This forum looks very locked down. It's like watching it go from one extreme to the other. Very unfortunate. I read some of these mod responses too and can't help but shake my head. Obviously this is a very different place than what I used to enjoy.

Please. I've been here a looong time and this site is hardly locked down. The biggest change is the profanity filter and it's because it got so out of hand here Matt very reluctantly implemented it.

It's always funny to me when people long for the old times and imply it's somehow the moderating team's fault things have gone south.

We don't generate the content here. You guys do. Post garbage, the site becomes garbage. And there's a lot of garbage posted here these days. Sometimes I wonder if anyone actually comes to talk hockey.

Post great stuff, the site gets great again. Pretty simple.

The problem I have isn't the "content" (I guess this is yours given the soap box there), there is no content when people leave. My problem is more a moderating style that went from far too lax to running this place like a kiddy daycare. Obviously someone missed the memo there's quite a lot of grey area, and given in this thread every time someone suggests they have a problem with the mods the first thing you and one or two other mods do is blame posters, it's evident there's hardly an ounce of introspective reasoning here, it's purely "them vs. us" and rife full of posts like yours talking down to people. I can only wonder what you'll do when you have no posters left to kick around.

Right. So you're making the broad assumption that people are leaving because of the moderating.

If you read my posts in this thread and think there isn't any introspection, I really don't know what to say other than re-read them. I've made several long winded posts trying to explain the reasoning behind a lot of what we do here, likely to the point of boring people to tears. And there's a lot of discussion that goes on between mods because frankly it's almost all grey area.

No more posters to kick around? The power-hungry mod thing is such a myth, at least for mods on this site. As I've said in PM's and in this thread, modding is actually kind of a pain in the ass. It takes time away from why I came here in the first place, to talk hockey.

Believe it or not, my goal isn't to abuse the members here or drive them away from the site. If you have a problem with the moderating, send a PM to Matt. And I don't mean that in a dismissive "tough crap, talk to my manager" way. I genuinely mean send him a message giving him feedback.

I don't expect everyone here to like, respect or agree with everything I do. If you send Matt a PM that says "I think haroldsnepsts is a bad moderator who is driving people away from your website," he will listen. Especially if it's presented in a polite manner with specific examples to discuss.

If there are any prospective new member wondering whether to join, or even to those who've found problems with the moderators, i figured I'd share my experience here...

I've been posting for a couple years now, and I've been respectful to the mods and they've been respectful to me.

I've never once gotten no response when I asked them a question, if I had a concern and I messaged any of them, not once was I ignored, or made to feel like my opinion was below them.

If you have a suggestion for how to improve the site, and you messaged a mod with it, I guarantee any of them would forward it to matt and respond to you personally...

Most of them would probably try to hash it out and expound the idea with you.

From my perspective, There really doesn't need to be hostility about it, because any problems you have can be solved by talking rationally, which I've found a lot of people have a hard time doing...if you can logically explain your concern, do so. That's all I've seen asked in this thread and it doesn't seem to be catching on.

Other than the curse filter bringing me down, I think the mods here are fine. Every post I've had deleted has probably deserved to be, and I'm usually given pretty good leeway to make off-topic ridiculous posts

I like to think it's because the mods have developed an appreciation for my offbeat and irreverent humor the way one tolerates a younger sibling.

Right. So you're making the broad assumption that people are leaving because of the moderating.

I'm coming back to this thread because this is exactly what is happening. Today is my last post and visit here, I was singled out by a couple of your social justice veterans and Vladdy moderator arbitrarily picked what to delete and when, resulting in my looking like a jerk and him refusing to delete the posts that started it, even after I asked 3 times.

I am leaving because you mods are trying to run a kiddy daycare, I've never seen so much butt hurt in one forum, and so many posts deleted because of it. I tried coming back after the last fiasco but nothing has changed. So yes Harold, unfortunately, I am leaving because of the mods.

Thanks for the memories, and Let's Go Red Wings.

bye...

I heard that moderator haroldsnepts doesn't floss as much as his dentist recommends. Is that behavior you're comfortable with from a moderator?

Wonder what happened to him. Haven't seen him since the Franzen thread in like september.

Pretty good moderator - was always engaged.

I guess I just don't get it. I mean you guys say you want this place to be like a bunch of people sitting around, drinking a beer and discussing the Wings. But you really don't.

Look at this post.

So I guess since it's game over I can lock the GDT, right?

Yes, this game is all sorts of suckage, but so is this thread. I'm not saying we need to be cheerleaders and there's not a lot of positives in this game (give me a minute, I'll think of one), but if all you guys are going to post is "D sucks" "E sucks" "game over", I'm happy to lock this up and go do something else. It's up to you. Describe the game, the errors, what they should be doing while you're venting.

You've got mods threatening to lock the Gameday Thread in the middle of a playoff game just because he personally doesn't like the content people are posting or they aren't expressing their disappointment the 'proper' way.

Imagine if we really were sitting around in a Buffalo Wild Wings watching a game when all of a sudden someone started threatening to turn all the TVs off and dumping everyone's drinks out just because people were saying "this team sucks".

In all honesty, that's why I don't go into the GDT unless we're running away with a game. I hit the GDT to admire Mikey & Co's handiwork and maybe some pre-game comments.

There's a huge difference between "That was a bad turnover; X has been bad these last few weeks." and "X ******* sucks! If Kenny resigns him, Kenny should be fired! Kenny ******* sucks! This whole team ******* sucks!" and on and on with the sucking posts.

It gets to be like a pile-on when everyone is doing it, and that's all that's being done. Sometimes I even ignore the people I usually watch with if it gets too bad.

If the conversation is like a bunch of friends having a beer and talking about the game, that's great. If it sounds like a bunch of drunk girlfriends bitching about their men, it's not so fun. I can't speak for a mod, but I'd bet that's the distinction that was made.

I agree. I know couple years ago language was getting bad, but the mods are really ruining this site now. Also I know he's busy but you never see Matt post anymore at all. That isn't right either.

I never see him posting anymore, in fact last time I recall seeing him post was a warning in a GDT of a playoff game. I guess if I was mod then these forums would be one of my top priorities. Try and make it better then having it going in the tank which is where it's heading.

I don't think any mods have ever officially been "demoted" from here. There is actually two admins, not a lot of people know that, but there is one more besides Matt that still has his Admin status. If you look at the moderation staff list, there are likely quite a few you haven't seen or heard from in years.

As far as this thread goes, i've said my part, and i'm not going to exhaust my points any further until it becomes mundane. We leave this open for further discussion behind closed doors and try to improve where we can with what is reasonable and what isn't. It's also a good venting area for the members to fall back on when they feel like something here isn't working or things aren't being done fairly. The fact remains that it comes down to Matt, he sees everything we do and at times have overturned things he disagrees with. It's his site, his rules, and he is the deciding factor, and we fall in line with his expectations and vision of this community.
