Datsyuk to play Thursday? Weiss to be a healthy scratch?

it would save $925k against the cap, and give them a pissed off player who is signed for 3 more years. Babcock just needs to bite the bullet and do what it takes to get him going.

Agreed. I think we are just going to have to deal with a lull from him. I think he should be playing with Z and Nyquist on his wings. If that doesn't spark his confidence quick nothing will.

I thought Weiss looked fine in the preseason. Or, at least no worse than 90% of the rest of the team. I feel like Nestrasil, Ouellet, and Tatar were the only ones that were doing any scoring so I can't really single Weiss out. Get him some finishers and he'll be just fine.

demoting Weiss well cause major problems if you think he is sandbagging now nothing gets a player more pissed off than that his a 2nd line winger being scratched? yea not a good idea you signed him to that contract now use him he will improve but give him a chance I still like the possibility of Goose Weiss Franzen

Weiss has a NTC. So unless he waives it, he's not going anywhere.

If he's always scratched here I think he'd waive it , question is who would have him?it would have to be a team that can't attract free agents I'd have to Guess

Or Babcock could break his legs and send him on longterm injury ?

i dont see why he wouldnt waive it, babs wont give him decent line mates.

Even if he does, who wants an injury prone player who has not played in 2+ years and is on a 4x5 contract...nobody thats who. Hope and pray Weiss improves, because he will be a Red Wing for the next 4 years.

Seriously? The guy isn't even getting a chance to prove himself. You're basically trying to throw it in peoples faces that you were right about Weiss like it's a good thing to be right about.

I'm just sick of people saying being a realist is a Debbie downer. A realist is someone who forms their opinions based on facts but yet were Debbie downers because we don't drink the kool aid of hopes and dreams.

Sorry but that's a load of bs. The guy spent the entire year last season playing hurt or on the shelf. Now, because he's not been lighting it up in the preseason, despite the fact that he's the healthiest he's been in two seasons, you feel the need to can him just to boost your own ego?

Give me a break.

Helm and Kindl, packaged together, wouldn't get you much. But they'd probably get you Alexander Semin. Just sayin'.

Then again, Semin's got too obvious a skill set. Babcock would invariably make him the fourth line goalie or something.

Helm's speed and versatility is indefinitely more valuable than Semin.

Funniest post of the year with a baseless argument. Weiss sucks because the facts are he scored 60 points multiple times. Oh and he's only a 0.60 PPG player..

Perhaps when he's playing.

Ya it's a damn good thing he scored 60 points for us last year. O wait...

Where did I say anything about canning him? Please use your brain seriously. Nothing like putting words in someone's mouth.

Good thing z and d only scored 40 points for us. We should trade them too along with franzen, Jurco and Tatar.

Writing a guy off without barely playing is the smart thing to do especially when he's a proven player. Good job.

Isn't the thread about Weiss starting the season as a healthy scratch? How is that not 'writing a guy off without barely playing'?

Weiss has a NMC (according to capgeek), so an AHL assignment (or even waivers) is likely out of the question. He also has a modified NTC, but maybe he could be moved. Teams are going to look at the fact that he hasn't been healthy for two seasons, though, and his contract is structured such that he makes $6M a year in real salary the next two years. It's not an easy sell. At the end of the day, if a $5M/yr player is a healthy scratch - management is going to have some roster problems. He's paid to be in the lineup when he's not injured. He's not going to 'gain confidence', 'learn the system', 'develop chemistry' or lots of other things sitting in the press box.

Weiss will be playing this week and as long as he is put with a couple decent linemates he will produce. He will be fine.

I don't think Datsyuk will be playing the first few games, but once he gets back he will be back to his same old magic.

Side note: Am I the only one who tries to picture what some people look and act like outside of this site? I have a lot of people pegged, whether I'm right or not, I'll probably never know... Either way, it entertains me to see some people act so childish on here, I can only assume that some of them are still children, but you never know...

Doesn't mean it's going to happen. Babcock is bipolar like most on this site, he will change his mind.

Most here would rather see Abby play over Weiss in the top 6 when he has no business being there. But hey I told you so

Helm's speed and versatility is indefinitely more valuable than Semin.

There are a lot of things that make Helm a better option for some teams than Semin, but it's funny that you picked out speed and versatility. Semin is versatile and really fast too.

Semin's got as many facets to his game as Helm. They're just different ones. Helm's fast, defensively responsible, and good on PK. Semin's bigger, also very fast, excellent offensively, dangerous on the PP, and is a righty.

oh, and he's actually pretty good defensively too. Per fancy stats...

But again, I was really only screwing around. That ship sailed a long time ago.

I wasn't happy lol ... I don't think people should hope for weiss to fail but be prepared incase he does . He hit 60 pt plateau twice playing on on a Florida team where he got top line minutes and ppl time and nothing was ever expected of him

Prior to coming here he had 4 pts in 17 games with Florida and last year he had 4 in 26 here (injury or not)

Now Babcock isn't even suiting him up , you don't think if weiss was doing so good in pre season and practice Babcock wouldn't put him in the top 2 lines ?especially with datsyuk out?

I hope weiss wakes up and gets us a 60 pt season cause we really need it , I'm just not expecting it

The problem hasn't been Weiss in my opinion, I think he has looked great out there, he just hasn't been producing. And really, how can you expect him to put up points with the linemates he was put with? I bet any of our players, including Zetterberg and Datsyuk would struggle to put up many points in preseason games with any combination of Glendening, Miller, Cleary, Andersson, Nestrasil, Nosek... The fact that he hasn't had any significant time with any of our top players is mind boggling. There has to be something else to it that us fans haven't seen, something going on in practice or behind closed doors...

Tatar was a healthy scratch for numerous games at the beginning of last season and look how he turned out.

Don't judge Weiss until he has played healthy for the Wings. He may succeed; he may fail. But it's too early to tell and speculating about Babcock's preseason mind games with any player is futile.

Weiss has looked better than last year, that's for sure, but his timing is still quite off. I'm still willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, because he's played like 40 games (while injured) spread out over the last couple years, and now he's playing in a new system that he never had the chance to properly mesh into last year. Even being healthy, its going to take some time before all the rust is knocked off and he's on the same wavelength as everyone else. Until then, I expect he will be working sheltered minutes on the third line, where a mistake is less likely to be costly than against top 6 talent. I also expect that its probably going to be more than a few weeks before hes back up to speed.
