Babcock Interview on 105.1 this morning

I like Babs a lot and this was a good interview, but I have no trust left him in whatsoever when he says "the best players will play."

It does sound though like Babs really wants to find a way to integrate the kids on defense sooner rather than later. Which who can blame him when his other options include Quincey, Kindl and Lashoff?

Babs also said the Wings didn't hand out any bad contracts in free agency. Out on the lake when the Quincey deal happened?

Babs did keep guys like Bert and Cleary as healthy scratches even when we had injuries. Though it took a while before it happened.

I like the sound of Pavel's knee maybe being 'fixed' and that Z hasn't felt this good since 08. If those two can have a relatively healthy season it'll make such a huge difference for us.

I didn't listen to the interview, I'm currently in class, so this may have been addressed, but my guess is Cleary will get 10 games so he gets his bonus money, and those 10 games will be Babcock's gauge to see whether Cleary keeps playing. But after 10 games, I don't think Cleary is in the lineup unless he can actually bring more to the table than someone else.

Would Mike Babcock trying to push Alex Ovechkin to "be the best" be a case of the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object?

I was just trying to think of someone off the top of my head who's Babs match. I mean, Ovi's devil-may-care attitude already befuddled Don Cherry into a conciliatory tone. I wonder if he'd just make Babs' head explode.

This makes my heart soar, and then I hear the theme from Reading Rainbow, then I feel like I have to go potty. What does this mean, mommy?

The Wing's front office obviously realizes that fans are upset, because this is pretty clearly Babcock doing damage control for Holland.

Here's an article also referencing the interview.

"Last year, he didn't bring anything," Babcock said. "But the year before, he was a key, key component leadership-wise, forechecking-wise, heavy on the puck-wise, just being a heck of a player for us."

He added that the investment was made after receiving a vote of confidence from the team's trainer regarding the status of Cleary's troublesome knee.

"We've been told that his knee’s really come on. If he’s on one leg like he was last year, he can’t play on our team.

"If he’s on two legs, he can help us win."

I guess we'll just wait and see what the future and Cleary's knee holds. I'm also not sure how much confidence I should give their trainer given the Wing's extensive injuries last season.

I am not a huge fan of Babcock the last few years, but that was a great interview today. It didn't sound like he was willing to commit to Cleary and accepted they may have dead money on the books. He also sounded confident about an extension.

LOL.

Is this the same team trainer who should have been fired years ago?

Obvious speculation about "damage control" aside, Mike Barwis isn't the Red Wings trainer. He's an outside specialist and (based on my very brief internet search) seems to be pretty well respected and established.

Sounds like he should be our big free agency splash. Get err done Kenny!

Mike Barwis is one of the best athletic trainers in the world, if not the best. His strong suit is injury/accident recovery. Search Brock Mealer to see how his training methods, along with a motivated individual, can produce amazing results.

...after a few weeks of thinking about it, and after hearing some interviews, if the UFA's don't want to come here, f*** em! If they don't want to be coached (like Babs said) and want to go somewhere where the team bows down to them, f*** em! (I still hate the #KFQ signing, but can kinda, sorta understand the Cleary....kinda.)

I say, this team will conquer, this team will rise, and if they don't then they will again! Get Babs signed, get these kids bridged in, lets remake this Dynasty core, Lets Go Wings!

If what he says about Pavs, Z, a JHo is true then this team will make some noise. Z, and D alone can carry this team into the playoffs. The pressure being taken off Franzen will hopefully help him out.

I don't know, that interview pumped me up for next season.

Babcock is just the best coach in hockey and I truly believe him when he says he cares about his players. Yeah he can be hard but I also think he knows how to push them without overpushing them I mean, when guys like Toews, Weber, Crosby are willing to sacrifice their own points for the good of the team the coach is doing something right. The only sad part about the whole thing is this: it will be the last year the Wings are playing for him after this year they are playing against a babcock coached team :(
