dragonballgtz 273 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) Good thing Cleary was given that pity contract, eh fellas? I thank Cleary for everything he did in the past, but I hope someone is giving him a guilt trip for playing the sad card with the Wings last year. Hurry up let him have his 10 games then waive his ass. Once that is done our roster can move one more step forward in icing the best team. Internet.Unknown 422 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 Wow that we had learned , can't believe ouellet was sent down .... It's gonna be ugly in detroit in 2 years when they decide to put 3-4 rookie defensemen in the back all at the same time At least nestrasil is getting a good shot onto the 3rd line , looking forward to watching him play Won't happen. You're dreaming.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 I know people are mad that XO isn't on the team, but if he did make the final cut wouldn't that mean that either Jurco would be sent down or Nestrasil would be exposed to waivers? I can guarantee that if Jurco had started in GR so that XO could be in the lineup all the same folks would be complaining and calling for Holland/Babs' heads. Eh, I could be in the minority here, but I think this team's forwards are a strong point. The biggest need in my eyes is on the back end, having guys who can play big minutes and get the puck up ice. Nestrasil had a heck of a camp, but if it means getting Ouellet up here permanently, I'd risk him on waivers. While it might not be popular, I'd even take him here over Jurco - I really think they need to bolster the blueline more than anything else. As it stands, I'm happy Jurco is here, and I'm happy for Nestrasil... but a Datsyuk return and Alfredsson signing could change that. They need to shed a combination of Andersson and Kindl/Lashoff, difficult as it may be. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

I'm not sure why you think that Ouellet being on the team would have any affect on either of those forwards. It wouldn't. If Quellet had stayed up then KH would have had to waive one defenseman. Likely, it would have been Kindl or Lashoff. But in lieu of Babs' strange "Kindl and Lash are safe" comments and "we're not looking for bottom pair help, we're looking for top four help" comments, I'm starting to wonder if the organization didn't see Ouellet as competing with Smith and/or Quincey and not Kindl and Lashoff. Maybe the reason Quellet was sent down was because KH was reluctant to cut Smith or Quincey, and not Lash and Kindl as we're all assuming. Edit: I know technically he could go with 8 defenders. But since he hasn't reliably done so since becoming the GM I'm assuming he'd have waived one and kept 14 forwards. I was just speculating about the waiver exempt guys, and Hollands tendencies as a GM. While its not what I would do if I were a GM, Holland has a tendency to send down waiver exempt guys (even if they are beyond ready for the NHL) over waiving guys who are signed. Yes waiving Kindl or Lashoff makes sense to you and me, but that doesn't mean it is what Holland would do. Nyquist and Tatar are pretty good examples of this. Or in this case XO. Yes he is ready, yes he is better than Lashoff and Kindl. But he is waiver exempt, and that's how Holland operates. Luckily, as you mentioned, it seems Jurco's spot is pretty safe at the moment. In any event, the sky isn't falling. Its pretty safe to assume XO will get his shot this year, and if he doesn't get it this year, hopefully that means Kindl has regained his form somewhat. Fred_Bear 8 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 I'm not surprised at all. Holland hit the easy button. When Dats is ready, Jurco will go to GR. This pushes the real decision making into the season. I think that's where the fun begins. I'm hoping for at least a couple of trades to open up some roster slots. I don't think there are any 'easy' trades, but I hope Holland has a better appreciation of which youngsters are developing where they need to be and who is truly expendable. I'm also already interested to see how the roster develops towards next season. Cleary's the only projected UFA (pray to god he's gone) along with Gustavson, so we still need some permanent slots to bring up Jurco, Ouellet and Mantha and any other potential developments. Holland should have a challenging year a big opportunity to show why he got his extension!

wings4thecup06 504 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 Sounds like Babcock really did want XO in the lineup. If you look at how Babcock had the pairings at practice it's pretty clear what he thought the pecking order should be. It's also more proof he and Holland don't exactly see eye to eye on the roster. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2014/10/red_wings_assign_defenseman_xa.html Hmm, I don't see it quite that way. I think they probably did want him on the roster, but seriously, do we really think there are any real suitors for Kindl and his contract that really, is a massive road block for most teams. Sure you could send Lash down to GR, but really he's actually a serviceable number 7. Kindl is the one to move, waiving him and sending him to GR just eats up the ice time down there of Sproul/Marchenko/Jensen/Backman etc. As annoyed as I am the XO isn't on the roster, I guess I can see why kindl is immoveable right now. Which frankly, sucks.

PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) According to Babs Holland not "we" [babcock and him] made the decision but whatever. You really need a quote for a claim like that. Besides, "We" is Holland, Ryan Martin, Jim Devellano, Babcock, and probably Draper and maybe Chelios. We don't really the dynamics of how the group makes decisions. I don't really know why everyone is so surprised. Ouellet deserves to play over Kindl, but Kindl has a pretty big contract and we need to trade him if we want XO to replace him. If we sent Kindl down, he's a 1.475 against the cap for the next 3 years because nobody is going to trade for him if he can't even make the roster. Let him play a bit at the at the beginning of the year and hopefully either he goes back to 12-13 form or we find a trading partner. Only other option was send Lashoff down and he's just fine as our #7. Edited October 7, 2014 by PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

themcityblues 249 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) Kenny is kind of irritating in two senses. First, his GM decisions are questionable. Second he has far too much say in the daily operations of the team. I get the sense he's controlling these lines/players quite a bit over Babcock's head. Nestrasil has upside ..... Guys who should/will be on the outs are kindl lashoff and cleary Andersson miller weiss Andersson maybe should not go. Miller definitely should not go. Why you think Miller should go is beyond me. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 Weak. Holland just took the easy way out again. New season, same frustrating rhetoric. As people have already mentioned, the roster is not set in stone. If the rumors are true, it sounds like Holland is trying to free up a spot for XO by moving Kindl. On a side note, XO is one of the cooler, easier to type nicknames I've seen in a while. And Nestrasil sounds like something you put on acne. "I used to get breakouts all the time in high school. Then I started using Nestrasil!" 7 Wheelchairsuperhero, number9, Fred_Bear and 4 others reacted to this

Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted October 7, 2014 Where were those comments? Brian Lashoff won't be the odd-man out, however. His job is safe. "Lash isn't in any trouble," coach Mike Babcock said before Saturday's preseason game against the Boston Bruins at Joe Louis Arena. "Lash trained like crazy," Babcock said. "Lash is smart. Lash does a good job penalty killing. Lash is what he is. He's a stay-at-home defenseman whose job is to play a safe, simple game; limit mistakes and get the puck to a forward as quick as possible. Lashoff probably will start the season as the Red Wings' seventh defenseman. "There's a spot on the team for everybody, and everyone just assumes that when a new guy comes he's taking over for one of the guys on the fourth line (or bottom defense pairing)," Babcock said. "No. You do what you do. We're looking for guys who can move the puck. So it isn't necessarily that they (defense prospects) are slotting in this role." Babcock said the same applies to Jakub Kindl, meaning don't expect him to be replaced by a young defenseman. "We're in the market for a top-four D," Babcock said. "We're dying to give it to somebody. There's lots of minutes for you." If a young defenseman isn't replacing Lashoff or Kindl, then he's probably starting the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, because he's not replacing Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Danny DeKeyser, Kyle Quincey or Brendan Smith.
