I think the term "doorknob" used above is about right. I've always got the impression that Smith was the epitome of a dumb jock. Lots of talent, nothing between the ears. We've been lucky over the decades that our team has been full of pretty articulate, ambassadors of the game. So we tend to forget that a lot of athletes are dumb as s***. Brandon Inge was dumb but athletic. Matthew Stafford is dumb but athletic. And sadly, I think Brandon Smythe is dumb but athletic.

Agree, not everyone can be Larionov, play chess and speak 5 languages. Sometimes you're Brendan Smith, P is for puck, and that's good enough for him.

I'll just leave this here. Apparently Smith will be a risk free player this year... According to Smith.

"I have it on good authority that Brendan Smith's game will be risk free this year. And that he's the best yahtzee player on the team. Oh, and he makes a mean lasagna. And he once beat a polar bear in a dance-off. Oooh, ooh, and he's as handsome as a young Richard Gere" -Brendan Smith

I said ît at the end of last year and I'll say it again ... I think with nestrasil's strong play at the end of last year and after tonight , if he gets a few more games with multiple points I'm way more worried about him getting picked up off waivers than Ferraro or Callahan

Was anyone here at the game and have anything to say about his play?

Kronwall isn't playing for a job?

Just trying to make the point that just because he was -2 doesn't mean he's the worst player ever and since the best player we had in the game also was -2 it probably shouldn't be used as a "omg cleary sux."

I agree he's playing for a job and if he wants one he needs to play well, but a stat line that says -2 doesn't tell me anything about how he personally played.

Missed the point cleary is the worst player. Go look at some stats from the last 3 years.

Kronwall is not comparable to cleary at all please stop with that non sense.

Didn't you know..."OMG Cleary does suxs"! For the remainder of the season, whenever possible, Cleary, Quincey, and Kindl will be ragged on and denigrated to the absolute maximum. Because, ya know, a bottom six forward at the end of his career and tweener defensemen make all the difference in the world to the teams success.

I'll be the first to admit I want Cleary to have nothing to do with this team, but it's the preseason. Just like someone could light it up now and suck during the regular season, someone else can crap the bed and still work out in the regular season. I'm still expecting Cleary to get in his 10 games and prove to be an ineffective player, but I don't think that has much to do with what's going on right now.

I'll never understand how a fan of a team can hope for a player on that team to fail... hoping that Cleary sucks, hoping he doesn't get in his 10 games is ******* ridiculous...

As a fan of the team, and a huge fan of Cleary as a person, I hope he has a career year and blows every skeptic away with his solid play. I know it's not likely to happen at this stage of his career but I'm not about to hope he fails...

I really hope that Nyquist - Zetterberg - Franzen line stays intact to start the season. I think they will dominate. @ Jesusberg - I know right? I wish Pulkkinen would be put in a position to succeed, on a scoring line. He's not a checker, so stop using him as one...

I definitely agree. I don't like plus/minus anyways, so without seeing the game, I also don't know how well Cleary actually played.

I still don't want Cleary playing on opening night, but I want to see if he can actually skate again before I write him off entirely.

I'm with you on the Cleary bashing, but not completely about Kindl.

He doesn't deserve whipping boy status, but my frustration with Kindl is he was supposed to be, and more importantly has the skillset to be much more than a tweener defenseman. Even then, him not living up to that potential wouldn't be as big of a deal had Holland not handed him a 4 year contract, which I don't blame Kindl for.

Either way, yes it would be nice to hope these guys succeed rather than salivate at their potential mistakes.
