You know, it really amazes me how quickly everyone seems to just want to fire KH and blow up the ship. And because of what exactly? We re-signed a guy who played well for us in the second half and has a proven track record of being a solid 3-4 D man. So we didn't sign any big name free agents, and? Did we really want Boyle here for 3 years? No. Orpik for 5 years and $5.5m? No. Niskanen for 7 years? I didn't. Stralman for 5 years? No. The list goes on and on. Guys who are cashing in on one or two good years (besides Boyle) and using the thin market to drive up their prices. It is frankly, a joke. The worst thing the wings could have done was to sign someone like that for a massive term which locks us in, blocking the path for 1 or 2 kids when they are ready either this season or next.

Why is it that we are so quick to lambast something that we don't like, yet it takes 100 things to satisfy us? I mean, for crying out loud, we're not the Leafs. It's not like we haven't won a cup in the last 50 years. And also, it's not even like we're not competitive anymore. This team was a playoff team. Granted, the last 2 years have been touch and go, but 2 years ago we took the cup champs to 7 and had them on the ropes. In that 2012-13 roster, there were 26 players who were part of this seasons roster. 26!!!!!!!! And this season, most were injured, and yet somehow, due to some strong play of guys who will form the future of this team, we made it in.

There is, quite clearly, a rebuild in progress at the moment. And it amazes me how people can't seem to get excited about the future prospects of Dekeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Jurco, Sproul, Marchenko, Ouellet, Mantha, Mrazek. Combined with a healthy D and Z and the other GOOD pieces we have on this team. So what's changed? Why has everyone become so despondent, when really, I think our time is coming right around the corner. Maybe not this year, but the year after for sure. If our kids continue trending upwards, we'll be right up there. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but to ignore the obvious positives that are emanating from this teams future and insist on throwing everything out in the trash just because we struck out on 1 day of the year is, in my eyes, nuts.

You. I like you. +1,000,000

We are building for the future while still being competitive. Mantha, Sheahan, Goose, Tats, Jurco, Ouellete, Sproul, Marchenko, Smith, Dekeyser, Larkin, AA2, Pulks, Mrazek. Those are the guys who are gonna win us our next championship. Those are the guys that will lure in the top UFA's that want to win a cup. The future is so bright but people refuse to see anything but OMG WE SIGNED QUINCEY. WORST DMAN EVER. At least he didn't miss any games to injury last year. Probably like the only guy on the team to play all 82.

Look at how many games we lost to injury/late callups last year! Pavel only played 45 games. Z played 45. Big E played 48. Weiss 26. Franzen 54. Helm 42. Goose 57, Sheahan 42. Not a single one of the top 4 C's on our roster played more than 45 games! It's hard to believe we can be struck with that much bad luck again this year.

I can't see any way in which we are a worse team this year than last year.

As I've stated in several threads, comments complaining about how fans are reaction will be deleted and will result in suspension.

Stay on topic.

Calling Holland a f---ing moron and all the other crap happening: OK. Saying settle doan that it's not the end of the world: threaten with suspension. Gotcha.

Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, well, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle... Ogie Ogilthorpe!

Damn you Kenny Holland...you offered better contracts but didn't do some kind of voodoo s*** to get guys to come here....seriously, WTF do you want Holland to do?   He made better or equal offers and lost players to teams that are no better or worse than we are.

What exactly should he do?

.....are you serious?

He should not sign a 3rd pairing defensive defenseman to a dollar figure higher than Christian Ehrhoff....

(5) A near guaranteed spot for Mantha

These are the things that usually happen when rebuilding. If you're old enough, think back to the Bryan Murray days. Lots of youngsters on the team, lots of trades happening. That was a rebuild and it was exciting. Today's team is stuck in neutral: awesome but oft-injured vets, no certain (keyword) young face-of-the-franchise players.

Quincey might now officially be the most overpaid player in the entire league.

It's because ever since the Salary Cap, Holland has consistently either been afraid to pull the trigger on the top free agents, or been able to land the free agents or create a franchise that players want to play for. Sure he has had to deal with losing some of the greats (aka Lidstrom) but he has been content with keeping this team a competitive first round team while our super star players continue to age. He is a GM that was spoiled that everyone wanted to come here and take a pay cut pre-salary cap and does not know how to handle when the big fish no longer want the lure.

Dallas Drake.

Marian Hossa.

Brad Stuart.

Brian Rafalski.

Dan Cleary (2007 version)

Mikael Samuelsson (again, 2007 version).

Daniel Alfredsson (had an excellent season IMO).

Drew Miller.

All players that were signed or traded for since the lockout that helped our team either make the playoffs or win a cup. I think that speaks for itself.

And being a GM isn't just about signing or trading. It's ensuring that your players develop properly. I don't seem to remember the last time the Wings organisational rankings were even in the top 10, yet for some miraculous reason we are ranked number 2? Is that coincidence? Is it coincidence that under Holland's watch we've repeatedly drafted guys in the later rounds and been able to get them to be successful NHL players? And yes, you can harp on all you want about how drafting is down to the scouts. Fine. But developing them is just as much down to the GM as anything. In choosing the coaches he hires. In deciding when to bring those prospects to the next level.

No one ever said KH was content in just making the playoffs. If he was content, why has he pushed so hard to sign guys this year? Why did he bother signing Weiss or Alfredsson. Was that because he saw a team that put Chicago on the ropes and thought, 'one or two more pieces and we might get to the next stage?' People are only rioting here because injuries ruined the season, and brought us down to a level we aren't used to. Think about for a minute, about the potential of this team, and the actual roster that has been carefully constructed over the years. I'd much rather be in Detroit right now than Toronto. Or anywhere else.

Ken Hollands actions lately prove to me that he is/was not the great NHL GM that everyone said he was. He must have been just the face in front of the real brains that have now all left. Nill, Bowman, and Yzerman.

The Quincey signing will go down as one of his worst deals. Better to have done nothing then this. To be rejected by most UFA's is a big sign that the Wings are in big trouble. We are in for a long year(s) ahead

This isn't even funny. This is the worst thing that could've happened. We gave Kyle Quincey a raise. I want to strangle Ken Holland. I'm not sure I've ever really wanted to strangle another human being in my life. Ken Holland takes the cake. Take a bow, you incompetent, brick-sucking disco f***.

Very well said my friend!

July 1st is both exciting and agonizing. We fans look forward to this day all year long and after an early playoff exit, it seems to be a small light in the darkness. When we have such high expectations and then do nothing, emotions tend to run hot. The fact that we were dissed by players not wanting to come here made those emotions run hotter and Ken Holland becomes the primary target. It's nice to see some much needed positive energy and logic.

Whatever. Get over it. Move forward. Hope for the best. Prove the haters wrong.  Be thankful Detroit still has a team. Going to be hard to watch, but we aren't the Dead Wings again yet.  Even if we are down the road, I'll still watch this team and support it.

Weiss didn't pass, Alfie didn't pass. Datsyuk resigned, Kronwall resigned. What do you want? We can't sign everyone. There are 29 other teams that are trying to get better just like we are. Do you want us to overpay someone just to say we signed them then to be stuck with a horrible cap hit for someone who isn't worth it 4-5 years down the road when we need to resign a bunch of our young guys?

We are building for the next 8-12 years not the next 2. People can't get that through their heads.

Instead of promoting a young player they 're sign the second worst dman we had last year with a raise. It's not just who we missed out on this year. He's been saying we need a top 4 right handed shot to bolster the blue line for years and has done nothing about it. He talks about the kids and instead gives raises to plugs that are useless.

Great, another year of the Wings have to kill a penalty in the last minutes of a game because Quincey is sitting in the penalty box.

But it is a rebuild, just of a different kind, because KH and co realised that they could break the mould, and actually re-tool on the fly and still remain competitive.

Why the hell do we need a new coach? Babcock is arguably one of the top 3 coaches in the league right now. And we should replace him with Blashill? Who has how many years of NHL head coaching experience? WHy? Out of principle?

Why should we trade Pavel and Hank away, when they have proven themselves time and time again? This team that we have right now is a better, deeper, younger team than that of only 2 years ago that put Chicago on the ropes. We've got better scoring depth, better youth.

We have promoted the kids from GR. NOt all of them, but not all of them have shown that they are ready yet either. Hence why Mantha will most likely start in GR this season, and be the first recall. Why rush your prospects when they are not ready to the point where it stunts their development?

And has actually, anyone here thought the last two seasons boring? The playoff run in 2013 was incredibly. Heartwrenching yes but it was a terrific ride. Just like this season and the battle against injuries and the rise of Gus and Tatar. For me, it speaks to how well this organisation is run, that even when the s*** hits the fan, we still make the playoffs because we draft so much better and develop so much better than the rest of the league.

Holland did not build the 90's Cup teams. He didn't build the '02 team; he spent Illitch's money to maintain it. And he pulled a Joe Dumars in '08 (dumb luck).

All of those transactions except Alfie were done with the braintrust of Yzerman and Nill. Look how those other two are positioning there respective teams compared to how Holland is with the Wings. Ive gotten the feeling that Nill drove the ship more than weve ever known. And the drafting of players is down to the scout team way more than the GM. Yes he makes the decision but all the information about the players hes deciding on is given by the scouts.

I'm not even sure what to say about this deal.  He's making 1.25 mil less than Niskanen per year.  I get that he didn't want to come to Detroit, but is Quincey worth that in any way shape or form?  Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Babcock will be gone soon, I think.  Why would Babs want to stay?  The team clearly isn't competing for a Cup, so why are Z and D here?  The good news is I think this will be it for Holland.  Another down year, first round playoff exit or missing the playoffs and he's going to be gone.  No way ownership is happy with the direction we're going in.  Holland's lack of activity over the years in free agency and during the trade deadline has scared off players from going to Detroit as they don't want to get stuck on a team that clearly isn't trying for a championship.  There is literally no sign of life from the front office and hasn't been for years.

Maybe I'm just being too optimistic, but this will be the last Kenny "We kicked some tires and we like our team" Holland July 1st day we'll have to endure.  Maybe we'll get Ray Shero lol
