The thing that bugs me is that while Weiss didn't impress Babcock apparently, he's not terrible. Maybe he didn't live up to his potential in his 26 games with us--though I still think that's because he played through injury--but he never hurt the team while he was on the ice like Cleary did. He's got to get some playing time, but with Franzen OK and Datsyuk coming back soon, there's just no way he's going to see ice time if he's waiting for injuries. Honestly I'd rather see Weiss play than Nestrasil, but since they play different positions that probably doesn't matter.

yea and I think babs wants Z on c so he can split up Dats and him and I like that idea I feel sorry for Weiss but until someone on that position proves otherwise his the odd man out look at our centers when Dats returns

Franzen Z Goose

Tats Dats Abby

Shehan Helm Jurco

Miller Glendening Andy

Cleary Weiss Neastersil

see what I mean? I feel its better to keep things as is

Firstly dats isn't even playing. Secondly you think Abby on the second Lind is better than Weiss? It may take a little adjustment for Weiss to play wing, but seriously the guy has so much more talent then Abby and Cleary the Abby experiment has failed horribly

Wonder if this is a passive aggressive Babs power struggle with Holland. It certainly makes Holland look bad that a player he signed for that much is riding the pine.

If it is Babs has to go immediately. Simple as that. But I highly doubt thats a reason Weiss sits. I regard Babcock as a highly professional coach who has reasons aside from a feud with his GM to play or not to play an athlete. I'm sure if Weiss is good enough and fits the current roster he would play. Let's not read to much into the situation. ;)

Eh, I'd rather have Weiss out there than Andersson. And Miller and Glendening could rotate in and out. I just feel Weiss makes us a little stronger offensively.

I specifically watched Weiss at Training camp and .....he was rusty but he wasn't bad. He just needs a few games to get him timing back. Cleary was bad...he was so slow....it was embarrassing

I have no idea what's going on but I really think Weiss deserves to be in. He's handled this entire situation with class- let him play.

Holland is Babcock's boss. Babcock could get away with it for a game or two to send a message, but the current situation would not go down as it has if Holland wasn't on board. I guarantee you that.

In any event, I'm really pulling for Weiss tonight. He seems like a good guy, handled the situation well, and we absolutely could use him if he can get back to the game he's capable of playing.

I could be wrong, but I thought he wanted over 5 to stay with us and we all thought he was a dick for not taking a moderate discount. Then we could sign this 60pt guy for less, and we were set for a cup run with Alfie... At least that is how I remember it. There has been countless bottles of whiskey, wine, and beer between there and here so it could be just a random figment of my distorted imagination.

Yeah Fil was pretty solid and I would have rather kept him - but he seemed to want to move on from babcock if memory serves me.

ah yes. sorry. you are right. Also I recall the Fil produced only at wing with dats that one year so we wanted a legit 2C that could put up points.

Yeah, but he produced when dats and z were injured as well. I truly feel that we became the hockey version of the Yankees. We thought he was the next Selanne, and when he wasn't quite that he wore out his welcome with a lot of fans. I suppose it was a grass is always greener, I am Included in this. I fear we are gonna pay long-term for this one.

you mean the Leafs.

thank god they exist or we would surely be them. we're not the yankees, we are the red sox. We had our drought and now we're decently good.

I'll post my GDT question to you here where it's a bit more relevant...

As someone not as familiar with his past, do you think he could be struggling from the pressure of playing in a market like Detroit? Historically, how tough has he been mentally? Florida's a very different market with very different expectations than Detroit. I'm wondering this mostly in light of the way he handled the injury last year. He clearly wasn't smart about dealing with it, and he spoke of the pressure of wanting to prove himself on the new team and all. If it's impacting his judgement that much, maybe it's a bigger issue for him in general. Or so I've wondered...

I'm delighted you took my comment this way. At the same time, I have no idea what's going on with Weiss. I've followed him his entire career and I'm extremely disappointed with his present self. I personally think Florida has been vastly overrated (I know, hard to believe) they have basically been running a beer-league NHL team. Weiss was there number 1 center, but unless he can learn he's probably at best our number 3 center here. that's the conclusion ive drawn. At the same time he could be a great top 6 center if he breaks this s***ty mold hes in. i believe its in him

He played 8 minutes tonight, only 6 of which were even strength. Talk about being deep in Babcock's doghouse.

I have to say I didn't see the whole game but what I saw Weiss was either invisible, or noticeable because he was turning the puck over.

I get that he could be rusty, but he looked generally out of sync with the team.

Babcock dug the dog a basement and hid Weiss in the cellar.

How many games before this did any of our players play less than ten minutes?

Ha.

But honestly.

We have team speed.

And a half.

It hard jumping into game speed after a few games, let alone years worth of games.

So who knows.

It could get better, could get worse.

I'm hoping substantially better.

It does show how good our system/team is though.

And that I'm kind of happy with.

Yeah, he looked really awkward out there. There was one instance on the PP where he was skating slowly through the neutral zone and just push the puck too far ahead of himself and gave the puck right to the other team. Coming back from injury and not playing for a while, but dealing with confidence issues is my diagnosis. I thought he looked good in the beginning of preseason - hopefully he gets back to that. Would like to see him at Center and maybe that helps him feel comfortable

Otherwise, I really wouldn't know how we could get rid of him with that contract. Could be a problem...

I do think Weiss looks better than last year. He's skating well. Just looked really rusty in this game. I hope he can get back to actually being an effective player but so far with the Wings it's like nothing really happens when he's on the ice.

His attitude also isn't really looking good. Has anyone seen him smiling yet?

Maybe the guy is still in recovery. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. But if he isn't producing by game 40, Ken Holland has to do something with him. Trade him back to Florida for a 7th and eat half his salary. Just do something.

The quotes from this article make it seem like Weiss and Babcock know quite well that getting Weiss up to game speed and comfortable with our system is going to take time, and they're both willing to take it step by step.

It's also encouraging to hear that they thing he's making progress and going in the right direction.

Even just 5 games in, it's getting tough for me to see where Weiss is going to slip into the line-up, barring any injuries. 1st and 4th lines are performing very well, The Kid line just looks snakebitten, but they're getting chances. 3rd line could use a boost, at times. Nestrasil shows flashes on one play, then shows some growing pains the next, IMO. I wonder about Helm's health... he seems a step off to me right now. Really, once Datsyuk gets back, I have no idea where and when Weiss gets to jump in.

Having Joker as the 4th line RW has allowed him to slot into C on the 2nd PK unit, which as a whole, has been fantastic. I had very low expectations for Andersson, but I have to admit, he looks much faster and is doing some solid work on the 4th line and PK.
