Gilbert is still out there.  Look for Holland to sign him, trade Kindl, and promote a kid.

Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, well, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle... Ogie Ogilthorpe!

Not sure if this is official yet, but twitter is saying Niskanen signed a 7 year 40M deal with the Caps. And I for one say good riddance. That's wayyyy too much of an overpayment for a guy with one big season under his belt.

I get the feeling Gilbert won't get the same treatment in Hab town as Gorges did...There's a reason why Gilbert has bounced around the league.

What happened to Niskanen's going to make "Eleventy Billion dollars and get paid like a first pair defenseman"?  Some predicted upward of 7 million.  Anybody wanna raise their hand and call a mulligan on that one?

KH:  "Hey Matt, you should sign with us".

MN:  "Why would I do that?  You're a worse team than the one I'm leaving and you've done nothing to improve."

KH:  "Oh by the way, we're going to need you to sign for less than you'd make elsewhere".

MN:  Lol.

Holy s***.  I just realized I can see the future lol.  Although, to be accurate it wasn't just Niskanen turning down because our GM is cheap and complacent.

GMRwings:  "Well, in other civilized countries, 16 years old isn't considered underage.  For instance, I believe the age of consent is 16 in Canada.  There's some US states where it's 16 as well.

Get off the high horse.  Not like she was 10."

I will. I thought he'd get more. Like 6.5 paid like a number one more. I also thought Ehrhoff would take more. I also thought we'd land Boyle. I do think if Ehrhoff and Boyle hadn't taken less to play where they wanted, Niskanen would have gotten more. But I was wrong.

I said between $6-7 and I was right. Everyone was saying no more than $5

Btw it was stated Holland was willing to give 7 years 42 million but they wouldn't give him the chance. The exact offer my "so called source" told me.
Actually I was wrong. The original report I saw said he signed a 7 year 42.5 million contract. But it was actually 40.25 do a little less than 6 per. But I was close.

Soooo, what you're saying is that Matt Niskanen didn't sign for 6 million dollars or more lol?

That's exactly what I said. I was close but wrong. Although Holland was willing to pay him $6m but he wasn't interested.

Supposedly.  Given how wrong each and every reporter was about each and every free agent I'm going to take reports about offers that were never made with a grain of salt.  Keep in mind these are the same reporters that went on and on about the Wings being "in on" Boyle, Niskanen, Ehrhoff, etc.  when not only were we not "in on" them, they were actively avoiding us.

But I don't want to single you out.  Lots of people who get paid to report on hockey were saying Niskanen would make over 6 million too.  Granted, these are the same people who said Christian Ehrhoff wanted 5 years, Dan Boyle wanted 5.5 million, and Thomas Vanek would easily make 7 million dollars a year.

Niskanen is still overpaid regardless, especially for the term.

According to reporters the Wings are always in on someone, their offer is always "competitive" (although no details are shared), so like you I take it with a grain of salt.

As for Vanek I firmly believe the guy played himself out of a bigger and better contract with his playoff performance and the olympics.

btw. Niskanen at 5,75 will turn out to be a bargain very soon, the cap keeps rising and the guy had an unreal season.

Details were shared.  On all deals that the Wings were in on.  They offered Boyle more money and more term than the Rangers.  Just slightly less money, but same term for Niskanen.  Were not given the opportunity to make a pitch to Ehrhoff.  Did not want to give Stralman five years. It was all made pretty clear.

Imma let you finish, and your cap numbers are all good and all that, but imma let Kenny figure it out. Kenny's cap numbers were the best cap numbers this year.

I figured $6 mil per for 7 years for Niskanen. That was pretty close and unless he continues to play like he did last year it's a bad contract. Boyle, Ehrhoff , and Vanek took less to go to teams they wanted to play for.
