UFA day looking up

Obviously father does taxes the body, but do you guys actually think that Zetterberg and Datsyuk are going to play less games than last year? That just seems to fall in the "negative for the sake of being negative" category.

Zetterberg got surgery for his back, said he felt like a new man. Datsyuk is a little less certain, but - come on - they missed half the year. They will be healthier than that.

Better get used to it. Those guys aren't going to get any healthier as their careers go on.

You're speaking as if it's an absolute.... Lidstrom was an iron man until the end, missing very few games - that's just one example that comes to mind. Jagr played 82 games last season.... You're statement while sometimes true, is not always true. You brushed right over my point that Boyle has not played less than 75 games in a season since before 08/09.

Didn't mean to brush over it. I thought I'd already made my point that even if he played 82 games a year for two years, his production is declining, he was never good defensively to begin with, he's small, and he's old. Whether he's in the lineup or not, he doesn't make us noticeably better. If he were so valuable, I'd imagine a Sharks team desperate for post season success would be hanging on to him.

Secondly, neither Lidstrom nor Jagr had the history of nagging injuries that Zetterberg had, and neither of them (at any point in their careers) missed games as frequently as Datsyuk does. It's not hard to imagine those guys staying healthy in old age, they were ALWAYS healthy their entire careers. Datyuk and Zetterberg have never been all that healthy, and certainly aren't going to get more healthy as they get older, slower, and weaker. Nobody should expect them to be. Ideally they'd be passing the torch to a couple of guys who were just entering their primes right about now, not carrying the team on their aging backs.

To be fair, none of our scorers played enough games to get over 50. If you look on their pace, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Alfredsson, Franzen, etc. all would have cleared 50 easy.

Better get used to it. Those guys aren't going to get any healthier as their careers go on.

Actually Z will be healthier than in year this season. And with more talent Datsyuk to share the load Datsyuk hopefully won't be hurt as much.

Chris Nichols ‏@NicholsOnHockey 15s

McKenzie: Ehrhoff probably five-year range, $5 million per. Looking for chance to win. Mentions #NHLDucks, #TBLightning, #Pens, #RedWings

I would take Ehrhoff for those terms in a heartbeat. Not gonna get my hopes up, but seems like the Wings are linked to all of the big names heading into tomorrow.

I think the biggest thing in re: our health is being able to play our possession game. We did a lot of running around this season, having to chase the puck and forecheck a little heavier etc. This is a big reason why we absolutely need to add a reliable puck-mover on our back end. Someone who makes a good first pass and can help clean up our transition game. We need to own the puck, dictate the play.

There's truly no way to know that. Weiss was supposed to be fully recovered from his wrist injury when we signed him, then he gets a hernia. Then it was next week, next month, after the break, then out for the season.

I'm just down with all of the 35 and over signings. If that's all that's available, that's one thing. If there's any hope at all of getting a guy who is 27, I'd be willing to overpay for it. I think you have to take risks sometimes and Niskanen, (if his heart isn't in Minnesota) seems worth taking a chance on. At 32 Ehrhoff is at least sort of on the young side. Sproul and Oulette and Marchenko aren't 24 or 25 year olds. they're still really young guys. I'm okay with bringing in some outside guys and having them be midseason replacements for an injury, which happens every year.

I don't think Ehrhoff would sign for that it may be the starting price but I guess teams have to up it if they really want him. Yeah, being in on some of teh big names is very nice and emotionally touching but getting them is what needs to happen. The chance to get a guy like Niskanen, Ehrhoff won't be coming up too soon again teams are usually locking them up.

Finally we are in a position to take advantage of other teams cap struggles.

Looking at capgeek there are like a million options this years at D.

Boyle

Pitkanen

Volchenkov

Gleason

Meszaros

Ehrhoff

Salo

Orpik

Mitchell

Schultz

Tallinder

Robidas

Morris

Del Zotto

Niskanen

McBain

Stralman

Butler

Murray

Fayne

Falk

Gilbert

Corvo

Ellerby

Engelland

Wouldn't be surprised if Holland looked for a bargain deal outside of Boyle, Niskanen, and Ehrhoff

It's like a Scottish restaurant, lots to choose from, nothing you want.

If hell freezes over, and Boyle AND Ehrhoff choose us, suddenly we have a d-core that can play puck possession to perfection.

Kronwall-Smith

Dekeyser-Ehrhoff

Ericsson-Boyle

No line matching, just send them out the gate, a man can dream :w00t:

I don't see why Ehrhoff is getting so much term and so much money. I've never really seen him as a #1 or #2 d-man, maybe a #4.

He would become the Wings #2 right away and I'm not sure there's a huge gap between Ehrhoff and Kronwall. Niskanen was a #4 last season too and he has proven far less than Ehrhoff in comparison. Ehrhoff is a good hockey player and top pairing d-man.

Past history doesn't predict the future when it comes to injuries. Lidstrom hardly missed any games until his final season (save for that unfortunate ******** incident). He is also arguably the greatest defenseman in the history of the NHL. Part of his excellence was that he was so good he didn't have to expend a lot of energy. In Jagr's case, he pretty much took three years off by playing in Europe, with a much shorter schedule and a lot less physical play. You're pointing to exceptions, not the rule. Guys like Boyle and Alfredsson aren't going to get better. They can show flashes of brilliance because of their talent and experience, but age catches up with you.

It's also not a given that all three (or any of the three) of Sproul, Oulette, and Marchenko will succeed at the NHL level. So we sign Boyle to wait for these guys, and he continues to decline and one or two of those guys don't pan out?

To me, Boyle is a definite consolation prize.

Look dude, I'd love to be wrong. I'd be thrilled if each of them played 75+ games. But if I had to bet my paycheck on it, I think it's clear how I'd wager.
