Also the guy wants a fair say in signing decisions if he doesn't get it here, super Mario is for sure going to provide that also. Personally I think he'll leave and by then the retool will turn into a rebuild (only one year too late for McEichel). People who don't like him will get their wish and he'll take home a few cups with the Pens or Blues Has Babcock ever stated that this is an issue in Detroit? I think if we get bounced early he may consider walking, if we have a deep run, he stays, if we win the cup, he stays. Personally, I don't think Babcock is going anywhere for at least another few seasons... Just my gut feeling that he'd be looking for new challenges/opportunities. Just like Bowman did after his years in Montreal. Why not? You get to name your price, coach any player you want to, live in any part of the country you want to, and maybe set yourself up for a GM position somewhere down the line. Two Cups and the clout he's already got in the NHL and Babs can write his own contract almost anywhere in the league...anywhere except Detroit where he'll get the money but not the additional management decision making power. He's has (twice) managed to rebuild an aging team while keeping it competitive. His drafting and player development programs are unrivaled. And even his worst mistakes are hardly disasters (no David Clarkson contracts in Detroit). Why exactly should anybody else have as much say in the management of the roster as he does? Should Ken Holland get to have some say in the coaching too or should that be left to the guy who's clearly shown that he's capable of doing it well? I find myself falling into the same trap sometimes. I want to see a particular acquisition or roster move, and when it doesn't happen I get irritated with Ken Holland. But after seeing how good these kids are, how good the ones in Grand Rapids are, and how their growth and development coincides with the decline of the previous core, I'm just going to admit how wrong I am. Ken Holland is the best in the business, and nobody (Not Babcock, Blashill, Ryan Martin, Jim Devellano, etc.) should tell him how to manage a roster. Giving a coach equal decision making power is the worst thing an owner can do (your mario reference). If you are going to do that, just make the coach the GM as well. It would completely undermine the GM if he has to check with the coach first for all roster decisions. Think about it in real life Frank.....GM is on the phone about to make a trade, but cant pull the trigger because he has to check with Babcock first, then if Babcock disagrees, he has to call another person to choose between them. Horrible way to run a team. This team was only great for 2 seasons under his tenure. 2007/08 and 2008/09. 2006-2007 they were building up to that cup winning team. After 2009 age started catching up to some guys, injuries to others. So they gradually made the roster younger and are building it back up again. That's 2 seasons where Babs had a legit contender to coach. Won a cup in one, and f*** what happened in the second. Not to mention he got a young, inexperienced and injury riddled team into the playoffs the last 2 seasons. A huge part of the reason the kids are playing so well is because of Babs. People need to realize that. The guy is an absolute pro. Never throws his players under the bus, never whines about refs, and he brings out the best in his players. Holland adjusted to the post-cap world more quickly and efficiently than most teams, signed Rafalski, and started to reap the rewards of shrewd drafting (Zetterberg, and Datsyuk). My brother-in-law is really good buddies with Ryane and I've hung out / went golfing with him several times, and I've even been over to his father's house. Tony always seemed like a good guy, and didn't really seem like the type, but I guess most don't. He was very well off, with a huge home, nice vehicles, and all the toys.
