hell, even I left the area after 42 years of watching it get worse and worse...

I think the Wings could afford to do the same with Niskanen too, even though he is going to get paid like a first pairing d-man. DeKeyser seems like an ideal complement to Niskanen as a defense partner and that would really solidify the Wings top four on defense, assuming Babs still intends on utilizing Kronner and E as the shutdown pair. Then Kronner/Niskanen on the points of the first PP unit.

I honestly wasn't a huge fan of signing Niskanen going into free agency, but I'm pretty much aboard now and have come to grips it's probably going to fall in the necessary overpayment category should it occur. I want to win now because Pavel and Z are still here, yet also continue the transition into building for the future as well. Niskanen gives the Wings the opportunity to accomplish both of those goals.

I've heard from a non quotable source, which is (very) close to Holland, apparently niskanen really wants to come here and we are very high on his list.

Also we won't get yandle, price is all of nyquist, Tatar, jurco and mantha + first.

Holland is probably going to give him 7 years $42 million. Just a heads up.

Niskanen that is

If this comes true it would be a very pleasant surprise.

Yep, he is apparently aggressively trying for 2 puck moving dmen (Myers or Boyle being the second), and a top six forward which he's currently really trying for iginla.
