Babcock "I don't think it will be my final year here"

Babs all cash in and getting a chance to choose from a lot of teams, where some are contenders. Also the guy wants a fair say in signing decisions if he doesn't get it here, super Mario is for sure going to provide that also. Personally I think he'll leave and by then the retool will turn into a rebuild (only one year too late for McEichel). People who don't like him will get their wish and he'll take home a few cups with the Pens or Blues

Has Babcock ever stated that this is an issue in Detroit? (if so please post a link) Or is this just speculation on your part?

Sure Holland and Babcock may have different opinions on things, but find a coach/GM that are on the same page with everything 100% of the time.

Everything I have ever heard Babcock say indicates he wants to be here (ie. the name of this thread). Babcock has never said anything to make any of us think otherwise and I believe that Babcock is a straight shooter. If he didn't want to be here, I think he would simply say "no comment" or "I will not talk about my contract" NOT "I dont think it will be my final year here".

“Well, that's a great question to have,” Babcock answered. “I don't have to answer that one, though. I just said I'd ask the other guy and then I'll support everything he's decided.”

“I got my two cents in, so I get one vote,” Babcock said. “He (Holland) gets two, so he can win, 2-1.""

I think a 1:1 vote + asking a third person (assistant GM, Blashill etc.) would be a good idea.

For sure Babs is going to say that as do players, because it drives the price up and doesn't leave much media room for endless speculations. Personally I fully expect him leaving, if he does stay I would be very surprised and happy, by far the best coach in the NHL.

Why would he walk if we win the cup?... I think if we get bounced early he may consider walking, if we have a deep run, he stays, if we win the cup, he stays. Personally, I don't think Babcock is going anywhere for at least another few seasons...

Just my gut feeling that he'd be looking for new challenges/opportunities. Just like Bowman did after his years in Montreal. Why not? You get to name your price, coach any player you want to, live in any part of the country you want to, and maybe set yourself up for a GM position somewhere down the line. Two Cups and the clout he's already got in the NHL and Babs can write his own contract almost anywhere in the league...anywhere except Detroit where he'll get the money but not the additional management decision making power.

Ken Holland is the most successful GM in the business. He's has (twice) managed to rebuild an aging team while keeping it competitive. His drafting and player development programs are unrivaled. And even his worst mistakes are hardly disasters (no David Clarkson contracts in Detroit).

Why exactly should anybody else have as much say in the management of the roster as he does? Should Ken Holland get to have some say in the coaching too or should that be left to the guy who's clearly shown that he's capable of doing it well?

I find myself falling into the same trap sometimes. I want to see a particular acquisition or roster move, and when it doesn't happen I get irritated with Ken Holland. But after seeing how good these kids are, how good the ones in Grand Rapids are, and how their growth and development coincides with the decline of the previous core, I'm just going to admit how wrong I am.

Ken Holland is the best in the business, and nobody (Not Babcock, Blashill, Ryan Martin, Jim Devellano, etc.) should tell him how to manage a roster. Ever.

Giving a coach equal decision making power is the worst thing an owner can do (your mario reference). If you are going to do that, just make the coach the GM as well. It would completely undermine the GM if he has to check with the coach first for all roster decisions. Think about it in real life Frank.....GM is on the phone about to make a trade, but cant pull the trigger because he has to check with Babcock first, then if Babcock disagrees, he has to call another person to choose between them. Horrible way to run a team.

Your quote just reinforced my point, Babcock doesn't agree with everything Holland does but it has never been a major issue/rift between them.

Yes. He could only win one here from 2006-10 when this team was great. But, of course, in your world he'll win at least THREE with another team.

This team was only great for 2 seasons under his tenure. 2007/08 and 2008/09. 2006-2007 they were building up to that cup winning team. After 2009 age started catching up to some guys, injuries to others. So they gradually made the roster younger and are building it back up again.

That's 2 seasons where Babs had a legit contender to coach. Won a cup in one, and f*** what happened in the second. Not to mention he got a young, inexperienced and injury riddled team into the playoffs the last 2 seasons.

A huge part of the reason the kids are playing so well is because of Babs. People need to realize that. The guy is an absolute pro. Never throws his players under the bus, never whines about refs, and he brings out the best in his players. He also commands respect from his players. Invaluable qualities.

Now you're just nitpicking.

If you reread what I said you know that I'm just pointing out how typically overzealous it is to assume Babcock's going to throw off the kryptonite shackles of this two-bit organization and run into the brawny arms of a real franchise like Pittsburgh and (more laughably) St Louis, and win a "few" goddamn cups leaving this crippled Wings organization and fan-base to drown in a pool of their own ungrateful tears and beg for Babcock to return.

Ain't gonna happen.

I love our coach. I really do. And, for the record, I want him to stay. But this team has won post-Bowman and they'll win post-Babcock.

edit: Oh yeah, the 2005-06 team won the presidents trophy under Babcock then blew it vs Edmonton first round. To me that's a great team that couldn't get it done in the playoffs.

To be fair the 2005-2006 team has been blowing it in playoffs every year since 2002.

When Bowman retired, we had a series of great teams and early exit stinkers year after year. It is when we finally got Babs things started to turn things back around for the better. We got lucky. The best coach in the business wanted to come here. Lets just hope he wants to stay. Because once he leaves, there isn't another Babcock to take his place.

True this.

Babcock doesn't get all the credit though. Holland adjusted to the post-cap world more quickly and efficiently than most teams, signed Rafalski, and started to reap the rewards of shrewd drafting (Zetterberg, and Datsyuk).

Actually, who are we kidding. It was all Lidstrom.

Lol yeah, tell me about it. I still can't believe it. My brother-in-law is really good buddies with Ryane and I've hung out / went golfing with him several times, and I've even been over to his father's house. Tony always seemed like a good guy, and didn't really seem like the type, but I guess most don't. He was very well off, with a huge home, nice vehicles, and all the toys. I guess I assumed a lot of that money came from Ryane, but I guess not...

Babs clearly is enjoying his time in Detroit. Says it's the best wings team since '09

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2014/12/mike_babcock_this_is_best_red.html

I completely agree!

Its funny how people were posting just a few months ago how this team was headed down the toilet. I think in this very thread people went off on how Holland ruined this team and Babcock couldn't wait to get out.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/11/report-babcock-and-red-wings-close-to-a-long-term-deal/

The Windsor star (not sure how reliable of a source they are?) is reporting that babs is close to signing long term in Detroit, in a deal that would make him the highest paid coach in the league. Babcock previously said he wouldn't negotiate during the season so maybe take that with a grain of salt but, I wouldn't be surprised; especially with how well they're doing lately.

He watched the Leafs play the Wings last night and said f*** that, I'm not coaching those losers.
