Candiens, P.K. Subban agree to 8 year contract

Some of this definitely has to do with the bridge deal. For the last two years he was underpaid compared to his peers who signed long term contracts when their entry level contracts expired.

A good take on it, written before the signing:

Let's look at how much Subban earned in his pre-arbitration eligible Group 2 seasons, in comparison with what Karlsson, Pietrangelo, Doughty took home:

Player Pre-arb. earnings
Alex Pietrangelo $10.5 million
Erik Karlsson $10.5 million
Drew Doughty $12.5 million
PK Subban $5.75 million
It's a massive disparity.

This is how long-term deals with star Group 2 players generally work though, the player receives short-term security in exchange for giving up some UFA seasons, while the club gets an excellent player on a deal with a lower averaged annual value (or cap-hit).

It's worth remembering that when the Canadiens signed Subban to a bridge deal in January of 2012, they changed the dynamics of the incentives at play and burned some of their ability to lower Subban's salary cap-hit on a long-term contract

...

Put it together, and you probably have a range of reasonable outcomes that falls somewhere between $70.5-$75.5 million over eight years. If the Canadiens and Subban avoid arbitration with a maximum-term contract, the defenseman's cap-hit will exceed $8 million per season with ease.

I think Subban is a real good player and all. But they should have let someone offer sheet the guy and taken the picks. One guy, even a top flight defenseman, doesn't make a Stanley Cup winner. This is way too much for any single player, and their depth will suffer for it. They'll have a never ending string of plugs and inexperienced kids populating their team for the next 8 years.

Why not?

Even the s***tiest players in the NBA make that kind of money.

Or baseball.

Yeah , at least in baseball they play what, 500 games in a season?

Most of it is spent standing and chewing gum, but who am I to judge?

Just wait a rod will make 30m a year for next like four season. As a mediocre player at the age of like 40.

That's equal to us paying alfi 15m.

He's a 25 year old star defenseman and the cornerstone of their team along with Price.

Are people saying he's not good enough? His attitude doesn't warrant this deal? Or are you guys saying only forwards should get this kind of money?

I agree he is a star. And this is a market value deal. But it show just how much prices are going up...

They are.

Most definitely. I've been waiting for it for a while now. It'll come sooner or later because these escalating contracts will only continue to get bigger and bigger. It is fundamentally, a joke. PK is a great player, yes, but no guy is worth that kind of money IMO.

People need to stop pointing to these "escalating contracts" and suggesting we are headed to another lockout. Every player in the league could sign to the league minimum ($550,000 or whatever it is now) and it would have a "zero" impact on how much cash ends up going to the players. Scenario A - every player in the league signs for $1M, scenario B - every player in the league signs for $10M. Under both scenarios A & B, total cash compensation to player will be the same...that's how the CBA works. Player contracts are simply used to determine how the player's share of revenues is divided amongst the player group.

- Fighting your team mates

- NBA attitude

- risky in your own zone

- putting yourself always over the team

= reward 9 million per, I always thought this guy is Montreals version of Karlsson but Karlsson doesn't come with attitude problems. Ok he is playing under an absolute microscope so give him 0.3k per more that's 6,8...but But what do I know Montreal - like someone has quoted - is it's own hockey universe. And all of a sudden even on an 8 year contract Webers 7,85 AAV is an absolute steal, same goes for Doughty, Keith, Chara, Suter, Pietrangelo, Vlasic, Kronwall, Seabrook, McDonagh, Phaneuf.

Man the arbitrator really must have hated Montreals presentation 82 million for 8 years ...

as for their lockout: As long as we aren't changing the commissioner they are going to come prepare for it and since fans are always crawling back, nothing will change. The only way to stop this crap is for thee NHLPA to decertisfy

Well aside from the fact that if you paid each player one million you wouldn't hit the cap floor and ten each would be way over the cap. You have to look at the fact that each player ISNT paid equally. And contracts like this DO drive up other salaries. So come time for a new cba they will definitely say the players make too much money again, and budda boom budda Bing, another lockout

Inflation happens. Kane and Toews set the new standard, and I'm sure their agents had them do it on purpose. No biggie. Everything goes up over time. People acting shocked and annoyed are being ridiculous. Did they think the cap would go up and everyone would just keep making their old salaries? The world doesn't work like that.
