I don't give a damn if none of it goes up and all they do is clear all those blocks of the garbage and dilapidated s*** that's currently there and pave over the whole mess.  Even that is an improvement over the current state of affairs.

Nobody wants to locate their office building, company headquarters, shop, etc. next to a field full of garbage.  Lots of people want to locate their businesses next to something that looks nice.

Even if it doesn't come fully to fruition (and I have no idea whether it will or won't), it's still good for an undeveloped area to become developed.  Like I said, the alternative is to leave it like it is now?  That's not good for anyone.

What are we looking at here?

The picture I posted is Sprint Center in Kansas City, surrounded by the Power and Light District.

I don't really know much about it.  Is it conceptually similar to Detroit's proposed arena?

My fear is they will build the arena, then the rest of the area will continue the same with nothing else to attract the fans or visitors.  I FULLY hope the entire project happens and the downtown area, from Greektown to Foxtown to the New Arenatown are all connected and to walk to and from and or ride the train.  I think they should SEROUSLY think about connecting Metro Airport with the downtown district via an elvated train.  Can you imagine the flux of fans coming in from other cities to watch their teams play either the Wings, Lions and Tigers if they could just get off the plane and board a train that takes them right to the arena or the casino?!? Of course the casino idea would help if they went along with the ORIGINAL plan of having all three casinos near each other within walking distance...but we see how that worked out, so now you are forced to go to one at a time unless you want to drive to the others. But that would make too much sense, what am I talking about?

Does anyone know if there has been any mention of extending/rerouting the People Mover at all? Now would be a great time to expand it towards Comerica Park/Ford Field & the new arena. That's one thing I like about the Joe - you can park in so many different places & just hop on the People Mover & get dropped right at the door! A lot of times when we go to games we stay at the Ren Cen overnight, and the convenience of the People Mover is great!

Next bring the Pistons to downtown. Double the revenue at the arena. I don't get the negative attitudes towards this project. You could put a 24/7 hot dog stand and it's an upgrade to that area. I give Mr I credit for this project and wanting to keep the money in Detroit. You want the city to recover and improve this is the kind of project that can help. It's not the answers for all the cities' problems but it's a start. I will miss the Joe but this was long over due. I live in Columbus and I love going to an arena like Nationwide. Classy facility and great fan experience.

Guys and girls let's not overreact here.

Don't get me wrong I would love such a beautiful arena with all the lighting and colloseeum like seating but so far these are only pictures of the project. When it comes down to actually building it nobody knows if they aren't going to chance some things here and there just to get it done in time etc.

I honestly believe there should and can't be any discussion about the name, it has to be named after an ex player or even more deservingly about the guy who turned this franchise around from top to bottom, our very own Mr. Mike I. I love the term ICE (Ilitch Center of Entertainment) Arena :-)

Meh, add it to the list of all the other things that were supposed to transform Detroit:  Comerica Park, Ford Field, The SuperBowl, the All Star Game, the Casinos, the Cobo Expansion.  I'll believe it when I see it.  There was supposed to be a big entertainment and housing expansion with Comerica and Ford Field, too.

Not getting all the affection for Joe Louis Arena.  That place was a dump even before it opened.  It was totally thrown together without much thought.

Try getting something to live in downtown. 98% full capaicity in occupancy rate thanks to all the things you mention help jump start it all. People are on years waiting list at the moment.

The arena is going to connect midtown and Detroit. Currently midtown has been the growth all before during and after the recession. Most people at the moment are complaining about rent being high, but thats the stoners who think burger king is a carrer job. The white collar and hipster folks are the ones who are enjoying the $1500 one bedroom apartment or $200KCondo/lofts in Midtown.
