In Buffalo that is. And while the Wings are in town.Congrats to Dom. And pretty cool that it will be with the wings, a few of his fellow players can enjoy the experience. I still remember the night the wings announced that they traded for Dom. I yelled, "the Wings just won the cup".

So far my all-time favorite! He sure gave me more than one heart attack when he'd leave the net lol.

His tenure in Buffalo was the highest peak any goalie ever reached. The 1998 Gold Medal and 1999 Finals run was the pinnacle of that, although some would argue it was the Hart trophies. Truthfully, he could have won the Hart trophy every year during that stretch.

Well-deserved. The greatest ever*.

*This statement is my opinion. You may have your own, to which you are entitled, but this thread is about Dom. Perhaps there will be a goalie thread someday in which we can discuss other goalies. This would be lovely as there have been other good ones around Dom's level.

in his prime, I don't think there were any around his level.

Completely agree. He definitely didn't have the longevity of a Roy or Brodeur which is why he usually doesnt go down as the best ever. But IMO he had the best "prime" of any goalie in history. Just so much better then the second best goalie in the league.

My favorite player as a kid, I literally said the same thing as Blood On The Ice when the Wings got Dom. I was so happy that my favorite player was a part of my favorite team.

You're lucky I'll never get that.

Great to see Dom get his number retired!

Always loved him as a goalie whether he was with the Wings or Buffalo heck even that year with the Sens he was fun to watch, nobody played the position like Hasek did and it always was a blast to see his acrobatics in net.

Anyone have a gif of the Dom flipping Gaborik?

No comment. That's surprising, though.

A lot of experts do rank him number one all time. He did have longevity, technically, since he played for so long. It may not have always been in the NHL, which does get counted as a knock against him. But still, a lot of people rank him first.

Dom brought us that Cup. I know we were star laden, but that Colorado series was all Dom, especially game 6 and 7 shutouts... well game 7 was ours either way, but that game 6 in Denver...all Dom.

Thankfully he didn't play for any poser team who will also try to retire his number "just because" in order to get in on the celebration...ahem, cough cough, Colorado, cough, Bourque...Thankfully Detroit isn't like that.

Thats cool to hear, I've never seen his ranked #1 (not that I am looking at lists all the time lol). He definitely deserves it. I think its his post 2002 career that hurts him in the eyes of some.

I read hfboards a lot (the history section), and he's ranked number 1 by many posters there. I consider many of them to be experts based on their hockey knowledge. I wish I had some of their hockey knowledge.

And LGW still found things to be unhappy about. God for bid a goalie can't be #1 in the league night in and night out.

What does his all time ranking have to do with his Detroit days?

I don't think he was ever bad here. Average/acceptable but not outstanding, sure. But not like some complained about him.

EDIT I also think Osgood deserves more credit than most give him

EDIT 2 he was also way past his primeyears those seasons, I thought ppl had unrealistic expectations, and despite that he still played pretty good

I think the 2008 playoffs is when Hasek was most criticized. Of course, it ended with him getting benched. I wasn't here in 2002 (did the internet even work back then?), so I don't know what was being posted late in the year and during the first games against Vancouver. Guessing that was bad too.

People give ozzy far too much credit around here. He wasn't very good at all when he left Detroit.

Hasek on the other hand was awesome and as pointed out was still decent when he came to Detroit.

Agreed to an extent. It just irks me how ppl hated on having a Hasek/Osgood tandem. Half the leagues other teams would pray for a tandem like that back in the day. Evan at their age. Wings fans were always the most critical.
