yztheman 29 Report post Posted October 1, 2014 Didn't see this mentioned in the game thread, and don't have a link, however I did see the interview between periods of the Maple Leafs game. Mick asked a few questions, can't remember them specifically, but the big one I do remember is Holland telling Mickey that "he is expecting to make a trade by the end of the first half of the season". They followed up with some clips of ferraro and callahan, not sure if they were implying those two. Anyone else see the interview? Can't remember if Holland was referencing a RH Dman. What are your thoughts?
kipwinger 8,440 Report post Posted October 1, 2014 I'll believe it when I see it. Holland's been saying that for about 5 years now. Once the trade deadline passes then he'll start telling everyone how's he's going to be a big player in free agency. Ho hum. 5 Detroit \# 1 Fan, Lazerbeam, gcom007 and 2 others reacted to this

dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 We ARE in a great position to move quantity for quality. We have 5 NHL dmen in GR 2-3 of which could crack the lineup. Not to mention we have a plethora of F prospects too. I think we need to look at our Dmen and think who we want here long term: Kronner (for the next 5 years probably) Dekeyser (long term spot) Smith (maybe long term if he keeps it up) Ericsson (could be worth moving while he still has value - he doesn't produce much and is getting injury prone) Quincey (not going to be around much longer) Kindl (good as gone) Lashoff (not long term) Sproul Ouellet Backman Marchenko Jensen I bolded the names I think could have a future with the Wings long term. As you can see we STILL have a surplus of dmen so we have to think about moving some pieces for a legitimate upgrade (top pairing dman). I'm thinking we trade multiple Dmen plus other assets to a team with little depth on the back end but a good piece on the top pair. If we could move E and one of the kid dmen in a bigger package for a top pairing dman we would look so much stronger. Then subtract Q, Kindl, Lash and you have a blue line with a solid future. Next season: Kronner - Top 2 dman Dekeyser - Smith Kid - Kid Kid
Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) I think we'll make a trade for Boychuk before the season starts. gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) While I'm mostly in agreement with all those rolling their eyes, there's a part of me that wouldn't be shocked if this ended up coming true. We're at a point where it's pretty obvious that we have too many holes that can't all be addressed by drafting, and we have a surplus of talent in certain areas. And reasonable or not, I think it's pretty clear that we need some sort of a jolt to the system to try and get this team back on free agent's road maps if we ever hope to be able to even overpay for half-way descent NHL talent any summer soon. A big trade could be that jolt, especially if it works out, but that could be a big if... Again, I wouldn't be shocked if Holland made a move, especially if he's looking to do it sooner rather than waiting for the trade deadline. And you know, it might be for the best, but it'll be ugly around here no doubt, as if we bring in anyone even remotely noteworthy, we're going to be overpaying. Might as well accept that now. But our core is still stronger than it seems and the right guy could really help bring some energy to the squad or help balance out the defensive pairings which would go a long ways, and if we're looking like a stronger team heading into the trade deadline than we have recently, we'll have a much better chance of landing on player's short lists than we've had for awhile, and that too is no small thing, especially if we're aiming to sign what otherwise would be a rental. Our chances would no doubt be better with a rental than it would be trying to land the same player on the open market if we get them in, have a good run, he forms some bonds with players, and perhaps see that the city isn't all so bad. At some point, something's gotta give. Too many years of missing out on guys, too many bad signings, too many holes, too many guys have moved on, and two more big ones will be moving on before too long. Even if we only land a stable 3/4 defenseman with a right handed shot, it's going to make the defense and subsequently this team's chances of winning any given night a lot better overall, and that's a damn good start. The longer Holland goes without making a serious move to improve this team and address some real holes, the weaker he and the team looks from the outside, and that's just not good business. Again, it'll likely be a bit ugly on our end, and that could come back to bite us down the stretch, but he's got to do something at some point to try to improve this team from the outside. It's inevitable, even for Holland. Edited October 2, 2014 by gcom007
kliq 3,755 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) I'm all for a big move, but only if its the right move. There is nothing worse in sports then when a GM makes a move just to make a move. I remember when Philly was looking for a top d man and traded JVR for Luke Schenn. I was baffled by the move at the time from Philly's side of things. Horrible trade for the Flyers. Long story short, I would rather Holland do nothing, then trade one our young studs for a middle of the road d-man or an average big winger. At least with the Cleary and Quincey arguable bad moves, it really doesn't hurt us long term and with Cleary he was keeping his word, which I commend. (He know the crap storm he was getting into making that move and did it anyways). With Quincey, I admit I don't like that move for the price/term given, but doesn't really hurt us to bad. But to get back to my point, when it comes to a trade, your not just acquiring a potential dud, your also losing something of potential huge value. As much as some want to believe it, teams aren't offering guys like Booby Ryan for Andersson, Glendenning and Kindl. I'm also sick of people saying we cant land free agents, do people already forget about Weiss and Alfie? Regardless of the outcomes, they were top UFA's 15months ago, and we got them. Losing out on Boyle (wanted to play with St. Louis), Erhoff (lost out on to an elite team), Nitkansen (Wsh offered more $$ and he had ties), and Sutter (wanted to be closer to his family) does not make us a place nobody wants to go. If we were a place nobody wanted to play, we would be losing players. There is a reason the majority of our guys want to finish their careers here, and will do it taking a pay cut, Holland/the Wings organization treats its players well. WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 My only comment on this topic: If a trade did come, it's not gonna be Callahan and/or Ferraro. Every GM with even a shred of logic would realize those two guys are going be available for free once they are placed on the waiver wire come the end of preseason. Yes, priority is first given to the worse teams for selecting players off waivers but I do not see much of a race amongst GMs to sign one of those two, especially this early in the season when every team is against the cap or their own budget and set with their roster. Kronwall - Smith DeKeyser - Boychuk Ericsson - Quincey Kindl I was thinking this for a little while too.... until smith and krug signed pretty cap friendly deals with the bruins. They are currently under the cap with both key RFAs signed. They do however have a busy off season ahead of them. After this season.... kliq 3,755 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) According to capgeek they are 3.6 million over the cap, Boychuk's exact caphit... Is that including Marc Savard? I think once the season starts, a large portion of that goes against LTIR. I'm not 100% sure how that works. Same things with Philly/Pronger. ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Is that including Marc Savard? I think once the season starts, a large portion of that goes against LTIR. I'm not 100% sure how that works. Same things with Philly/Pronger. Yes, that does include Savard whose cap hit will come off on the final day of pre-season. Once that happens, Boston is $393k under the cap but only have 12 forwards on the roster & 8 d-men. They can't just sign a 13th forward for that $393k given that the minimum salary is $550k this season so odds are high that Boychuck will be dealt & the Bruins will bring 2 more forwards on board. krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) Teams don't need to have 23 players split up 14 forwards, 7 defensemen, 2 goalies, that is just what most teams tend to do. The only stipulation as far as I know is that you cannot go above the 23 man limit. So Boston are fine once they put Marc Savard on LTIR. They may then opt to demote Kevan Miller and promote a forward. Either way they do not have to trade a defenseman, and it is very unlikely they will look to trade one of their better defensemen. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 You are correct, but it would be very tough to operate with just 12 forwards.

Yeah, they would be "fine" from a salary cap standpoint but that would still leave their roster in a mess. Savard on LTIR & waiving Miller give them 2 roster spots to fill and only $1.193m to do it. Based on what they have in their pipeline, they either: Recall a combo of their 3rd or 5th best left wing prospect, 5th best right wing prospect, 3rd best center prospect, or career AHLers to round out the roster to 23. FYI none of the prospects whose salary combos fit their remaining cap space at that point are rated in their top 10 overall or are predicted to pan out in the NHL. Sign a couple of FAs at or near league minimum. Jordan Tootoo, say hi to Boston maybe? Bring Villie Leino back too? Sign 2 of their currently unsigned prospects & slap them on the NHL roster. Recall one their prospects closer to making the jump which they can only afford one of & spend the year with only 22 players on the big club when the team is healthy. So can they survive without trading off one of their extra d-men? Probably but those other choices look like they are "scraping by" measures & personally I think that Chiarelli would want to do more than just scrape when it comes to the roster. All signs point to them trading off a d-man & Boychuk does seem to be the logical choice.

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 toby91_ca - That's why I said they would more than likely send down one of their 8 defensemen (Miller) and then call up a forward to go with 13 and 7, hell they would probably be able to call up two forwards if they were making league minimum to go with the standard 14 and 7... ogreslayer - I don't see anything wrong with those options. In reality that's what Lashoff is our number 7 for, to fill up the roster and play a game in a pinch (eg. if a player gets injured or ill on game day and there is no time to call someone up from Grand Rapids. If we didn't have Lash, I think we would probably sign a cheap vet to fill that role instead of placing one of our prospects in the 7 slot. Boston wouldn't want any of their top prospects sitting as their number 13/14 forwards, they would prefer them to play big minutes down in Providence. So yes, it would be smart to send down a guy like MIller and either call up a mid level prospect or sign a vet at league minimum...
