You said it...wow. This guy is damaged goods, there should be a clause in contracts that state if you continue to fail physicals or cannot play an extended amount of time for so many years in row, your contract can be voided without penalty. He was hurt when he came here and hasn't been able to play hard since. I like the guy and would love to give him a chance, but at what point do you wash your hands and put him on LTIR? He has got to be the highest paid player in the NHL when you break down his pay per minute played...sometimes you win in UFA, sometimes you lose...I am about ready to chalk this up to a loss.

You cant penalize players for getting injured. At least for long term injuries (ie. Savard. Pronger) there is cap relief.

As far as I know this groin injury happened on the Wings. His injury on Florida was a wrist injury, not groin.

As far as your UFA comment, you hit the nail on the head. People get so hung up on teams not signing UFA's, but it happens all the time where a UFA signing blows up in a team's face. Its better to sign your players to long term contracts now a days. Its not a risk when you have seen a guy play on your team for years.

Eh...I don't think this has anything to do with UFAs, really. Your own players are just as likely to get injured. The Weiss situation is tough because he lied about his condition when we signed him. Normally that wouldn't have happened. The luck the Wings have had with UFAs is just that: bad luck.

Modano got his wrist sliced open. Weiss misled us (supposedly) about an injury and sat out most of last season. Samuelsson held us hostage because his boob hurt. I mean, there really isn't anything to be learned by this. It's just a horrible fluke and we happen to have had three of them the last few years.

It's funny how whenever a player is about to come off IR and force Holland into some potentially tough roster decisions, another one conveniently gets injured.

how convenient!

An oldie, but relevant.

Are you just assuming this?? Everyone has a physical and a medical history before they sign a contract.

He was confident (as were our doctors) that he could come back from his injury and he hasn't been able to.

That's not lying. Unless you know something the rest of us don't.

I'm frustrated with the situation but I'm not going to just assume he lied because it's convenient.

I can't imagine Weiss, his agent, nor the Detroit Red Wings would have allowed contracts to be signed if there wasn't confidence that he could make a comeback.

Now all we can do is manage the situation as best as possible and for Weiss to either get back to work, or hang 'em up.

The phantom DL/IR is an often used tool in most major sports, however in Weiss' case I believe he's actually hurt.

Here is a breakdown of the numbers last season.

Stephen Weiss 26GP, 2G, 2A, $4.0 million cap

Brian McGrattan 76GP, 4G, 4A, $750K cap

Wait Brian McGrattan has the potential of being a top six center?!?! No?

...oh wait, neither does Stephen Weiss currently. :ninja:

What do Brian McGrattan and Stephen Weiss have in common? Neither have a chance at cracking the Wings line-up!!!

*rimshot*

Thank you ladies and germs, I'm here all weak. Try the fried rice.

yes, i'm aware i spelled week wrong. it's a joke. probably better than the others.

Actually he played three times as many games in an easier league, and only got twice as many points. Also Weiss has a cap hit of $4.9million not $4million

But he never played with either Datsyuk or Zetterberg. Weiss did. Besides, the West was much tougher than the East last season. How can you say it was an easier league?

Weiss is quickly turning into the forward version of DiPietro.

Just not as good looking.

While this seems to be a pointless debate over Weiss vs. McGratten?! and I'm pretty sure you're mostly joking, I'm pretty sure Weiss has played very little or not at all with Z and Datsyuk. He played last year mostly with a combination of Franzen, Alfredsson, Nyquist, etc.

Wow, what talentless linemates poor Weiss has had. :sleepy:
