This obviously wasn't what anyone wanted coming into the offseason, but I think some people are overreacting. Every offseason, some teams get better and others get worse. Can you really say we got any worse? I would say we stayed almost exactly the same. The only guy we really lost was legwand and he only played for a couple months. There isn't really a spot for him anyway.

Overall, I would say the east got weaker. Boston got considerably worse, and I would argue that Pittsburgh and New York got worse as well. The only team in the east that I think got a lot better is Washington and does anyone think Washington can be any kind of threat anymore with no goalies and Ovi no longer caring about anything but goals?

Of course this could just be wishful thinking, but doesn't it seem like we're lined up to make a trade for a top 4 defenseman? We've been connected to several top guys (Myers, Yandle, Green(?), Edler(?)) through various rumors from credible sources. I won't call this offseason a failure until Holland at least has a chance to pull off a trade.

I think Detroit will be a borderline playoff team at worst. At best, they will enjoy a less injury-plagued season with Nyquist and the kids continuing to break out and with Mantha getting some playing time. I could see us potentially contending for the 1-2 spot in the Atlantic Division if we can avoid injuries (and aren't we due for some luck from the hockey gods on the injury front?)

This is also a great post.

But, similar to what I’ve said in another response, Yzerman and Nill have had more to work with in terms of young stars and high picks. No? More assets. More flexibility to be bold?

Holland’s biggest “asset moving window” was in 08-09. He could have moved Filpilla, Hudler, and Franzen for a Seguin-type guy then maybe?

Holland’s safer than houses and blander than oatmeal. But he’s still a top 5-10 GM in this league right now.

He never deserved all of the credit he received, but he surely doesn’t deserve to be butt-punched the way he has been today.

Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily disagree with anything you're saying. And, admittedly, I'm kinda cheating here. I can't say I'd like to strangle Holland and then turn around and say, "You know what I mean..." But I do think we have to really ask ourselves, What is it about Ken Holland that gets him a vote of confidence from us even now? Is he really, truly a top GM in today's league? Is this a guy who could do for the Islanders what Jim Nill and Steve Yzerman are doing for the Stars and Lightning? Would he have gotten the Bruins their Cup? Would he have gotten the Blackhawks their two Cups in four years (and counting)? Would he have gotten the Kings their two Cups in three years (and counting)? Would he have turned the Habs from a bottom basement team into a top team in the East? Would the Jets be making the playoffs every season with him at the helm? Would it almost certainly be a grave mistake for the Wings to go with a GM not named Ken Holland?

Can't compare teams that have a bunch of top 5 draft picks. We just had our highest since 91. We never started with guys like Kane, Toews and Doughty. Things were way rougher for them before there success as well. If we can get back to elite without becoming a bottom feeder then Holland is a genius

Even without additions this team will improve as the kids gain more experience and confidence. Smith and Dekeyser will be a year older and this should help. Now I dont expect much improvement on the injury front as this team is still terribly soft. On the other hand it cannot get much worse can it? The Red Wings is a playoff team with the current roster. Will be interesting to see if any deal can be made and if Mantha can compete for a roster spot.

This makes absolutely no sense at all. Quincey is one of the primary liabilities on defense. What on earth justified a raise and 2-year extension? Why not just bring up a kid from Grand Rapids at that point and see what happens? It certainly cannot get much worse really. I feel sorry for our goaltenders if this sorry excuse for a defensive lineup stands. Holland has performed very poorly over the last five years and his inaction/excuses are becoming tiring. It also makes me wonder what effect Mike Babcock has had on the prospect of acquiring players in the UFA market. I felt the way he handled Tootoo was quite disgraceful. How on earth do you justify starting Cleary and other various scrubs over someone like Tootoo who can actually provide momentum and energy to your team? I believe that he explicitly buried Tootoo in the minors on purpose. As crazy as it may sound, it just feels like it is almost time for a change of guard in the GM and head coach position.

Holland said he is not disappointed, however.

"Not in the least," Holland said. "You're talking about 4-5 players and there's 30 teams. It's free agency; it's wide open. Other teams are after these players, too. Last year we got the guys wanted (forwards Stephen Weiss and Daniel Alfredsson) this year we didn't."

Holland dismissed speculation that Detroit isn't the free-agent destination it once was or that the franchise has lost its luster in the eyes of players hitting the open market.

"Thirty teams are a destination," Holland said. "The game has changed. Players can go wherever they want. We all have the same money (because of the cap). We made some pitches. Those players chose to go elsewhere."

Holland doesn't accept the notion that free agents don't want to play for coach Mike Babcock because of his demanding ways.

"I think we got a fabulous coach," Holland said. (Team Canada executive director) Steve Yzerman has picked him for two Olympic teams and the results speak for themselves (gold medals in 2010 and 2014)."

Holland said he will continue exploring trade possibilities for a right-handed shooting defenseman and look for free-agent bargains this summer.

"Still lots of players out there that could be good one-year bargains," Holland said. "I was hoping to get a right-shot defenseman or two. They signed elsewhere, that's their prerogative. That's going to happen more and more with the cap ceiling and floor going up."

This guy is delusional. He's putting pretty much the same team on the ice. Somebody get Kenny his meds. I love at the end how he stated how there's bargains out there still. Cleary and Alfie came to mind.

I agree somewhat, but mostly I think that's a copout.

Firstly, while we didn't start with Kane and Toews and Doughty, we did start with Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Lidstrom.

Secondly, a bunch of top-five picks doesn't necessarily get you anything, as the Oilers have demonstrated. Even if a couple generational talents fall into your lap, you still have to build a team around them. The Kings didn't draft Williams or Carter or Richards or Gaborik or Stoll or Mitchell or Greene or Penner or Regehr.

Thirdly, having said all that, what does it matter that those teams were terrible forever if we were able to get Datsyuk and Zetterberg while Lidstrom was still at the top of his game?

Fourthly, I dislike this "We've taken the high road. We've done it the right way" angle. Like, I get it, and I marvel at it...but we all know it's a little dishonest. Were the Wings not terrible for years and years and years and years and years? Did we not draft Yzerman fourth overall? Have all of our decisions and strategies been full of integrity?

meh

I think the team will be okay for the regular season. They would've won a lot more games had they been healthy. This is a 5th seed team at least.

The trouble is the playoffs. We haven't solved the biggest issues: everyone disappearing in the playoffs, and our terrible defense.

Holland basically saying what he always says: "Its not my fault - it was out of my hands." Mhmmm and that terribad Quincey signing was too? GTFO. Mark my words - we won't hoist another cup with Holland as GM.

So. After a night's sleep on this I have come to realise one thing. If I tried to ignore all the posts I didn't like in this thread, I'd be left with virtually nothing to read.

Seriously though, everyone really does need to just chill. We've still got a very good, competitive team that will see improvement from our kids (both at forward and D), hopefully a return to form from our number 1 goalie, hopefully a healthy season from Weiss and a full season from Datsyuk and Z. That alone should get us a good solid seeding for the playoffs. I'll bet on that.

Yes the Quincey move does look a little panicked, but I still believe that he had a solid second half (I saw it with my own eyes after all, and I'm sure several others did). The thing with a D man like Quincey is, that when he is playing well, you don't notice he's there, such that if anyone asked you if he had a solid second half, you wouldn't be able to remember because he never did anything spectacularly good or bad.

There is, in my opinion, absolutely no reason to panic, because we haven't had a losing season since 1991. I don't need to sit here and regurgitate the facts. But the point is, I could understand if people were being defeatist and calling for KH's head if we had a horrendous season, but the fact, is, we didn't. By all accounts it was a good season, if not miraculous. And we saw the future develop right before us that I believe will be our core for years to come. They might not contain the next D or Z, but let's face it, when those guys were rookies, did anyone ever envisage them turning into the stars they are today?

The point is, this team didn't get any worse at all this offseason. In fact, it got better as the kids will have another year's worth of season and playoff experience, we;ll be healthy again (touch wood), and we subtracted some old worn out parts (Bertuzzi, Samuelsson - and hopefully Cleary but that remains to be seen). Oh yea, and we've got Mantha turning pro, and several kids in GR ready to step in and actually challenge for jobs in training camp.

So why all the doom and gloom? There is actually a lot to like about this teams future.

This is bad, guys. Quincey actually makes the team worse than if he weren't on it. Going with all kids would have been bad, but not like this. Almost any of the UFA players could have been at least a slight improvement. Did none if them want to come here either? This is a humiliating day for the franchise. Rejected by everyone even with fair offers, only to panic and sign a bad player for too Mich money instead of giving someone else a chance.Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

This is right on.

Ken Holland took a giant dump yesterday, and when everyone rejected what he's done to the Wings... He goes and throws an insane amount of money at the worst player on last year's blue line.

That's right, instead of letting the absolutely worst defenceman on the team go, he gave him a huge raise in hopes that the extra cash would magically make him a better player.

Genius move by KH.

The only way this signing works for me is if KH takes Q and K and flips them to Florida or Buffalo for Campbell/Myers. (respectively.) While both teams could take on their money and have spots for them, I can't imagine that Ken Holland is capable of this move. #1. It's includes a sign and trade. #2. It moves two guys that he seemingly cannot give up on.

Yes, I'd rather have their (Campbell/Meyers) outrageous cap-hits and the question marks they bring when it comes to their play over the only slightly less outrageous cap-hits of two players that have tread water for the last few years here in Detroit.

Shake it up, KH.

EDIT: The thing that kills me about this... KH will probably have to add something besides K+Q to get anyone to take them off our hands. How about Andersson? nahhh. Still not enough.

We did have a horrendous season. Barely making it into the playoffs. All the injuries. Goaltending and defense issues. What part of the season was miraculous? Just because nyquist went on an absolute tear in the last half doesn't make it a miraculous season. In fact it shows how bad we were that one (basically rookie) had to carry our team. Holland can talk about us needing that right hand shot on the blue line all he wants. Until he actually does something useful for once he has lost this loyal Holland defenders confidence.

It all depends on what you expect. If you expect the Red Wings to be equal or worse than the Minnesota Wild, then you're ok. (actually the Wild was better than them last year.)

If you hope for them to win the Stanley Cup or go to the Finals, then you're disappointed. We saw this team barely make the playoffs last year, I can't expect there to be a dramatic improvement with the same ingredients.

The only team in the east that I think got a lot better is Washington and does anyone think Washington can be any kind of threat anymore with no goalies and Ovi no longer caring about anything but goals?

The Caps barely missed the playoffs, beat us in all three of our meetings this season, and now have an infinitely superior coach (Oates alone was enough to sink their season) and a top four of Carlson, Niskanen, Green, Orpik, which means they'll actually be able to defend a lick and that their power play will probably be as ludicrous as ever. Also, Ovie will be playing with an unholy chip on his shoulder. I like their chances of making the playoffs. That, theoretically, hurts our chances.

In our division...

  • Boston will be a powerhouse, because of course they will.
  • TB added Garrison and Stralman and have all they need (including a bad taste in their mouths from their embarrassing first-round defeat) to be an extremely competitive team and an absolute ***** to play against. And don't forget about Jonathan Drouin. Stamkos and Drouin terrorizing Quincey. That'll be fun.
  • Montreal should be slightly better. Parenteau is an upgrade over Briere, Gilbert gives their blue line a little more punch, Galchenyuk should be healthy, Subban will continue to grow, Gionta was always a lame captain, and the whole team will surely rally around some bulls*** "We were cheated; this time it's personal" mentality.
  • Buffalo should be slightly better. Reinhart and stuff.
  • Florida should be better. Ekblad and two Wings-hating chumps in Thornton and Bolland, and stuff.
  • Toronto should be slightly better.
  • Ottawa will be terrible.

We have to hope that a relatively healthy Wings team is, in fact, a formidable one.

Quincey is better than Kindl, Lashoff and through most of the season, better then Smith. Every low tier defensemen we bring in is a disaster trying to learn babcocks system anyways. I'd rather this Quincey deal then that reported 3 years to robidas. He's overpaid but it doesn't matter it's not like we will be in a cap crunch
