Babcock "I don't think it will be my final year here"

With the job Shanny previously had? That was probably the only job in the league worse than an upper level management postion with the Leafs.

Also, you guys are all forgetting about Lebda.

Lol, when he joined the Leafs I told my dad he left the second most scrutinized job in hockey for the first most scrutinized job in hockey.

Helene St. James tweets,

Mike Babcock on his future with #RedWings: "I don't think it's going to be my final year here. If it is, it is."

Mike Babcock on his future with #RedWings: "My relationship with my general manager is such that the grass isn't greener on the other side."

What do you guys think, Do you wants babs to stay, or do you guys think we need a change and should make Blashill head coach next year?

Keep Babs in the D. It's difficult to find a coach who is as smart as Babcock. Last thing the Red Wings need is another Dave Lewis or worse.

I don't get the Dave Lewis bashing around here. You're hardly the first to do it either. He took the Wings to the playoffs and lost early. How is that any worse than what Babs' has been doing since 09? It could be worse guys. People make it seem like he had a losing record or something. He got fired because back then Holland's mantra was "we want to compete for the Cup every year". Now it's "we want to make the playoffs every year".

But you have to remember the roster Lewis had. He took basically the team that won the Stanley Cup the previous year and lost in the first round.

To Mike Babcock.

Comparing the players Lewis had to work with to what Babcock has been working with since 09 is not exactly apples to apples. It's not even fruit to fruit. Lewis underperformed given the roster he had. Great in the regular season and tanked in the playoffs. Ilitch had gone through enough of that in the mid 90s.

I'm not comparing the two coaches. Obviously Babs is a better coach. What I am saying is that people act like it's the end of the world to make the playoffs and lose early. If I've read once I've read a thousand times "we don't want Blashill to be another Dave Lewis", to which I assume they mean they don't Blashill to win his division, makes the playoffs, and lose to a Stanley Cup finalist in each of his first two years as head coach. I'd take it.

Did they expect him to win the Stanley Cup? How many rookie coaches in any major league sport do that?

But if I had to compare...as far as the roster, Lewis had the pretty much same roster in 03-04 as Babs had in 2005 and got the same results. His 03-04 roster was also significantly worse than anything Bowman had in 99, 00, 01 and he got the same results. He really only "tanked" in 02-03...as a rookie head coach in the NHL. Clearly he's not as accomplished as those guys but he wasn't as experienced as those guys either.

To be fair, the teams Lewis lost to in the playoffs (Anaheim & Calgary) both were playing great hockey and each ended up coming up 1 game shy of winning the Stanley Cup. In both instances the goalies (Giguere & Kiprusoff) were playing absolutely amazing hockey. Wasn't it game 1 vs Anaheim that we lost in OT, and Giguere has 60+ saves. I don't know if Lewis is necessarily to blame for that.

Ironically in Babcock's first year with the Wings, he to lost to a low seed team with a hot goalie, that lost in game 7 of the finals as well. Crazy that happened 3 seasons in a row.

Don't get me wrong, I think Babs is a much better coach then Lewis, but Lewis does get a raw deal around here. People love to pick a scapegoat.

Who the hell would ever want to leave Detroit to go to The Leafs anyway?

Seriously though.........

The funny thing is people think Babs will leave here because he is not happy with his roster, to go to a team that over the last 10 years have made the playoffs one time, and the knock on them is that they don't put forward a good roster.

I think Babs will stay. If he can take this completely different generation of stars and mold them into a cup win, that would cement his legacy as one of the greatest of all time.

Lewis probably does get a bit too much flack but expectations were extremely high, I agree with number9 though, I don't think Lewis was anything special.

And again, you have to consider the roster he had in 2003 versus what Babcock has had to work with the last few seasons.

Babcock is a good coach but he gets stubborn and tries to prove that he's the smartest guy in the room at times. Insisting on Glendening as the 4th center and Abdelkader on a top line , for example. It's probably time for him to move on.

As much as I like Babcock, and I do think he's a great coach, but I think atleast half dozen coaches would've won the Cup w/ that '08 team, and his Golds with those Canadian teams.

Holland hoarding his assets again with Babs and Blashy.

It's a tough call: The only way to ensure a smooth transition is to let Babcock go and send a moving truck down I-96 to pick up Blashill's things and bring 'em east.

If Babcock gets a 2 yr extension, then we risk losing Blashy ( his term will be up by then, too) and then what? The chances that one of the good coaches we'd like would actually be available is pretty darn slim.

Be cool, say five years from now, to have Blashill behind the bench, Yzerman calling the shots, Holland way up high in the office (doing lots of interviews) w/ Nosek, Larkin, Sheahan, Glenny down the middle, Mantha, Nyquist, Tatar, Pulks, Cleary, Jurco...our futures so bright, we gotta wear shades!

Lewis also got the reputation for taking it easy on the veterans and being too much of a friend as opposed to a coach. How true that is, I don't really know, but the greatest coach of all time didn't think Lewis should have gotten the job either.

I seem to remember a time either late in the season or the playoffs when Lewis was coaching where Yzerman disagreed with a decision Lewis had made and Yzerman made it clear that he disagreed in the middle of the game.

Am I making that up or does anyone else remember it?

So far this year, Glendening is proving you wrong. Why do you think Glendening can't be a 4th line center? He's very good defensively, is a good PKer. Is very good on faceoffs, can take assignments against top lines...and he hasn't even played a full year in the league.

Anyone who has bad things to say about Glendening can eat my jock strap.

The guy walked onto the U of M team and rose to captain. Went undrafted but immediately signed by GR. Impressed there, and was signed by the wings, where he immediately made an impact. The guy rises to every occasion, and despite little to no hype, has performed at every level. He is the definition of the type of guy I want on my team.

Amen brother.

And its still his second season.

He's still technically a project, and he's already a difference maker.
