What the hell's wrong with our powerplay anyway? I mean, we've got more skilled players than we've had for 4-5 years and we're somehow worse on the PP. I don't get it.

The problem is nestrasil and dat on the point and helm at wing. Am I the only one who sees that s***?

One of the best playmakes with a not so good one timer(never see it so I'm assuming) on the ******* point....

Both teams have/had a legit sniper (Neal, Ovi), a legit quarterback (Letang, Green), and a legit playmaker (Crosby, Backman). We have the playmaker (Datsyuk) and qb (Kronwall), but we are sorely missing a sniper. Why KH hasn't traded for Semin yet is beyond me. He's the puzzle piece we need in so many ways.

7m reasons why is hasn't happened. O and no roster space.

If we have 7.25 million reserved for our press box, don't you think we could get 7 million for our top line winger?

How many helmets did you guys see on the ice last night? Yeah more then I have ever seen hit the ice in a game.

I also noticed that, T. I am so sick of seeing our guys get mauled... with no consequences at all, either from officials or our players standing up for each other. I miss Mac - he would have at least glowered at the other team and made them think he was going to get them next shift...

I can't argue against your point here. We are stuck with a crappy GM, a coach who likes soccer style games, and a roster missing a top line winger, a true #1A defenseman, and an elite goaltender. I guess I gotta get over last night and just be glad we are not the Oilers. The sucky thing is I was saying to myself "We're gonna win. Howard isn't gonna choke this game away like last year" with about 5 minutes left. Then sure enough, Quincey decides to play limbo for no reason instead of crushing a much smaller forward, and Jimmy starts flopping around like a spaz.

This, and I'm surprised that zone entries are an issue with this team, and I disagree with the way that our coaches are trying to establish the offensive zone on the power play.

The past decade or so, the Wings' identity has been all about meticulous puck possession, and precision-passing, and being very patient with the puck and waiting for a hole to briefly open up somewhere and exploit it. We had the personnel to thread the needle on every play, and the intelligence to position ourselves one step ahead of the opposition. That's how the Wings dominated the previous decade. The past few years, while our roster has been largely the same, some key players retired, others got older and more broken-down, and all of a sudden the "well-oiled-machine" that was the Red Wings wasn't functioning like we expect it to. Thankfully the kids came in last year and the team was able to keep the playoff streak alive, but wait, these kids are a whole different breed of hockey player than we're used to. They're all fast and aggressive, and force the tempo of the game up on opposition. This year the Wings look very different, and its not just the roster. Its the way the team is approaching the game. Instead of relying on precision passing, and superior hockey IQ, and patience, this team is playing hard and fast (like Brannigan's love), quick on the forecheck, quick on the backcheck, playing what can almost equate to an offensive swarm. Even the defense have been getting involved, forcing the play at both blue-lines, and carrying the puck up more, instead of playing more passive and patient. It has been awesome to watch at even-strength, and even if the Wings don't necessarily have the goals to show for their work, they certainly have created chances, power play opportunities, and limited the opposition from properly setting up their game plan.

So WHY is it that our team is still holding onto this "patience, and precision-passing and higher hockey IQ" identity on the powerplay? I could understand it for a line that had Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Franzen, because they can still play that way. But Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco, Helm (if he gets another crack at the PP), Smith (if he ever gets a crack at the PP), Dekeyser. These kids are about speed. Let's play to their strength and attack the neutral zone on the power play with speed and numbers. If we have to chip the puck deep, lets continue to swarm the play and choke off the opposition. They haven't been doing that. They've been playing the patient game that isn't best suited for their skill-set. And I think if the coaching staff gave them the green-light, we would see more zones established, more scoring chances, and more goals on the power play, at least from their line. I'm willing to keep the old identity for the first power play line now that Datsyuk is back in the mold, but if line one is a change-up, line two needs to be a fastball.

I think you hit the nail on the head : The main "problem" is our portion of young players. Dekeyser and Smith are in their second full NHL season, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan Jurco and Glendening on their first and I can count the NHL games Nestrasil played with my fingers. This squad can't play the position-passing style we are used from the last Lidstrom/Rafalski years because they lack the experience for that. We have to be patient, but in two or three years I predict they can play that style again if they need to. I think right now we're a little bit limited in our offensive tactics, because as you said our young guys only weapon is their speed. But that will improve and with it the Red Wings will become a very dangerous team by that time if they can hold their core together. Right now we can only watch them mature and that includes low goalscoring and losses like that against Montreal.

Problem is Datsyuk and Zetterberg are fading. We need these young guys to learn quick.

No retaliation, no call. Nice. Not.

Hopefully the Goose is fine and doesn't miss too much time. Get well soon I would love to say some payback next time we are playing the Canadiens sadly, it won't happen.

as for the PP:

I really don't know why people were expecting a different outcome this season ? The puck-movement just doesn't come quick enough from the defense and that's not the fault of Kronwall because he just isn't a PP quarterback. Smith is trying his best (kudos to him) but obviously, it's too much to ask for at that point in his career.

Granato has had Crosby, Ovie, Letang, Backstrom to run the powerplays that's a completely different situation. Running the PP is one of the most difficult tasks for a defender because you have to lightning quick passer and be aware of your priorities ( defense first) in a couple of seconds that's incredible hard to accomplish. Lids made it look so easy because well he just was that good.

I'm sure if this continues XO will get a chance but don't expect magic right off the gate from him.

The problem yesterday hasn't just been the PP it was also the faceoff and getting outworked by the montreal smurfs in the corners << can't happen if your powerplay isn't clicking. Goaltending and defense played a good game but big E better gets his game together soon he has struggled more than usual so far.

The Wings could have the spawn of Terry Sawchuk and Dominik Hasek in net and there would be those wings fans that would complain that they are terrible. Its called "next goalie up'itis" and it has plagued Wings fans for years despite 4 Stanley Cups. There is no known cure....

Right now I would settle for the spawn of Gordie and Terrible Ted. Wonder how many stitches PK would have today if we had that spawn....
