Marchenko

The Wings have so many depth players (3rd and 4th line forwards and borderline 2nd/3rd line defenders). It's great to have the depth, but I don't think Marchenko moves the needle for this team over the course of the next couple seasons. Perhaps beyond 2 years, he will slide in replacing somebody, but he's a ways out to impacting the Wings roster (assuming health is maintained of course)

If he's healthy, he's the closest to being ready. I know the Wings say he's "penciled" in to start in GR, but I hope if he shows well, he's given a spot. RH shot, 6'2, offensive potential and steady in the D-zone. I've been impressed with the kid since I saw him in the AHL all star game in St. John's last year, but he's gonna be good. No use wasting him in the minors, and playing Kindl, if Marchenko is the better player come October.

I'm hoping this positive experience with Marchenko will warm the Wings to taking more Russian born players. I think we have passed on some real talent in the past due to the russian factor.

Which sucks considering some of my favorite players were Russians. Attitude or not, they got s*** done!

While everyone's moaning and groaning I think the wings kno they have guys like Marchenko, Ouelette, Sproul, Jensen, Pulkinnen, AA, Nosek, Ferraro, Callahan, Mantha, ready to go. That's like the best offseason upgrade you can ask for. Just one could make a huge difference, see: Nyquist.

They clearly didn't know that Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan were ready to go... It took loads of injuries to find out. Same thing will happen again in all likelihood with the D. If there is anything you can expect from the Wings and Holland - they never change.

That's fine. That's what I expect. Someone will go down and a kid will step in in. Perfect.

What don't people understand about depth? Injuries are inevitable. Whether it's a 35 year old Datsyuk or a 21 year old Jurco, or a 33 year old Kronwall or a 22 year old Marchenko. Injuries happen in the NHL no matter what age you are. Sure, it may be a little more likely once you get up there in age, but there are a lot of injury prone young guys in the league, as well as a lot of iron man older guys. Having veteran depth is never a bad thing. The kids will get their shot and once they do they will be ready.

I personally love the way the Wings do things. No player is ever given anything, every opportunity, every game, every shift, has to be earned. That goes for everyone, from first round draft picks such as Mantha and Larkin to the late round gems like Ericsson and Marchenko. Their is a reason we've been so successful for so long and I'm a firm believer that this is a huge reason why. How many players get thrown in the fire too early only to break their confidence, sometimes never being able to regain that confidence... It's the toughest league to play in, in all of sports, and I think it's important that the players are good and ready before they make the jump. It takes a rare player to be able to get drafted and dominate in the NHL a few months later, and we never get the opportunity to draft a Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Nathan MacKinnon, so we have to bring our players along much slower.

And what if Holland said screw it and went with the kids right from the start, and they struggled? Holland would still be getting bashed. Like it or not, a team will never willingly go into a season with half a dozen kids in the lineup. It's a risk no GM would take, unless it is a rebuilding team who has cleaned house of veteran players. In the end, they all got their chance to play. That's what matters. They have now earned their spots in the lineup. They weren't handed to them. Sure they had to play due to injuries, but if they didn't perform, they wouldn't have stayed. And before this past season, neither of those 3 players earned a spot on the Wings roster. They sure have since though. You could have made a case for Nyquist sure, but he wasn't the kind of player you put on a checking line. And you don't pass up on a guy like Alfie when a kid can still play in the AHL. Cleary was a big contributor in the previous playoff run. No surprise they brought him back. It didn't work out, but hey. When it never, the kids got to play. It's frustrating at times, yes. But that's the way it is.

I do think Marchenko has a great shot at earning a spot on the 3rd pairing. Especially if Holland can land an offensive dman via trade.

As of today there is no room for him. Regardless of how he plays. We have to many guys that can't go down to GR and we can't afford the cap hits of cutting them. As for Holland making a move-doubtful even though it is needed.

Hello from Cleary, Bert, Sammy, Kindl, Quincey, Franzen, etc.... Young players are never given anything that is true, but far to many vets are given far to many chances to show they still have it which hurts the young guys development.

I'd bet money Kindl is not a Wing come start of the season. Lashoff's only chance of staying is to be #7 and keep the press box warm.

We absolutely can afford to cut some guys and eat their contracts. At this point we aren't making splashes in FA and we have loads of rookie contracts. If a rookie wins someone's job then we should just eat the cap hit to cut the player and let the kid play.

My point was that no YOUNG player is ever given anything. You know, the one's that have never proven anything as a pro. Sure, sometimes veterans get the nod before a kid, but like I said, I don't mind that, to a certain extent of course.

Aw man I can't wait until they do one of those for Hampus Melen. Then we can have a Hampus Melen thread, and I can get a Hampus Melen jersey to wear to games at Hampus Melen Arena in honor of our new captain Hampus Melen. The future sounds amazing!

But anyway Alexei Marchenko!

Edit: Alexey? Alexee? Hampus?

taking nothing away from Nick and Homer, which are by far the best Swedes we have had. Z is up there as well, but this team accomplished far more with Russians than the recent influx of Swedes. I am not sure why they started shying away from Russians compared to before...did the talent pool dry up?
