Tatar Signs 3 Year Deal $2.75 mill AAV

If you remove Jurco's salary (assuming Alfie returns) it leaves a little over 6 million for DD and Alfredsson. Looks like they'll be right up against the cap again.

With a roster that's nowhere near the league's best, no less. That's totally on the GM for letting a mediocre team be up against the cap.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm not saying I don't like the deal, I just think it is over payment right now. I think he definitely has the potential to be worth more than that and for this to be a great deal in a couple years. But that's just what it is, potential. I just think RFA's can't negotiate with any other teams so their leverage goes down significantly. I think it's over payment, but because Tatar doesn't deserve it, but more because I don't think Holland 'had' to over pay that much...

That's how these contracts go. Over payment at the start, bargains by the end.

Sums up my feelings exactly, a contract that he can grow in to. Also retain his rights beyond end of contract, big 3 years ahead for him and wings!

Also, we should use this as a guide for the type of money Gus stands to earn in the off-season next year. Would guess he'd earn more.

way more than riley and gus got

It's a surprise that Sheahan was signed to such a good deal.

Nyquist was signed prior to last season, before his numbers exploded. Tatar would have had a similar deal if he signed last year too. Good timing for him, bad timing for Goose.

In 3 years we will say this signing is a steal. Look at all the people that complained about the Kronwall signing at first. The cap will continue to go up and he will be a bargain scoring 20-30 goals a season.

I dunno, he'd have to really really step up his defensive game. Tatar is pretty much a clone of Kadri

Yes. Another good thing about these deals is even if the player doesn't pan out, it is never a cap killer. Having said that, I think the chances of Tatar not panning out are as likely as me winning the lottery.

The only problem I have with these types of deals is that the player will always earn more than they should. Sign for a few years that you grow into, then you sign your next deal that overpays early again for you to grow into it, etc. Perhaps they'll be a bargain by the end of the deal, but what about the years leading up to the end of the deal? I'm using hypotheticals now, but if a player signs for 5 years that turns out to be a bargain in the last year or 2, it doesn't change the fact that he was overpaid for the majority of the contract.

In Tatar's case, I don't think that is a big issue though as even if he is overpaid for the entire thing, a 3-year, $2.75M contract is not going to cause any issues. It's the long-term, high dollar contracts that suck.

I mean, in a full season Tatar's going to give you 20+ goals. To me 20 goals is worth 2.75 million, every day of the week. 20+ goals and shutdown defense will get you 5 million plus. Ask Kesler or O'Reilly.

Tatar's getting paid what he should.

....aaaaaaand the mob goes wild?

Nope, it's what I thought he was going to get based on what Flip got back in the day.

Dekeyser 5 @ $4.5M.

Tatar 4 @ $3M

Sheahan 3 @ $1.5M

Glendening 2 @ $1M

Dekeyser, I have no problem paying him that much right now. He is already on par, arguably better, than Ericssons. I would do 8 years @ $5M per and be satisfied.

I was wrong on Sheahan, in the ball park on Tatar. As I said in the "Predicting our RFA Contracts" thread, he got Flip money but that money is a lower cap hit percentage now. Gus is gonna get paid next off season. If he puts up another 25G+ season $5M will be on the table I think.

Wow, way more than I thought it would be, and I do think it's over payment but like a lot of others are saying, I'm just happy to have him re-signed.

$2.75 mil per for 3 years for a guy who only got less than 20 goals cause he was a healthy scratch for the first 9 games? I'll take that deal any day for Tatar. His value is high for the team and will only get more valuable.

Damn right homie! Agreed 100%. Tatar will be a bargain when he gets 25+ goals next season, and the next, and the next.

I concur with those saying it's a good deal. It may be a slight overpayment now, but if he is consistent with bringing 20+ goals and the same energy and drive he showed last year, it is going to be a bargain. I hadn't realized he'd still be RFA after a three year deal until someone posted it in this thread. That is going to come in handy for the next contract negotiations in a big way, imho.

This is a good number, especially on a three year deal (and he's still an RFA when this contract expires??).

Like kip said, he's going to be a 20 goal scorer (he almost was last season), and he has that Helm like tenacity and heart, even if he doesn't have the 6'2" frame. The team seems to feed of his energy and he's capable of being an integral part of the team moving forward. The caphit this season will be slightly overvalued, unless he really grows as a hockey player this season, but the following two seasons if he really continues to develop, he just might be able to push 30 goals a season. This is a fair contract for both sides, but the potential deal in the second and third years outweighs any negatives the cap-hit brings.
