kliq 3,755 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Can't link to it from work, but Khan's just tweeted that Mantha's out 6-8 weeks with a broken right tibia. Khan via Malik: http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/anthony-mantha-out-6-8-weeks-with-broken-tibia Guess that means Jurco will start the season with the big club. Ouch, that sucks. At least its not an injury to a joint. He should make a 100% recovery from this.

joesuffP 1,746 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Awful news. Ah well, he'll have a legitimate shot next year at training camp. Hopefully with a chip on his shoulder Edited September 18, 2014 by joesuffP 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Dude still has a chance of being a regular on this team sometime this season. It's not like you make the Wings out of camp or don't make the Wings at all. Anyway, crappy news for him. This has nothing to do with conditioning age etc and serves as a reminder that the Wings really do have bad luck with injuries. Reminds me of the time Kronwall broke his leg in California during warm-up after he got caught in a rut on the ice. 1 wings4thecup06 reacted to this
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 I don't think anyone thinks that because of this injury he won't be a regular in the Wings lineup... I just don't believe he will make the Wings lineup this season, unless there is a massive run of injuries again this season, which I am doubting. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a call-up at some point but I don't think he will be a regular until 2015-16 at the earliest... That's just my opinion. sleepwalker 512 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) @krsmith17 If you (or anyone else) can't use the quote function and are having problems, you should contact the admins and let them know. I have had the same problem for like a year now, but they told me it must just be me since nobody else contacted them. If enough people having the quote (or lack thereof) problem and report it to them, maybe they can figure it out and fix it. krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Yeah, I've mentioned it before too. I've been told to download a different browser and it should fix the problem, but I tried that and no such luck. I use this account on my home computer, my work computer and my iphone and the quote function doesn't work on any so I'm assuming it's my account...
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Whether it's now, or in two months, I highly doubt Mantha will stick with the big club this season. That extra slide year on his ELC is simply to good for Holland to pass up. I assume he'll still get a look at some point, but he won't exceed the 9 games he's allowed to play without altering the slide. It's a shame, though, as I think he could have really turned some heads in the pre-season. Hope he has a speedy recovery. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 s***ty. Was looking forward to seeing what Mantha-Datsyuk-Helm would've looked like on the ice.
wings4thecup06 504 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 As much as this news sucks, I'm going to put a positive spin on it, because I feel like it. 1. This increases dramatically the possibilities of Jurco starting the year and remaining with the Wings - where hopefully they'll reunite the kid line from last year with him, Tatar and Sheahan, whom I thought were truly tremendous. Not only does this add to our scoring depth, it allows the 3 of them to grow their game at the NHL level together, feeding off each other and reaching new heights. Add into the fact that if D and Z are healthy, they won't be playing against top line opponents, which maximises their opportunities for success. 2. While we may have seen Mantha start the year with the Wings (I felt it unlikely, but no one could count it out), his injury/rehab process will mean that he will definitely start his pro career in GR, which is at this stage what I feel is best for him. Get his confidence playing against men, and then he can help the Wings down the stretch next year or as a playoff black ace, while getting a cup of coffee at some point along the way. 3. It opens the door for others - Pulkkinen especially, and that free roster spot may now open the door for someone like Callahan to prove he's worth more than say Andersson. The negatives I can see from this: 1. Mantha doesn't get to even participate in camp, nor play pre-season games against pro opposition. 2. He'll be rehabbing, unable to use that leg for 5-6 weeks, which will put his progress back a little way. By no means is it insurmountable, but not the kind of start you'd want to your first pro season. 1 Wheelchairsuperhero reacted to this
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Someone needs to explain to me why some posters believe this helps Jurco's chances...? It wasn't like Mantha was the reason Jurco will start the season in GR. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Someone needs to explain to me why some posters believe this helps Jurco's chances...? It wasn't like Mantha was the reason Jurco will start the season in GR. Not the sole reason but if Mantha had impressed enough to make the team, that pretty much would guarantee Jurco would start the year in GR at least in my opinion. With one less body to compete against, his chances of sticking with the big club at the start of the year improve dramatically, especially without Alfie around & his main competition being Callahan & Ferraro who I still think would both make it through waivers. 1 wings4thecup06 reacted to this
PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Someone needs to explain to me why some posters believe this helps Jurco's chances...? It wasn't like Mantha was the reason Jurco will start the season in GR. Jurco's main competition for a roster spot is Alfredsson if he returns. But, Holland has said that they were giving Mantha a chance to make the starting lineup - so even if Alfie doesn't return there was the possibility that Mantha is in Detroit and Jurco's in GR. Now that Mantha's injured, if Alfie doesn't return, Jurco should be on the team unless madness ensues and Cleary gets his roster spot (sadly, this is likely, IMO at the beginning of the year). It does help his chances, but only depending on whether you believed Mantha had a shot.

Exactly. It's one less (and more heralded prospect) for him to have to compete against. Now all he's got to really worry about is Cleary.
Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 I think Jurco should be assumed to be on the team after this. Cleary gets the chance to take a roster spot (much like Sammy last season) and we need only wait for an injury during camp or the preseason to put him out for months and by the time he is healed up Jurco/Mantha would be a regular and untouchable (like Nyquist and Tatar last season). I think Alfie is done. I think Cleary is done. THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 Well I guess we'll never know how things "would have" played out, but I still believe that Mantha had a zero shot at making the Red Wings out of camp, therefore Mantha's injury has no barring on whether or not Jurco makes the big club. In my opinion the only thing that will keep Jurco down to start the season is if Alfredsson is ready to go on October 9th against Boston - I hope he is. In my opinion the only thing that will keep Jurco down to start the season is if Alfredsson is ready to go on October 9th against Boston - I hope he is. I agree with your sentiment, but I don't think there was zero chance. Its all irrelevant now, but I feel that if he had truly shown he was ready - by tearing it up in preseason games - Babs would have asked KH to find a way to have him on the roster. And in that way, that's why I feel it had a potential impact on Jurco's making the team or not. As for Alfie, unfortunately I can't see him starting the year with the wings especially as he isn't coming to camp. I reckon it;s more likely that he signs around December and plays half a season, assuming his back holds up. It's not like he'll be out of the state and its make the team or go home, now that his family is in Michigan.
joesuffP 1,746 Report post Posted September 18, 2014 A lot more attention will be paid to Jurco I'd imagine. More ice time with the top guns
TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 I'll be shocked if he makes the team now (this season that is). It's one thing to play in the preaseason and slowly get used to the NHL level, and try to earn a spot. But I highly doubt (especially the way Kenny is) that Mantha will go from injured and not skating for weeks, straight into the NHL regular season. On any team odds would be Mantha doesn't make the team this year. On the Red Wings, it's a 100% certainty. Although It wouldn't surprise me at all if the injuries start to pile up, in which case I guess anything is possible. But if I were betting on this my money would be on Mantha making the team next season. Hope I'm wrong tho cause I'll take an unproven Mantha over Dan Cleary any day. frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 Sucks for the guy but I doubt he would have made the team. So let him get healthy and start in the AHL. hooon 1,089 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) While I love the Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco line, it would be awesome to see Jurco get some real top 6 time. He had a couple games with Datsyuk and they looked good together. I'm bummed about the Mantha injury and the blip in his development, but I also expected him to play mostly in GR to start the season. Additionally, I expect big things from Jurco this year, and would love to see him take the opportunity and run with it.
