After I got the alert on my phone that this signing had been made, I literally had to take a lap around my workplace to calm down.

I am a Wings fan for life and nothing will change that...but my god, this summer is testing my loyalty

A NTC means nothing for this contract. IF he can't keep up and play decent hockey, nobody would take him on in a trade regardless. And if he does play well, that's good for us. Only a NMC would make this signing worst. And that isn't the case.

not the point. the fact that holland would even suggest he should get a NTC, let alone actually give him one, just shows how delusional he is

It's pointless. The NTC means nothing. We weren't going to trade him anyways. If he plays bad nobody would take him, if he plays well that's what we want so we're not going to trade him. Also I don't get why everyone is so surprised. We all knew last year that this was coming.

Malik Report's open letter to Kenny: http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/an-open-letter-to-ken-holland-re-re-signing-kyle-quincey-and-daniel-cleary?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

A little long, but pretty much sums up how we all feel right now.

I actually think he went a little easy on him.

I mean, seriously, outside of drafting, over the last five years, Ken Holland's management system or style or whatever it may be is a complete mess and an utter failure. He's completely failed to adapt to the cap era since the cap actually started weighing down on the team. He got lucky early on with superstars playing for RFA money and the salary rollback, but since 2009 when he's had to actually deal with legitimate cap issues, he's done nothing but flounder. At this point, when you look at the last five off-seasons, you've got a steady stream of disasters.

Everyone in the media seems hesitant to want to be too hard on the guy based on his reputation, but it's getting too hard to ignore that he seems completely lost as a GM of this team in the cap era. Even if you give him more credit than he could possibly deserve for drafting well, there's far too many other failures and terrible moves to continue to give him the benefit of the doubt. That he ends up looking more lost and ineffective as more major people from his management team leave is also quite telling. I'm not saying that the other management team members were the true geniuses necessarily, but clearly Holland has been less effective since losing them as resources; first with Scotty, then with Yzerman, and then Nill.

However much credit you want to give to anyone though for the past, the fact remains that we have five straight years of Holland failing to help this team slow the decline, let alone actually improve, in any way other than drafting. But he's made so many bad moves outside of drafting that it's begun to nullify the benefits afforded to a team that drafts well, because he fails to build teams that have room for young guys to come up when they're ready.

It's just all so absurd at this point, and it's all been said too many times.

The bottom line is that if there was any doubt beforehand, I think today it's become abundantly clear, enough is enough. It's time for a new GM.

Getting upset over the NTC is just looking for an excuse to complain. We all agree it is not a good signing. We get it. The NTC is a minor detail that Cleary asked for to prevent ending up somewhere like Buffalo. It isn't a big deal. He wouldn't get traded regardless.

I do think calling for Holland to be fired over this is overreacting. You'd think he traded Hank and Dats for a 5th round pick with what's being said about him. If Cleary has a bounce back year, then great. If not, no big deal. His career as a Wing would come to an end. No harm done. But some are acting as if Holland blatantly passed on guys like Vanek or Richards just so he can sign Cleary instead. Doesn't work that way, folks.

This is just the Cleary (couldn't resist) on top of a 5-year in the making s*** Sunday.

Ok,

So let's say we sign Alfie and with Jurco up we have 15 forwards... one too many.

If Cleary gets dramatically outplayed in camp, or a month into the season he just plain awful, we send him to GR, he passes through waivers and we eat $1.5M in cap space and we bring Jurco back up.

OR

Someone gets hurt in camp and the point is moot to start the year...

OR

Cleary turns water into wine, raises the dead, and [insert your own favorite cliche].

OR

One or more of our forwards is/are getting traded

Maybe we have someone hurt the majority of the year, he's up on the big team, but is a healthy scratch most of the time... then he could be a like another coach/mentor for the young guys that are up.

Who knows what was actually said behind closed doors last year. If the DRW are just keeping their word on some deal they promised then they are doing the honorable thing. Now, I wouldn't have signed him last year in the first place, but I kinda look at it as if Holland signed him to a two year dear last year (cough Quincey this year)... The bell was already rung on this deal.

I'd still say that we have bigger fish to fry. I DO believe we need a RH D-man and that means trading one of our D-men at some point.

Just curious as to what you'd do different? Throw huge money at UFA's and handicap the team cap-wise? Trade away all our best players to get a few years of lottery picks, and hope we luck out and get future superstars? Trade all our prospects for impact players so we can be a great team for 4-5 years then just have to go through all of this all over again? The team spent the last few years stocking up on young talent. We are now beginning to see the benefit from that.

Sure there were some frustrating signings along the way like Sammy, and this one here today. I'm not saying Holland has been perfect. No GM in this league is. But management as a whole has done a nice job of building lots of depth in the prospect pool that will give this team a chance to stay competitive for years to come. These kids won't become big time players overnight. It takes time.

I'm not here singing Holland's praises. I'm just saying that based on his overall performance as a whole, people are blowing it all way out of proportion. I get that we all have our own opinions. The Cleary signing gives many people another reason to let loose on him. But when you take a deep breath, step back and look at the franchise as a whole, it's going in a pretty good direction. Hardly a nose dive some make it out to be. One year of Cleary doesn't suddenly derail that.

Sincerely, A guy who dislikes the Cleary signing

I seriously think Holland is becoming my most hated person in sports. Actually, he is my most hated person in sports. My roomate is from Nigeria and has watched his first ever hockey games (about 10) with me last season. He laughs that Quincey and Cleary are re signed. The fact that he understands that these players shouldn't be on the team but Holland doesn't says alot. It's all part of a bigger plan to package Quincey Cleary and andersson for stamkos....
That may get laces from the left skate of Stamkos.

Pasha will get to play with the legendary Cleary. How exiting that is.

Long read but I personally agree with everything the guy said, although I sadly don't believe Ferraro will earn an NHL spot this year. Wish my english would be as good as this guys.

I agree. While the Cleary signing is extremely frustrating - mainly on the basis that it might/will block either Jurco or another young player making the big club to start the season, you can't blame DC for still wanting to play hockey. He had a rough (abysmal) year but battled injuries all the way, so why wouldn't he give it one more kick at the can? Unfortunately it's with the Wings, but so be it. It's a 1 year deal, and it may not even get that far if he gets beaten out and sent to GR. Would he even report? Or just retire instead? Who knows. There's still lots to be decided right now. Just because he signed a 1 way deal, doesn't necessarily mean that he'll make the club. And I know, Babcock loved him, but he did scratch him halfway through the season because he was truly awful.

Marcaractac, I agree with you on your assessment of Holland. Too many people here are far too quick to judge and want answers and results fast and having to wait 4 years for another really successful team is far too long in their eyes. What the Wings are trying to do is rebuild on the fly - the pool of prospects we have now, some of which are NHL ready, is pretty impressive for how high we've been drafting. I know KH has made some awful signings, but which GM hasn't? I'm not necessarily defending KH here, but I do believe that with the talent he's accumulated we're very close to start making a run. If the wings think that Cleary can help them do that, then fair enough. Personally, I don't think he'll make the team, but all will be revealed shortly.

Seriously what the f*** are you talking about? Losing Cleary was addition by subtraction, the fact that this piece of s*** is taking both money from the cap and a roster spot from a more deserving player is exactly why Holland should be fired. Not to mention the countless other terrible moves he's made the last 4 years. The NTC is just icing on the cake.

Really? So we haven't been relevant since 2009? How much good faith do you give someone before they are in the hot seat, I think 5 years of not doing the right moves is enough of a sample size to call for changes. What did he do to fix losing Rafalski? what about Lidstrom? Or Stuart? Oh at least he brought in Bert, Sammy, Tootoo, Cleary x2, Coliacavo, Williams, White, Commodore......Yep you are right, we should all swing from Hollands nuts because he f****** managed to put a team together a decade ago, in an entirely different league. Most fans do not pay to see there team bring in players because they are bffs with thef****** GM, they pay to have the best product available, and I question any fan who would ask otherwise out of their team.

You're right, we do have an impressive pool of prospects. Shame they can't get a game because they're blocked by the likes of Quincey and Cleary.

There's really nothing to defend here. It's not the end of the world, true, but Cleary doesn't need defending or "Can you really blame him for ___"ing, and certainly Holland doesn't need any more people slobbering over his inflated legacy and ego. The guy didn't build the '97 team (wasn't even GM), didn't build the '98 team, bought the '02 team (though, credit where it's due), and miiiiiight have been the chief architect of the '08 team (but Bowman and Nill were still around and pieces from previous teams - e.g. '97 - were still on the roster). Holland's really done nothing recently to prove that he's a top GM. We could praise the fact that he doesn't make moves for the sake of making moves, but, actually, he does. We could say some quality kids were drafted by his regime, but I give the bulk of the credit to the scouting and development people.

Ken Holland is a myth. I don't want that to be true. I want to believe he's a genius and that he's 300 steps ahead of everyone. But, really, he just re-signs guys he knows and keeps the kids down as long as possible, hoping it all adds up to another postseason appearance. That's The Ken Holland Plan.
