Why does anybody care about Don Cherry's thoughts on hockey. He wasn't a successful player, and he wasn't a successful coach. He's not Scotty Bowman or Pat Quinn; he's John Tortorella without the accomplishments. Why would anybody listen to this blowhard clown and think, "now here's a subject matter expert"? Ugh, I frickin' hate Don Cherry. He speaks for a certain generation. When I watch leafs games with my father-in-law (he is 55 and a HUGE Leafs fan) when Don Cherry comes on the whole house has to be quiet. Personally I think the guy is very outdated with his way of thinking, but he does make good points every once in a while. Ugh, I frickin' hate Don Cherry. He's a personality. I never ever agreed with him on a general level. There was a time when he'd occasionally have an endearing moment but mostly I just found him entertaining. These days, he can't even speak properly and rants and babbles like Abe Simpson. His points of view got him exactly one NHL game as a player, and one trip to the finals as a coach. Because we don't need a stay at home defenseman with Ericsson and Dekeyser in the lineup? Because he's not a puckmover or powerplay specialist? Because there's no reason to take a flier on a young kid with upside when we've got an organization full of young kids with upside? He clearly has one due to his popularity. My response was he speaks for a generation. He says crap, that alot of old school Canadian hockey fans feel. I am not one of them, and I am not saying the guy is some type of living legend, great player, or great coach, I'm just telling you what I think his appeal is.Someone else said it best, he's a personality. He's not some generic guy in a suit, telling you what 4 other broadcasters are telling you. Watch the Don Cherry documentary from CBC, from that you can see why he was/is popular. Is that really saying much, though? As for Schenn, I won't be mean... but no. Just no. The points made about him chasing after hits and not taking care of things in the defensive zone are bang on. He may have been poised to be a top 4, defensive showdown guy at one point, but he's been mishandled and it's hurt his development. At this point, Detroit has enough of their own players developing that they need to worry about. Luke Schenn would be another project, but coming at a high price in both assets given up and cap hit. I'll be honest about having little knowledge of the Dmen we have have in GR, but how many will we see as regulars at the NHL level? From what we've seen since Lids retired - we can never have too many Dmen who are capable in their own end, and are capable of blocking shots/clearing the crease. You're creating a little bit of a false dichotomy here. That he may or may not be better than Quincey is still not a reason to acquire him. "Better than Quincey-ness" isn't a good way to evaluate whether a player would help you much. Where's he going to play (3rd pair at 3.3 million)? What is his skill set (he's a less effective puck mover than Quincey)? Also, I see no reason to believe that Philly would trade a marginal defenseman for a more expensive marginal defenseman. It seems like you're saying that in a vacuum you'd rather have Schenn than Quincey, which I suppose isn't too unreasonable. But that wouldn't address any of the problems with our back end, since the problem is that we can't move the puck, so why bother?
