For the second time, I realize that. Which is precisely why I'd need for him to prove it, this year, in training camp. Because it hasn't ever been true before. Even in the past, when the rule was "tie goes to the veteran", the ostensible rule was that in situations NOT TIED, the best player would play. But that wasn't the case either. So for all of posterity, I get it. Babs says the best player will play. Prove it.

Sorry, I didn't see the first explanation. Your original post reads a lot different than that so you should understand why you got responses.

Anyway, I agree with you. Babcock didn't follow his own statements last year - let's hope he does this year.

In practical terms the statment has bearing on these cases:

Cleary vs. Jurco: If Cleary outplays Jurco or Jurco doesn't look ready, then it's fine if Cleary gets chosen. But Jurco looks ready he should get chosen.

D prospects vs. Kindl/Lashoff.

Gustavsson vs. Mrazek. Here, I think the consideration of playing opportunity trumps Babcock's statement and, even if Mrazek outplays everybody, there's no way he's on the team.

Sorry the Babcock quote makes zero sense to me.... "Tie goes to the best player" well then it isn't a tie is it.

People comparing it to the "tie goes to the vet" quote. That was completely different, saying if two players are just as good the vet gets it is way different then if the better guy is better then the better guy plays. That's just common sense lol

Exactly. Nyquist wasn't "tied" with Cleary or Samuelsson or Bertuzzi coming out of training camp last year. Tatar sat out most of the first ten games too. Two of the Wings best players a season ago were victims of veteran priority.

I need to see it to actually believe it too. Jurco will be the real indicator because we all know already he's good enough to be on the team. If they send him down, it's same old Red Wings.

Good point. Maybe it was a revealing slip of the tongue, lol: when he has said tie he really meant decisions.

Every time I listen to Marchenko's interviews I just love the guy so much more. He is extremely honest and realistic and doesn't give softball answers. He is very good at assessing his own game and where he is at and what he needs to work on which is a great sign because not all players know what they should work on and actually go out and do it.

Stats from game 2: http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/boxscore.html?gameid=2527377

Weiss finishing with 0 points and a minus 2. :/

Then again, Abdelkader was scoring like 2 goals a game last camp, so I guess can't read TOO much into it yet.

Someone in the comments section in the link Dirtydangles posted noted that Weiss has looked really good out there so far, despite the stats. Edited by Echolalia

To add to that, Pav did not get any points today either. I guess we should bench him? I don't understand why some Red Wings fans need to be so negative all the time. I am more than willing to give Weiss another chance to prove himself. He is a heck of a player and lets see what he can do healthy this year before we dump him in freakin training camp!

@RedWingsFeed: Franzen dominated fitness testing: TRAVERSE CITY It was an amazing display of... http://t.co/gvc7H9Uf2A via @DetroitRedWings #RedWings

This isn't that surprising though considering when Mule pushes himself he is an absolute beast and can dominate any game. It just doesn't happen night in and night out.

Apparently Cleary has looked good so far?

Also this link has a bit of an overview of how certain players look, at least from one person's perspective;

Actually really glad to hear Cleary has looked good. The guy deserves a comeback year and it doesn't matter who it is, good hockey players make the wings better.

Completely agree. I love Dano and I know he's happy to be anywhere in the lineup. Some healthy competition helps everybody. If Nyquist was granted a spot in the lineup he may not have came out the way he did. We got a lot of guys that have something to prove. Whether it's weiss or even guys like Abby and helm who want to show they aren't just grinders. Everybody has to earn their spot
