Jim Paek leaves Griffs to help run Korean Hockey

Jim Paek, the longest-tenured coach ever for the Grand Rapids Griffins, is leaving to become director of hockey for the Korea Ice Hockey Association (KIHA) and head coach of the Korean Men’s National Team.

Paek, 47, has been an assistant coach for the Griffins for nine of the team’s 18 seasons, beginning in 2005. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Park was raised in Toronto and earned his U.S. citizenship in 2011.

Under Paek’s leadership, South Korea will attempt to earn its first-ever Olympic hockey berth. The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang.

“The Detroit Red Wings congratulate Jim Paek on his appointment to the Korea Ice Hockey Association and Korean National Team,” Ryan Martin, assistant general manager of the Red Wings, said in a press release.

“We are thrilled and excited for him on his well-deserved opportunity. With the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, this is a tremendous opportunity for Jim to oversee the development of hockey players, coaches and administrators across all levels of hockey in his native South Korea.”

The Detroit organization and Griffins coach Jeff Blashill will begin a search for a new lead assistant. The Griffins are also still looking to replace second assistant Spiros Anastas, who left after the season to become coach at University of Lethbridge.

Good for him, I hope he can put together a respectable team in 4 years. It seems like a longshot, but even a country like Japan has played in the Olympics eight times.

Blash now will bring in two new assistant coaches. I wonder how this will impact the Wings' prospect pool.

In the last two years, the organization has lost:

Paek

Anastas

Renney

Peters

Nill

McDonald

Leach

Do other organizations have this much turnover? It might be totally normal, I've just never thought to follow it until now. Seems like a lot of high profile personnel to lose in a short span.

Didn't you know? The Redwings org has lost its shine. no one wants to be here anymore. It's only a matter of time before the fans start leaving.

I don't think it's a reflection on the organization (in a negative way) or anything. I wasn't suggesting that. It just seems like an awful lot of turnover. I'm just wondering if that's normal, and I've just never paid attention, or whether it's just coincidental.

I know you personally wasn't suggesting that. But a lot of folks seem to think that on here.

Being a Wing helps your cause, whether you're an AHL assistant coach or an NHL assistant coach or the chief of scouting or in player development. Other organizations want a piece of That Magical Detroit Red Wings Formula for Success. It's true, though - there's been an awful lot of turnover lately, more than even the Wings are really accustomed to. It's too bad we can't get compensation.

We're so bad, that people would rather go to North Korea than work with the Wings.

GMR.....I need to go welcome you there then...Hillbillypantherfan is my name there.......hahahahahahhahahah

I honestly never knew that he worked for the Wings. Shows you how much I care about GR. I just knew him as a jobber that won the Cup with the Pens in 1992, and was one of the few Koreans in NHL history.

I'm happy for Paek. What an honor.

Although the realistic chance of Korean hockey making any noise next olympic is pretty much nil, I can't think of better person in charge.

good luck

The South Korean team would get destroyed by the North. Kim Yung Un averages 14 goals a game between his trips to the moon and shooting 18 on an 18 hole golf course.

Apparently Kim Yung Un is one of the best dancers in the world too! Sorry, 1st round exits and Holland's signings can make a Wings fan kind of senile this time of the year.
