The Devils might be willing to trade forward for forward... and Lamoriello seems to prefer guys over age 30 on his forward corps.

Only 5 of 13 forwards are under 30. 3 of those 5 are nearing 30 -- including Brunner -- and no one on the active roster was born before 1990.

Danny Cleary! Pack your bags!! You and your walker are headed to th' ROCK!

I know you're kidding about Cleary but the funniest part of the whole thing is he has a NTC.

Are you sure it's not an "implied" no trade clause: no one will trade us for him?

As much as I like Brunner...he makes Hudler and Fillipula both look heavy on the puck. I can see him getting 15 goals in the first half of the season, then never scoring again. Ever. Not a long term solution.

Apparently Kindl has one of those. :P

but according to capgeek it's the real deal. Between Cleary, Franzen, and Zetterberg. Which one would you think has a NTC??

Oh and Weiss too (I should probably get this back on topic).

I mean, I know it sounds completely crazy when you write it that way. But it's actually not as strange as it sounds when you think about it. Z and Franzen were given implied "lifetime contract". It was pretty clearly understood by both the players and GM that those contracts were for the rest of their careers. So no need for the NTC.

Can anyone compare/contrast Helms groin injury when he attempted to return vs Weiss'? Do we know enough details to compare the two?

For instance, I don't remember how long Helm was out with his last groin issue. It would be nice to know, since we're all writing Weiss off for the year...

Helm was a mysterious back injury, then groin upon the comeback, where as Weiss is a hernia issue and groin upon the comeback...so is Weiss' more of the initial injury lingering on, or just a standard "haven't played in a while so of course my groin's sore"?

Weiss will continue practicing with the Wings for the next week and then play a game with Grand Rapids on November 22nd against Lake Erie Monsters in hopes to get back in the Wings lineup for the November 24th game against Ottawa.

Let's hope this conditioning stint is more successful than the last...

So if he makes it through this time he will be back in the lineup. Hopefully he gets more than 9 minutes of ice time this time.

Weiss is a waste - been a while since he had a productive or even complete season - let the kids play and stop wasting a roster spot

$4.9 million this year and the next three after that isn't going to just vanish. They aren't just going to throw their hands in the air and give up on him. Yes, it has been a ridiculously terrible signing thus far, but they pretty much have to try to get whatever production they can out of that significant sunk cost.

If he continues to do nothing, does anyone think they'll take the cap hit and buy him out?

We've got Nyquist, smith, and Jurco to resign soon.

Not a chance. No one wants our damaged goods just as we don't want the damaged goods of other teams.

As of right now, I am hoping that Weiss can get healthy and start producing for us like he did for Florida. Thats all any of us can do at this stage.

I said buy him out.

Not trade him.

As in take the $1-2million cap hit it would cost us just to clear the rest of the money out.

There is no buy out in the NHL. I really haven't read the entire agreement with the NHL though. Maybe there will be one offered down the road. I certainly wish there was though. Sorry I misunderstood you on that. :)

No worries.

And you can buy out any player.

The league offered two compliance buyouts after the new CBA for contracts signed before, but a buy out of Weiss would cost us a little over a million dollars for two seasons, and a bit over 2 million for one of the seasons remaining.

The kids are already playing. If Weiss can get healthy (admittedly a big if), it would be a huge addition to a team that still lacks firepower at forward. It's not like Weiss would be blocking any imminent prospect coming up from Grand Rapids. Dan Cleary and Joakim Andersson are pretty damn replaceable for someone like Weiss, even considering Pav would take one of those two spots.

Or maybe he just hasn't play hockey in a long time.

This. If we're going to discredit the goal he scored 19 seconds in, we're going to have to discredit the sloppy play, too. Neither is a true indicator of how he's going to perform when he's up to full speed (should that ever happen). I'd like to see how he looks through 5-10 games, not just one.
