Devils Sign Tootoo

Jordin Tootoo said Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows made “classless personal remarks regarding my family” while they were both in the box during the first period, provoking a second period attack. Tootoo left the bench and went after Burrows while players were lining up for a face-off. Canucks teammate Derek Dorsett intervened on Burrows’ behalf. Tootoo wouldn’t relay to reporters exactly what was said, but his battle with alcohol and his brother’s suicide are well-documented. Undoubtedly, the NHL is looking at whether Tootoo deserves any supplemental discipline for starting an altercation during a stoppage - beyond the 10-minute misconduct he received. Tough to put yourself in Tootoo’s situation in this case. In the NHL, there is a code for trash talk. It reminds me of something a player once said about on-ice chirping: “Wives are OK, kids and pets are off-limits.”

Tootoo: "Everyone fights a fight no one knows about and when you dive into personal issues, it's just classless. To me, that's cowardly.”

Frank, no one has any idea exactly what was said by Burrows. However, there is a line, even when trash talking, and for all we know, he very well could have crossed that line. If he was chirping anything to do with his brothers suicide, that is a line you just don't cross, and I hope Tootoo pounds Burrows face in next time they meet. There are some things you just don't bring up in trash talking, on or off the ice. I was never a fan of Tootoo in Nashville, prior to his short stint in Detroit, however the guy is a class act. Burrows on the other hand, is an a**hat. F*** Burrows...

I can't stand Burrows and came to like Tootoo a lot sadly he never really got a chance here but that wasn't his fault. Tootoo is tough and I fully expect him to deal with this like a man and pound Burrows next time they'll meet, there just wasn't and reason to make a big deal out of this...Tootoo like I've said is more than capable of handling this like a man.

Still hate how things turned out for him in Detroit. It's like Kenny tried to address a big need, but Babcock did'nt want it. Did they even talk at all before he was signed? So pointless and a s***ty way to treat a guy. Sign him then send him to the minors and buy him out.

He wasn't even given a fair shot by Babcock, that's for sure. I'd still like to have him on the 4th line of this team. Ericsson and Smith are the only guys on the team who will stand up for a teammate and they aren't exactly intimidating to the opposition...

Ha. Dude.

Ericsson is like 6'5 250 and can throw some pretty fierce punches, His size alone is intimidating.

He may not be the truculence that deters people from taking liberties with the team, but he sure as sh** is more physically intimidating than jordin tootoo is.

Just flicked Bickell like it was nothing.

I wish I knew why he doesn't fight more/ throw more big hits out. Maybe it's the Swede in him that keeps his fighting skills/big body in a check mate.

I must say tho.. Tootoo is stacking up on these one-hit knockouts quite a bit. What is this like his 4th one in his career?! He seems to be meshing well with the Devils

Ha. I would say its his inner swede keeping him from man handling people, but he bought into the red wing way. And we all know how often the red wings way calls for fighting.

His fighting capability really is epic though, I'm not all about the "truculence," but he looks like he was meant to rag doll people... IMO he's a very underrated d man around here, but I do wish he would be more physical more often. (He has seemed to pick it up this year, but he could be better) I wonder how healthy he is/isn't. Hip problems would suck as a pro hockey player.

And Tootoo has quite a good fights/tkos under his belt, which is crazy considering his size. I'm glad he's seemingly found a place in Jersey, he's not a bad hockey player, he's actually a very good fourth liner... and they were using him all the way up on the 1st line last year, like the way we use Justin rambleskater.

Edit: also, after that hit from behind Nolan laid on helm, Ericsson sent him flying seemingly effortlessly...

Could you imagine if Tootoo has Ericssons size and strength?!?!? That'd be an amazing violent human being. Ha.

Obviously I'm aware of Ericsson's size. I was referring to the fact that he's not known as a great fighter and, as you also said, he doesn't use his size often enough. Tootoo might be small in stature but when he's on the ice you know to keep your head up and not try to take a run at someone. Ericsson's presence has never stopped anyone from going after our star players.

He actually was known for his fighting when he was younger, and I said he was physical, because he is, just that I wish he would do it more often. But around and behind our net and in the corners he's one of our most physical d men.

Also, people aren't going to not take runs at star players just because tootoos on the ice. Ha. That whole deterrent thing simply because a fighter is out there isn't true anymore. Even back in the day, people would still run at high end players knowing they were gonna get beat up by bodyguards on skates. It didn't deter anything, they just had to be ready to fight after which is the same thing that happens today(even on the red wings) if e is out there he's not going to sit back after someone made a bad hit, or someone's going after one of our skilled players.

I'm 100% positive Babcock told the players not to fight. Too many guys who showed a willingness to drop the gloves stopped fighting once they got to Detroit.

Ericsson has talked about worrying about injuries from a fight, though.

Now that's the kind of Swede we need to sign.

Maltby was also a 50 goal scorer in Junior. Ericsson isn't known as a great fighter in the NHL. Tootoo can hold his own, wasn't given a fair shot in Detroit, and would be welcomed depth to a roster lacking some physicality. Also, you think knowing someone will come after you doesn't deter players from taking cheap shots? Yeah, it still happens, of course. But having a guy who can stand with just about anyone in the league makes you think twice.

Babcock gave Tootoo the kind of burial Vince McMahon would be jealous of.

I'm sure Babcock told the players not to fight or be overly physical as well. Most of the guys that were signed who were known to fight or be a physical presence were neutered when they got to Detroit. That's why I was never excited when Kenny signed any of those types of guys(May, Tootoo, Cole, etc.) because I knew they would'nt be playing that kind of game under Babs, or they would'nt be playing at all.

One of these things is not like the others...

Tootoo is a very good fighter in his own fight class but I agree if he were bigger that guy would be a lot more feared. Right now he is basically a very light version of MacIntyre, McGrattan. But I'm so happy for him that he has found his place in New Jersey it's such a sad story that it hasn't worked out here for him.

Not sure if it was Babcock or Holland who decided it might be a good idea to take out the physicality of him but whoever is responsible for it was wrong here, when Tootoo was on and threw his body around he did create some energy.

Ericsson is just a big massive hulking dude but he is also a decent fighter so that's why he doesn't have the intimidation factor of guys like Orr, Reaves, McGrattan or Looch but at least he is willing to stand up for his teammates and one of the few guys to dish out hits.

Why is it a "sad story"? If you are talking about his junior career and the death of his brother I totally get it, but what "sad" happened in Detroit?
