Burkie going all out on truculence, it gives them a chance to McDavid and will make sure that Monahan, Johnny Hockey and Baertschi can focus on hockey plus the Flames fans will see a very entertaining product. Not a bad idea at all.

This team is going to kick some serious ass Bollig, McGrattan, Yonkman, Gillies, Ferland, Wolf ... god I wish Torts would still coach in Vancouver just to see his face when Hardley sends his "top 6" out

Well, Burke's model worked really well for Toronto................

And a chance to draft Eichel or McDavid

See, to me, you say that like it’s something to be proud of. Any team can take a crack at theses two if they are prepared to suck a whole ton of ass for a year.

Maybe I’m misreading your tone. If so I apologize.

I know some people wish the Wings would just tank and get some top 5 picks but I’d be more proud, as a fan, if this team was able to get back into contention without really breaking stride.

Nah that's not what I'm trying to say but I really understand what Burkie is trying to do here. He knows his team won't be even close to playoff contention so he goes out and brings in a bunch of tough guys not only for entertainment but also for protection (Gaudreau is heavily undersized and the rats would have taken advantage of him) but now there are some big SOBs looking over his shoulder :-)

. It's year two of their rebuild and let's be honest players like Eichel and McDavid aren't there every year so I can understand why teams want to get them.

Is tanking something to be proud of ? Of Course not -at least not for me- but the league is making it harder and harder for teams like the Wings to ice a great roster. And yeah personally I'd rather be a bottom 5 team than one that barely misses the playoffs and get's some midrange picks.

I agree completely rick zombo. I think many people would be thinking a little differently if we were to miss the playoffs a few year in a row and then had to wait another so many years before we were true cup contenders again. I'd much rather the Red Wings approach and tweak / rebuild on the fly. We've done it after Yzerman, Fedorov and co. with Zetterberg and Datsyuk. I believe we're a lot closer than some people realize to doing it once again with guys like Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Mantha, Athanasiou, Pulkkinen, Nosek and Frk. Obviously not all guys are going to make it, let alone have the same impact that the previous guys had but I do believe we have at least two from that list that will make a huge impact similar to Pav and Hank.

Tanking has proven not to work for various teams, so why do it? What Burke is doing in Calgary is a mockery of the league in my opinion. He's always been a fan of building tough, hard to play against teams, but c'mon man, that team is ridiculous. Do the guys like Monahan, Gaudreau, Baertschi, Granlund, Bennett all need two fighters to protect each of them? I don't think so... I don't think a team NEEDS any fighters on their roster (although I wouldn't mind having ONE) but does a team really need a dozen fighters?... M-o-c-k-e-r-y...

You're right. What Burke's doing does make sense. It's not what most GMs would do, but it's how he rolls. Fair enough.

You make it sound like these are the only two choices. This barely missing (or is that 'barely making?') the playoffs thing is new to the Wings. I feel like if they can hold ground over the next couple of seasons, we're going to see them slowly moving back into contention. I like to think that 5-7 years down the road when Detroit can contend for a cup again, that I'll look back on the years leading up to this more fondly than I would if they had to be Buffalo/Florida/Edmonton/Chicago/Pittsburgh bad in order to get there.

If they can pull of the rebuild-on-the-fly this time? That IMO will be Holland's legacy.

It depends on why you're just making it. If the team is healthy and it's a talent issue thenajor changes need to be made. If it's because of injuries to all your top forwards then you need to look at the training staff.
