Anthony mantha - what are the chances he plays this year?

I'm asking this because a friend of mine asked me for advice for his hockey pool and I saw his roster and he had steve ott last year and I told him instead of taking a guy like steve ott who gets you 20-30 pts maybe chance it and take mantha with your last pick this year

So I'm asking does he play this year ? And if so how many games does he play? I'm thinking if he lights it up in the ahl when he returns maybe he'll get a chance here in January and play in the top 6?

wouldnt pulks get called up before mantha?

why would he? he clearly wasn't nhl ready in the preseason games he played. Holland has continuously said how he wants mantha to steal a top 6 spot. So I think realistically if Mantha is lighting up the AHL come injury time, he will definitrly befirst or second forward called up, I would bet first though.

It is going to take a few injuries... so yeah, he'll play at some point.

But more importantly for him he needs to make sure he's back to 100% physically and needs to get in plenty of games in GR. I fully expect him to shred up the AHL so I imagine he will definitely get his chance.

As far as drafting him for a fantasy team... not a chance. Better wait til he actually gets called up and then pick him on waivers if you really believe he can outscore someone else you've already drafted.

If it's a keeper league it might be worth picking him up for the potential long-term investment, but if we're talking just for this year I don't think it is worth it. It's going to be a bit before he even plays in the AHL due to his injury, and IF he thrives in the AHL and IF there are enough injuries to bring the kid up, and IF he continues to thrive in the NHL such that Mike "the tie goes to the veteran" Babcock is willing to keep him in the lineup, then it might be worth having him. But even then, there's so much more to fantasy points than scoring. Will he be putting up assists? +/-? PIM? Shots? I think there's plenty of average/slightly above average players that are already playing in the NHL with a proven track record that would be better bets.

That's why I was thinking with the last pick for his draft could be a steal , i don't know how these things work but if he could pick him up on waivers someone else can as well correct? And it goes by Order so he might not even get it

Ya it's a keeper league that's why i told him it could be worth it if he somehow continues to score at will, then maybe he can keep him as a player depending how he does ... He's taking over someone's team from last year who had a weak roster and is keeping Subban and the other guy is between kunitz pavelski and okposo

I said okposo cause he's with Tavares and I'm not sold on kunitz and I don't know if pavelski will continue to be a pt a game player ... He's leaning towards kunitz

I'm thinking if he continues to score ( he should return sometime in November?) then maybe he can in detroit sometime in January? Especially if detroit continues to struggle scoring goals

To me, it isnt worth taking him in a fantasy pool .

Even with the slim chance he plays say 30-40 games this season, which is probably the best case scenario;

How many points do you realistically think he'll get in that many games? Anywhere between 5-15.

Theres really too many variables for it to pay off.

It's interesting to see how Nestrasil has now suddenly stepped into the limelight. He was a disappointing prospect up until a week ago. I think Mantha has longer to go than most think.

Nestrasil finished the season strong and kept it going ... He was the one I was worried about being claimed off waivers and I'm glad the wings decided to give him a shot

I'll be shocked if he makes the team now (this season that is). It's one thing to play in the preaseason and slowly get used to the NHL level, and try to earn a spot. But I highly doubt (especially the way Kenny is) that Mantha will go from injured and not skating for weeks, straight into the NHL regular season. On any team odds would be Mantha doesn't make the team this year. On the Red Wings, it's a 100% certainty. Although It wouldn't surprise me at all if the injuries start to pile up, in which case I guess anything is possible. But if I were betting on this my money would be on Mantha making the team next season. Hope I'm wrong tho cause I'll take an unproven Mantha over Dan Cleary any day.
