His positioning still isn't where it needs to be, and a lot of his mistakes seem to get overlooked by people who would scream bloody murder if Ericsson, Smith, etc. had done it. He's also physically weak and loses puck battles as a result. Kronwall is far better, as is Ericsson.

Still, after less than a year, he's not perfect. And he's not better than Our number 1 in his rookie season. Of course!

Dickie, I appreciate that you often try to level peoples opinions of certain players, but here i think your expectations of him must be unreasonable. he's played in the league less than a year and already solidified a place in the top 4. 2nd in pts for defencemen (with little pp time). You argued against "his amazing development" in another posts. what did you expect? He's gone from undrafted player to solid top 4 in about 4 years. (2010 was his last draft eligible year) Maybe you're arguing against his NHL development because he really good when he first made the team? he has developed a lot since then and been given an increasingly large role.

You also said in your other post that he might only become an ok #2. First of all, are we only supposed to be happy with players if they are a future #1? Second, judging a player's ceiling from their rookie season is far from fool proof. Third, you're basically saying that he, as a 24 year old, only has the possibility of improving a very little amount over the rest of his career because I and many others already consider him a solid 2nd pairing defenceman.

Good move!

Ok so after the Tatar and DeKeyser deals, Holland will need about $5.5 Million cap space to sign Smith and Nyquist next off season. Don't expect any UFA or deadline moves.

Good deal. Glad it's done. lol @ Quinceys contract even more now.

The Quincey deal makes more sense. There will be cap space available when DeKeyser's deal is up.

Right on. Who know's what Smith + Nyquist will get/demand, but this probably puts us in a good position no matter what.

People scream bloody murder if E or Smith make them because they make the boneheaded mistakes every single game. Sure DK makes them. Kronwall makes them too. But they don't make them every game. I don't sit there and think "what the hell are you doing?" every game like I do with Ericsson and Smith. Sure he has room for improvement, but right now I think without a doubt he's our second best defenseman.

Smith I understand, but Ericsson still? E has been solid defensively and the Wings best penalty killer for years. He has cut down on the turnovers significantly since earlier in his career. DeKeyser has potential and has done well so far, but Ericsson right now is much more valuable to the Wings defense.

Its a good deal. The 11 game preview "season" that was burned on his entry level contract was the price the Wings had to pay to get this kid. Last year was his rookie season for all practical purposes. Now we see if he suffers from an extended sophomore slump like other D-men *cough*ERICSSON*cough. If not, then he gets a big payday and a long term contact in 2 years. Everyone here will love it.

That was in response to the idea that he's going to be the Wings' best defensemen in a couple years. I don't see him taking a huge leap from where he is now, making him a good second pair d-man on the same level as Brad Stuart. Considering he was undrafted, that's pretty damn good, just like Ericsson being what he is as the last pick of the draft is pretty damn good. There are people on here losing their minds about him though, just like people say Ericsson early on and said "OMG he's big and used to play center and Babcock said something comparing him to Pronger once OMFG FUTURE MULTIPLE NORRIS WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Instead I look at him, look at what he's done in his short career and his age, and realize he's probably not going to be a good top pair D. At best I think he's going to be Ericsson-esque, a guy who you can use on the top pairing but is better suited to the second pair and who will soon turn into a guy people want on a lower pairing because he's not as good as they thought he'd be. At worst he'll struggle to add muscle and never really get better than what he is now and will be passed by several other younger defensemen.

great news! No doubt his hands were tied being an RFA, hopefully he proves his underpayment and gets that pay day next time. Although I could be wrong, but I think he still may be an RFA after this contract too...

anyhow, in two years time with Q gone, I look forward to:

Kronwall - Smith

Dekeyser - Sproul

Ouellet - Marchenko

I know K and E may still be signed, but we cannot hinder the kids...

Geez, in two years defensemen Jensen, Backman AND Nedomlel will ALL be out of exemptions as well! Gonna be a log jam in a couple of seasons...

First of all a logjam of good talent is never a bad thing it's the logjam caused by guys like cleary that are the problem. Second I'm a realist and there's literally 100% no way all of those young guys will make impacts in the team. I believe in sproul and oullete the most a bit in marchenko and very in little in the rest.

I still think Backman is going to surprise a lot of people.

Sproul and Backman are my two favorite defense prospects we have right now. Backman reminds me a lot of DeKeyser actually, not spectacular in any aspect of the game but very solid all around. Sproul is pure offense and if he can work out the kinks in his defensive game I think he has the potential to be a poor man's Doughty...

Your're right, he is an RFA again after the 2016 season. If he keeps getting better as we all predict, that will be when he signs his long term deal.If if regresses, he will likely sign a short term deal.

Unless he is traded Ericsson has another 6 seasons under contract. My guess is that between Sproul, Ouellet, and Marchenko, one of them will not pan out, and that will be the spot of Ericsson. If they all do (fingers crossed), I wouldn't be surprised if we traded Smith. I could actually see at some point us trading a guy like Smith and a kid for an elite or semi elite D-man.
