Greatest Wings game ever

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hockey withdrawal symptoms have reached a point of catastrophy. To alleviate these symptoms I'm watching the entire 97 cup run and will spend most of September watching the 98 run also.

This got me thinking. If you could name one Wings game that you saw that was in your opinion the greatest game you've ever seen, what would it be?

For me it's game 6 2002 WCF vs the Avalanche because it just demonstrated just how dominant Hasek really was and Roy's gaffe was such a beautiful moment. Even better that it virtually cost the Avs another shot at the cup. I just remember being so elated with joy after seeing us stick it to Colorado. That series and that rivalry had so much passion and intensity and I can still hear Gary Thorne's voice as Shanny put the puck past a showboating Roy.

What about anyone else?

Live....for me it was Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals. Even though it was taken away with a minute left, I have NEVER felt what I felt in the building when the wings were 1 min away from winning the cup. Then to be on the edge of your seat through 3 OT's, with the Wings being 1 goal away.....simply amazing! Ending sucked, but the intensity was awesome!

Still pisses me off that in OT Pittsburgh didn't get a penalty when the puck went over the boards, hit the netting, came back in,and they played like nothing happened!

I just watched the 96 Wings Fedorov 5 goal game on NHL network the other day. The Russian five had that amazing highlight real bing bang cycle play you see on all the highlights of them. I pretty much love any game from that era. Does anybody know where I can buy DVDs of the 96-98 team? Maybe like the playoff runs or something. I know I can find them online but I want them to keep

That game 7 against the Blues in 1996 was awesome. I know it was 0-0 the whole game, but still exciting.

Game 3 in the 2002 SCF was pretty good too. Same thing with game 5 of the 2008 SCF. Any time a SCF game goes three overtimes, it will be exciting.

I don't remember the exact year of the game vs NJ. Probobly 1996. That was one of the most intense and exciting games i have ever seen. Wings trailing the entire game. Full of fights involving Mac, Lapointe. Big hits and awesome goals. I thing it ended 5-4 wings.

The game was played on December 19, 1997.

Wings 5 NJ 4

Here some highlights from that game.

There are a ton of games to choose from, but when you get right down to it March 26th, 1997 is THE game for me. It had it all. Roller-coaster score, retribution, goalie fight, poetic justice, blood, a raucous crowd, the unexpected (Larionov starting a fight?!) highlight reel goals and saves and a Wings win in overtime.

March 26th for sure. That game meant everything to us ending our 42 year streak. A couple other games live that stick out to me was game one of the 2002 Western Conference finals vs. the Av's when McCarty scored the hat trick in the 3rd against Roy. The Joe was insane!

Also Franzen's 4 goal 2 assist game against the Sharks in the playoffs was the most dominate individual effort I have ever seen in a game live.

March 26th jumps to the fore, it's a historic marker which I think elevates it above the others. That being said the 7-0 game vs Colorado is close as is the 2-1 win to sweep the Flyers. The greatest one I ever saw live (and I've seen hat tricks by LaPointe and Fedorov) was waaaaaaaay back on February 23, 1989. I had to do some research to find this game and confirm all my claims lol. Some buddies and I left work to go get SRO tickets as the mighty Mario Penguins were in town. The building started out ugly as the Wings fell behind 6-0. SIX TO NOTHING. By the end of the night the fans were jumping on one another and hugging and it was one of the loudest nights I've ever heard JLA, the Wings stormed back to TIE the game at 6-6 where the game ended. Way too much fun, waaaay too many beers.

That game was incredible.

Try as I might to come up with something more original, it has to be June 7th, 1997 for me. Nothing has come close to matching the feeling and emotions of that game and the celebration after.

But we got there largely because of games like March 26th, 1997, too, so...that whole season was just special. From the game in which Shanahan debuted, after rushing to Detroit after the trade was completed earlier in the afternoon, through to June 7th, it was just a magical season.

The NHL has started putting a lot of newer stuff on iTunes, but they've yet to really go to the archives with some of the older classic games. It's surprising to me. Seems like money to be made. I did pick up game 6 from the 2008 finals for $1.99, but for whatever reason it's only in standard definition, which is also surprising/annoying. Hopefully at some point they'll go through and add more and upgrade the quality of the content that's already available.

March 26 was huge. I didn't watch it live though, but it was watching that game about 5-6 years ago that got me back into hardcore hockey mode and made me the Wings fan I am today.

I always loved the game when Yzerman buried the overtime winner against St. Louis with the dirty clapper he unleashed, Patty Roy's last game as a Hab, and of course the 97 Stanley Cup win.

Pretty sure that was a Blues team with Gretzky as well.

Gretzky turned the puck over to Yzerman, who then scored the game/series winner.

Another vote for March 27th of 97 here. The game that really solidified this team I to a group of guys who believed they could win the cup that year.

They were brothers for life after that game.

I'll also throw in for March 26.

Although this year one game that was really exciting to watch was that game against Pitt where Alfie had the game winner with less than a second left in OT. Detroit takes the 2-0 lead and you feel good, then they let Pitt score 3 straight and you kind of think, "well they've given games away all year." Then Detroit scores 2 straight and you feel good again cuz you think they just came back and there's no way they give it up again. Then Pitt ties it with like 4 minutes left or something and your stomach just drops. And then the PP in OT for Pitt, then Alfie scores with less than a second to win it. Amazing roller coaster of a game.

Also, when it was tied, Legwand took that stupid 5 min penalty to guarantee the Penguins a PP for the rest of regulation. Just a great win, especially in a year where every win counted and they were without their two best players.

The 7-0 squashing of the Avs in 2002. It was the pinnacle for my love of the organization. I've lived in Colorado since 1995 and often had rivalries with the Av fans. When the Wings murdered the Avs 7-0 it was, in a sense, a victory in the final battle.

And that was after Shanahan missed a wide open net in the final minute of game 5... only to lose on a Forsberg OT goal that should have been whistled offside. I had trouble sleeping that night thinking we had blown our chance and it was over. The way we came back in game 6 and 7, to this day, it's still my favorite playoff series of all time.
