Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 I think Tatar wants more. I love him, but he strikes me as a Hudler type. I get that same vibe, although I think Tatar deserves a bit more.

I'm almost pissed the F off you used Tatar and Hudler in the same sentence. I'm so excited for Sheahan this next year. Probably my favorite wing to watch come season time. Hudler and Brunner wanted more than they should have gotten.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 Same. I think the Nyquist deal set the standard. I see the same for Tatar. I actually think the bar is higher with the jump in the cap (now and in the near future). I think Tatar will get about $1.25M/yr for 2 or 3 years. I consider Nyquist and Tatar to be about even, and both above Sheahan. I also think DeKeyser will top $2M/yr for 2 years... maybe as much as $2.75M.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 3, 2014 Tatar is a mystery to me. The guy has aggression and an attitude the team really needs. On the other hand, he's small and was manhandled in the Boston series. And then there's the whole sophomore slump that might be coming. I love Tatar, but if we've got to trade someone with value to get a defenseman who helps us, I think he's the most likely candidate to go.

I agree with you on DeKeyser; he's closer to UFA than anyone else and, given he'll be in the top-4 pairing, I imagine he'll either get $2.5M/yr for 2 years (90%) or a $4.50M/yr deal for 4 years (10%). I believe he will be a $6M/yr candidate on the open market in two years, so it's probably best to lock him up now with the extra space available. I can't see his agent encouraging him to sign for more than two years, but being able to lock up more than $12M (after taxes and such) at 24-years-old would be hard to pass up. I love his two-way game, but I don't see him being a major factor down the road. I see him being in line with Abdelkader and Helm already, so if you're going to keep guys, I'd recommend keeping Mantha, Jurco, Nyquist, and Sheahan, first. Tatar reminds me of a guy like Jordan Staal; a great defensive forward but never a guy to excel on the 2nd line or score more than 50 points in a season. I believe the other four could all find their place in the top-six (I see a future of Nyquist- (UNKNOWN) - Mantha and Jurco - Sheahan - Pulkkinen) if all continue their development. Pulkkinen reminds me of a very young Selanne. I could see him being an offensive-zone specialist, for sure.

I don't remember him threatening to go overseas. I know he said there's a %90 chance he re-signs with us and that he wants fair market value.

I vaguely remember something to the effect that if he doesn't make the team he won't sign a new contract and may go overseas. But at that point he was right, Holland wasn't even giving him a shot.
