This may have been posted elsewhere, but I thought it warranted a discussion considering it's August. They stripped Jumbo of his C. That's a pretty big blow to a good player if you ask me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last captain to lose his C was Luongo to Henrik? Which made more sense since he's goalie. To me this screams a Thornton trade is coming. No way Joe is happy about this. I think any player would take it personally.

Sorry, can mods correct typo in title?

I think it's a good idea. They been under performing for awhile(I believe before even joe was there). So this is a way to light a fire under some peoples asses and maybe find a better leader.

I have nothing against how as he was one of the bed set up guys in te league. But maybe he isn't captain material? I don't know.

IMO, and this is coming from a spoiled Red Wing standpoint, once you give a guy a C you mark him as that for his career. You don't take it back and you don't trade him (Unless things go horribly wrong). If you do either of those you probably shouldn't have given that guy a C in the first place, or you should have just rolled with 3 A's. I personally think they should have just let him keep it until they trade him. If I was him I'd be pissed if my C was stripped from me and handed to Pavelski near the end of my career, and as they continue to expect the best from me.

Reports indicate that San Jose wanted to trade Thronton earlier this offseason, but Thornton said no (he has a no trade clause). I think this is SJ's way of getting him to back-down from that stance.

Kind of a d*** move if you ask me, Thornton loves SJ, and as a result took a hometown discount (6.75mil over next 3 years), then 5 months later they try to trade him??? 7 months later strip him of the C??? You didn't want him, don't sign him. As much as fans hate Holland for the Cleary signing, these are the types of things players remember. A team like Detroit has a reputation of taking care of its own, SJ now look like a team who don't give a crap.

They also did this to Marleau in favor of Thornton. Maybe they should figure out something else instead of killing morale within their own club.

In addition to taking the C away from Marleau back when they gave it to Thornton, in the story you it says they also this time stripped him of the A. So Marleau when from being captain, to an assistant captain, to nothing..........way to treat your players San Jose. They are lucky they are not a huge market, if they were a Toronto or New York etc. the media would be all over this story.

;)

Sharks post-season is always a disappointing spectacle... perhaps they thought they would start out the year in chaos, and reverse psychology would kick in?

From what I've heard (word of mouth) a deal was all but done for him to come to Detroit but he refused to waive his ntc

If this is their way of trying to get him to waive his ntc, it's a dick move. Don't want him as captain want to t rade him ? ! Don't re-sign him and don't give him a ntc then simple as that.

If Wilson really believes Marleau and Thornton are the only problem there, he is out of his mind. This team has lost against the stanley cup winner and for whatever reason couldn't get the job done after leading 3:0. I mean it's hard to see the Wings direction but in terms of San Jose I don't see a direction, they aren't rebuilding/tooling and they haven't signed anybody of notice maybe it's a hybrid build.

If I where Thornton I'd be pissed and tell them about it, they can't t rade him he will get his money no matter what.

For clarity, the C was stripped from Marleau in favour of Blake and then it went to Thornton the following year after Blake retired. Interesting to note...5 years later, Marleau is still around so I'm not sure I'd jump to conclusions that Thornton must be pissed and he'll be gone soon.

For some reason, I thought the removal of the C was news way back at the beginning of the off-season...perhaps it's just official now or perhaps my brain is malfunctioning. My point being, if this was in the works back then, I doubt they are doing it to force Joe to waive his NTC.

I haven't heard any of the rumours of potential movement, but that could happen as well. The PR spin being put out there of course is that they want a fresh start and have the C and A's determined out of camp. Joe may very well end up with the C again, who knows....would be very strange though.

I very much think they're trying a rebuild on the fly. The only difference is we are already a few years into ours, and they are just starting theirs this year. Also, we are going the classy route and letting our core retire here. They are not. Albeit, of their vet core (Thornton, Marleau, Boyle) only Marleau is a career Shark and that group never brought the team a cup, unlike our Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall core.

So they let Boyle go, and are now probably trying to trade Thornton, so they can pass the torch to the new core of Pavelski, Couture, and Vlasic. This last season seemed to have been their old groups last chance before they were ready to commit to a retool.

Anyone frequent Sharks message boards? Wondering what the discussion is like there....any additional insights, etc.

From the looks of it they are in complete blow up mode. Fire Mclellan. Get something for Thornton and Marleau while we still can. That whole deal. They also seem to be talking about a Marleau for Marchand trade based on a rumor from the spring.

Jumbo Joke will go down in history as a great player and a Hall of Famer, but a guy that never got to the Finals in his prime. He might get to one in his later years, riding some other team's coattails. Tough to say whether that's his fault or the supporting cast. Likely his, because he hasn't exactly gone down swinging in the series where his team gets eliminated (usually the 2nd round)

You never know. Marleau has played well since he's been stripped of the captaincy. Maybe it'll work out (in the regular season).

Trading a star player for a pesty clown? What is Marchand's offensive upside? There has to be more in that trade.

Just paid a visit to letsgosharks... It's very similar to here actually. Lots of frustration. The level headed fans realize that they're still a very good team though.

Apparently Mclellan said "our toughness is our power play" lol I almost died laughing. Right out of the Wings textbook haha.

I'm sure there is, I only glanced at the "rumor"

Right now, Marchand is a 25-30 goal guy, his offensive production in not that much less than Marleau, plus, Marleau is 35, Marchand is 26.

So, what you lose in offsense is minimal (if any if you consider age and more years in prime for Marchand) you pick up in sandpaper. Marchand is a bit of a dick though, so you have to consider that.

Yea, but if San Jose was Detroit, Joe wouldn't have lasted this long here. Us Wings fans would have booed him and Marleau out of town after 2010-11. Plus Joe would have received huge criticism from Wings fans and media for not shooting enough.

I think taking the C away from Joe is the right thing to do. The Sharks need new leadership.
