Tomas Tatar and Pavel Datsyuk scored power-play goals Monday while goaltenders Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins during the final two periods as the Detroit Red Wings opened the preseason with a 2-1 victory at Consol Energy Center.

Datsyuk, who drew an assist on Tatar's goal, did not finish the game. He went to the dressing room under his own power late in the third period after taking a big hit from Rob Scuderi.

A Red Wings spokesman said Datsyuk had a shoulder injury and will be re-evaluated Tuesday.

Tatar connected midway through the first period to open the scoring and Datsyuk snapped a 1-1 tie with 3:55 left in the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.

Howard stopped all 18 shots he faced in the second period while finishing with 25 saves. Mrazek stopped all 10 shots he faced.

Pittsburgh scored its only goal when Beau Bennett tallied at 12:56 of the first period.

The Red Wings were 2-for-6 on the power play while their penalty killers blanked Pittsburgh during its four manpower advantages.

The Penguins outshot Detroit 36-27.

The Red Wings play their second preseason game Tuesday in Chicago.

Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive · 39m

Babcock said Datsyuk not skating today. Shoulder still being evaluated.

Still being evaluated? Can't be good. Ansar Khan also said that anyone who played last night wasn't going to play tonight, goes without saying though. So regardless if Datsyuk was healthy he wouldn't have played tonight.

Thankfully that shouldn't keep him out too long. Slap a cage on the helmet.

Update - Out at least one week

Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk said Tuesday he'll have an MRI on his injured shoulder this week and estimated he'll miss about a week, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Datsyuk left a 2-1 win Monday against the Pittsburgh Penguins during the third period after taking a hit from Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi. He headed for the dressing room under his own power.

Also Red Wings forward Darren Helm sustained a broken nose after taking a stick to the face during the game Monday, according to the Free Press. There was no immediate word on how much time, if any, Helm could miss.

Helm also needed stitches to his left cheek as a result of the high stick by Penguins forward Beau Bennett with 5:02 left in the first period. Bennett received a double minor for high sticking.

Helm and defenseman Ryan Sproul were among the Red Wings staying off the ice Tuesday, the Free Press reported. Sproul was checked from behind in the game Monday but continued to play.

good Interview with Dats

http://www.freep.com/videos/sports/nhl/red-wings/2014/09/23/16098121/

Dats: "I got hit in to the galsses.

Helene St.James: "How do you feel?"

Dats: "Better ask how glasses feel"

...

HSJ: "how do you think Darren Helm looks today?"

Dats: "He is ready for Halloween"

Least he is in good spirits.

Datsyuk is the very best of the best.

It's so nice that Holland upgraded the team in the offseason, so we as fans don't have to worry about minor injuries-such as this- derailing our season.

Replace Datsyuk with who exactly? Holland tried to sign FA and they didn't come, let's stop with the non sense about him not signing players that don't want to come to Detroit in the first place.

no player can replace what datsyuk provides

Well there are players that can, but I'm not talking about about them-- they would be too hard to get. There are however players that can substitute Pav for a week or two, while a minor injury heals.

You're taking my sarcastic comment too literally. Also note the fact that I said minor injury--which usually means a week, two at the most-- and there were players that could have helped if a minor injury had occurred.

Players not signing here has as much to do with the current roster as it has, to do with the terms and contracts Holland offered to the available players/ in his trade proposals. There would have to be detailed specifics of what Hollands actual offers were, before flat out saying a player didn't want to come play in Detroit.

I was making a joke, not starting another conversation on what Holloand did or didn't do, one thing we agree on is that it has been rehashed to death.
