I've been bashing Holland for years, but if you told me 3 years ago that he'd have gotten so low as a GM, I wouldn't have believed you.

If I started a new franchise on NHL 15, I couldn't suck on purpose as much as he'd doing right now.

According to my profile, my reputation is excellent. LOL.

This is what scares me, since we can't overpay for players anymore:

1. Maybe people really don't want to live near Detroit.

2. Maybe being an "Original 6" team doesn't mean anything to the kids in the league.

That Niskanen deal is insane! 7 years? Makes Quincey for 2 years look that much better.

Lets Go:

But it is a rebuild, just of a different kind, because KH and co realised that they could break the mould, and actually re-tool on the fly and still remain competitive.

Why the hell do we need a new coach? Babcock is arguably one of the top 3 coaches in the league right now. And we should replace him with Blashill? Who has how many years of NHL head coaching experience? WHy? Out of principle?

Why should we trade Pavel and Hank away, when they have proven themselves time and time again? This team that we have right now is a better, deeper, younger team than that of only 2 years ago that put Chicago on the ropes. We've got better scoring depth, better youth.

We have promoted the kids from GR. NOt all of them, but not all of them have shown that they are ready yet either. Hence why Mantha will most likely start in GR this season, and be the first recall. Why rush your prospects when they are not ready to the point where it stunts their development?

And has actually, anyone here thought the last two seasons boring? The playoff run in 2013 was incredibly. Heartwrenching yes but it was a terrific ride. Just like this season and the battle against injuries and the rise of Gus and Tatar. For me, it speaks to how well this organisation is run, that even when the s*** hits the fan, we still make the playoffs because we draft so much better and develop so much better than the rest of the league.

As so many have repeated, it is highly unlikely to rebuild successfully in today's NHL without tanking and thereby securing very high draft picks for a couple of years or more.

There is no future franchise player on the Wings' roster and quite possibly not in the minors (so say statistics). Yes, the Wings have some good young talent, but they don't have what a few years of top 4 picks would garner them.

Anyone (not you in particular) who mistakes Nyquist and Tatar for the next coming of 19 and 91 or for Dats and Z is deluded. Likewise, DD is not the next Lidstrom.

Let's not overlook the possibility of a trade or two. This was a notoriously weak free agent class yesterday and it didn't improve much by today. The prevailing attitude from most was that the Amazing Kenzini shouldn't overpay for crap. To that end until the Quincey signing he'd done a good job neither paying someone too much nor signing empty calories. But the Quincey thing. I threw up in my mouth a little.

We as Red Wing nation need to decide if we're more upset we didn't sign a player or two who could put us over the top from this crop or are we more upset some free agents may have snubbed Detroit. If it's the former then maybe a big trade might help move the team forward ala Shanahan. If it's the latter then yeah, that sucks. Though I'm sure Niskanen and Dorpik were sold on the Crapitals the moment they got to the Verizon Center and looked up at all those championship banners in the rafters. Perhaps other forces are at work beyond the Red Wings reach ie the status of the city in receivership. They can however build the new stadium YESTERDAY.

I'm hoping a trade can be worked before I start losing faith.

Ken Hollands actions lately prove to me that he is/was not the great NHL GM that everyone said he was. He must have been just the face in front of the real brains that have now all left. Nill, Bowman, and Yzerman.

The Quincey signing will go down as one of his worst deals. Better to have done nothing then this. To be rejected by most UFA's is a big sign that the Wings are in big trouble. We are in for a long year(s) ahead

I don't think that's the case at all. I believe what we are witnessing is just how much of an impact player a prime Lidstrom was. We all knew he was good, amazing, one of the best ever. But, he seems to be what made the '00s Red Wings teams into contenders. Every D man that was his partner had career years. I daresay that, even with all the accolades, he may well have been underrated.

I should've listened to you, GMR. I should've listened. I've gone back and forth between love and hate for this guy, but now I straight-up hate him. It sounds childish, cuz it's just a game/sport. But, s***, it's how I feel. I literally hate the guy. It's generally very hard to get me truly hate anyone. But this guy...f*** him.

And Helene and Khan and Pleiness and all you other know-nothing hackjobs...go to hell. Especially Helene. That you have a paying job while people are starving and dying on the streets makes me want to punch you in the face with a monster truck.

Why? St. James said days ago that Niskanen wouldn't sign with Detroit.

Helene St. James @HeleneStJames 6h

. I wrote that last week. More $$ & term elsewhere. / “@nikzomberg: @HeleneStJames word is Wings are out on Niskanen, any validity to that?”

I don't  hate the guy.  I just think people overrated him for years.

He inherited a great team and was surrounded by smart people.  When the money ran out, he still had the brains around him in good coaching and terrific scouts.  Plus he had Jim Nill.  Now most of the brains are gone.  Other teams are scouting in places the Wings used to scout in.  We're left with a GM who has immunity at his job, and an owner who's basically as lucid as a vegetable.

Holland will leave this job when Holland wants to leave this job.  No one will make him.

And somewhere in a dark, quiet room, Brett Lebda & Derek Meech are waiting for their calls from Kenny too at this very moment.

Mother of God!

I rather re-sign Bertuzzi and throw him on defense.  That wouldn't even be close to our worse signing today.

My fear is we trade a Tatar or similar for a no-impact defenseman.

And I don't see how, short of a miracle season, Babcock returns after this season.

Babcock should have made a push to go to Pittsburgh.  Not sure why he thought Detroit would make big moves.  He's been here long enough to know better.

I think it's both. Lidstrom was the engine that drove this team, and our GM has always secretly (or not so secretly) been dumb as s***.

Everything Ken Holland says is bulls***. All of his s*** about there isn't a hockey store, and you need a dance partner, and this is how you have to do it in the cap era - it's all bulls***. He takes us for idiots. Every single one of us. And he takes our money. And he wastes a lot of our time. I have an extraordinarily hard time believing there aren't other people who couldn't do an infinitely better job. The one thing to his credit - our stable of young talent - isn't even his doing. We have great scouts and a great player development track and lots of great people in the organization. S***, give Fischer the job. Give Ryan Martin the job. Give Draper the job. Give Babcock the job. Put Holland in charge of human resources or public relations. Or maybe he can be a trainer and massage Dan Cleary's knees all day, every day.

I'm hoping a trade can be worked before I start losing faith.

There were more FA options this year than there's been in awhile. Even Holland had the gall to say that when he was feeling pretty confident yesterday. It wasn't rich with superstars, but there were a lot of options that could've helped our defense improve a lot.

And we just gave Quincey a big raise.

And if Holland planned on making a trade, if he had any real confidence in that, why is he overpaying for Quincey now? We're not going to trade other defensemen to acquire a defenseman because we don't have anyone we could trade that would improve the situation. It doesn't make much sense, and even if a trade happens, it doesn't minimize how utterly horrific of a deal this is.

Kyle Quincey is going to make over $4 million from the Red Wings for the next two years.

Say that out loud.

I will be a hardcore Red Wings fan until the day I die. I'm not abandoning the ship. But this is nothing short of af****** joke.

I lost faith in Holland awhile ago, but if he's not replaced soon, I'm going to be losing hope in the ownership, which I haven't wanted to do, especially in light of Mr. I's current state of health. It's a hard and unfortunate situation, but someone in that family needs to step up and do something now. He's had far too many chances to do something, anything, to prove he still has a handle on getting this team going in the right direction, and he continues to come up empty when it comes to addressing the needs we have, and he continues to sign terrible players to terrible deals after the fact.

It's not even worth arguing about at this point: the Red Wings absolutely need a new GM, as soon as possible.

This is bad, guys. Quincey actually makes the team worse than if he weren't on it. Going with all kids would have been bad, but not like this. Almost any of the UFA players could have been at least a slight improvement. Did none if them want to come here either? This is a humiliating day for the franchise. Rejected by everyone even with fair offers, only to panic and sign a bad player for too Mich money instead of giving someone else a chance. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2

You know, it really amazes me how quickly everyone seems to just want to fire KH and blow up the ship. And because of what exactly? We re-signed a guy who played well for us in the second half and has a proven track record of being a solid 3-4 D man. So we didn't sign any big name free agents, and? Did we really want Boyle here for 3 years? No. Orpik for 5 years and $5.5m? No. Niskanen for 7 years? I didn't. Stralman for 5 years? No. The list goes on and on. Guys who are cashing in on one or two good years (besides Boyle) and using the thin market to drive up their prices. It is frankly, a joke. The worst thing the wings could have done was to sign someone like that for a massive term which locks us in, blocking the path for 1 or 2 kids when they are ready either this season or next.

Why is it that we are so quick to lambast something that we don't like, yet it takes 100 things to satisfy us? I mean, for crying out loud, we're not the Leafs. It's not like we haven't won a cup in the last 50 years. And also, it's not even like we're not competitive anymore. This team was a playoff team. Granted, the last 2 years have been touch and go, but 2 years ago we took the cup champs to 7 and had them on the ropes. In that 2012-13 roster, there were 26 players who were part of this seasons roster. 26!!!!!!!! And this season, most were injured, and yet somehow, due to some strong play of guys who will form the future of this team, we made it in.

There is, quite clearly, a rebuild in progress at the moment. And it amazes me how people can't seem to get excited about the future prospects of Dekeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Jurco, Sproul, Marchenko, Ouellet, Mantha, Mrazek. Combined with a healthy D and Z and the other GOOD pieces we have on this team. So what's changed? Why has everyone become so despondent, when really, I think our time is coming right around the corner. Maybe not this year, but the year after for sure. If our kids continue trending upwards, we'll be right up there. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but to ignore the obvious positives that are emanating from this teams future and insist on throwing everything out in the trash just because we struck out on 1 day of the year is, in my eyes, nuts.

Honestly, I don't disagree with you on several of these points. However, in my opinion, there's very little to like about signing Kyle Quincey. Many people (including myself) were advocating a stop-gap, someone to let the kids slip into the line-up without them being overwhelmed. At the very least, those stop-gaps brought something extra to the table - Boyle and Gilbert could help the PP, Stralman and Morris the PK. What does Quincey bring? Dead serious, I don't have a real answer to that question, no matter how hard I try.

To call the guy a solid #3-4 defender just doesn't ring true to me. He doesn't put up points, he doesn't hit or block many shots. He takes several, poorly timed penalties. To his credit, the guy's swept a few pucks out from right in front of the goal line, but all in all, I'd say Kyle Quincey is just... there. He exists and has the physical endurance to play "top 4 minutes" on this team, and he was given a raise?

I think the real issue behind the signing is that it comes off as a panic move - it feels like it was made to just barely cling on, to "play it safe". I think playing it safe would have been grabbing Boyle, Gilbert, Morris, etc. I know those guys didn't want to be here, wanted term, etc. but grabbing Kyle Quincey strikes me as playing it scared. It reminds me of grabbing Legwand because Holland needed this team to squeeze into the post-season.

I see the positives going forward - I see the youth of this team and the defensive core that is shaping up. What I also see is that Kyle Quincey is a bane on this team's blueline - he's not going to pass anything onto the kids, and he won't be adding anything positive to this team's defense corps for the next two seasons. He doesn't ruin this team's future - he just wades in the water doing nothing around it.
