Wings to have face to face with Matt Niskanen

I'd imagine the plan if they got both, would be to package Kindl+Andersson for picks. Dump enough salary to sign the RFA's and still be comfortably under for Iggy/Alfie.

I think its' Boyle over Ehrhoff to serve as the stop gap until the kids can come through?

I have a feeling that Niskanen will simply end up being too expensive for Holland's liking, at this point I really doubt we sign him.

Boyle and Ehrhoff would be great though.

Feelingwise I think Niskanen is Minnesotta bound and why not he could play with an elite shutdown player in Ryan Suter there, play infront of his loved ones and make out like a bandit.

Ehrhoff would be great and Boyle at his age is not a longterm solution so why even bother ?

Niskanen to cut his list to four teams tonight and Lightning and Capitals believed to be two of them. Not looking good for us cuz my guess is one is Minnesota and that leaves one team left. I'm guessing we are out of the running.

Where did you hear that?

Everything I've read states it's all just speculation.

I have completely soured on Niskanen. He does not deserve anything close to the term and hit he's probably going to get. He's second pairing. Rather have Boyle on a short deal or let the kids play.

I really hope he signs with us, but for one-two years to show he deserves the big money.

I know it won't happen, but I'd respect him more if hewas willing to bet on himself.

I think he is a good defenseman and will be a "good" defenseman but he isn't a "great" defenseman so he is going to cash in for as long as he can because he knows that. He isn't going to be the top defenseman for any team he plays for unless their defense is garbage. But he is going to get paid top defenseman money. Edited by Datsyukian-Deke

I want a guy who's intelligent. That would be stupidity to get free agency at 27 and sign a short term deal. It's not like he's a bum who came out of no where. He's had a few solid seasons and put together a great year. Not unheard of for a guy who's 27. Defenseman usually take longer to mature.

The Red Wings have been told they're on the short lists for both Matt Niskanen and Dan Boyle, the top right-handed shooting defensemen available. They're no longer in the running for the left-handed shooting Christian Ehrhoff, who is seeking a five-year deal, two more years than the Red Wings are willing to give.

I wonder if it's possible they each are told the other has interest in playing with the Wings would make them want to come here. You know, more talent give them a better chance at winning the cup. Doubtful, but just a thought. Really hoping for Niskanen first and foremost though.

Don't like the looks of this tbh. We're going to overpay for Boyle and that's it. Holland has been aggressively searching for a top 4 defensemen for 4 years and plenty have gotten passed around with lots of success. This makes no sense to me

The Wings won't give Ehrhoff more than three years, but are willing to give Boyle two and Nisakenen seven? Yeah, let's get out of the running for the best player of the three just because he isn't a righty.

I know right?! Makes me think Boyle is the guy because they don't want to get caught in a long term contract.

I think that's exactly what's happening. They're signing more stop gaps until the the kids are ready. It's been the plan for the last 3 years. They don't want to pay inflated market value for others team youth when they know we have a crap ton of our own on the way.

EDIT: Plus we're going to be end up against this the cap this year after signings and it will only get worse next year and so on. They don't want to commit to an inflated long term deal that will bar us from signing our prospects in the future

Scott Burnside from ESPN has his predictions on where people will end up and has Boyle going to the Wings, Niskanen to the Caps, Ehrhoff to Tampa, and Stralman to either the Wings or Tampa.

I'd be ok with Boyle if we get Stralman. Stralman is a defensive defenseman and makes us stronger on the back end why Boyle can help on the powerplay for two years until Sproul gets ready.

I know people hate Boyle because he's older, but if we can get him and a younger guy like the scenario listed here... you gotta be okay with that, as pointed out already. We should be getting more offense out of Smith, too. So you have Kronwall, Smith, and Boyle who are more offensive, and then Ericsson, DeKeyser, and Stralman who are more defensively sound. I know, Kronwall is pretty well balanced.

Then you can filter in Sproul as Boyle departs...

I guess it's noteworthy that he had no forwards going to the Wings. He predicts Vanek to Minny and Iggy to Montreal.

Yeah well from what Holland is saying, it sounds like they'll stick with what they have an hope that the youngsters will grow more this year and put up more points. I would love it if Mantha can come in and be rookie of the year... pipe dream probably.

I agree. Although a top forward certainly helps, I don't think offense would be this teams problem as they currently stand; granted our top forwards stay healthy.

Yeah I completely agree with you. I'd love to see them get Iginla or Vrbata (a couple of guys who are proven and wouldn't cost as much as some of the others out there). I hope they can stay relatively more healthy this year, and adding a solid d-man will certainly help as they'll control the play better and not have our guys running around quite as much. Please let this not be a big fat disappointment.
