I wonder how long before we can put this "the only way to win in today's game is to draft and develop" argument to bed. Jason Garrison, Ben Bishop, Brendan Morrow, Anton Stralman, Matt Carle, Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, and Valtteri Filppula are all pretty significant contributors to this team and were drafted and developed elsewhere. Same is true of both teams in the Stanley Cup last year as well. Free agency and trades can add significantly to your team's success.

No doubt about that. A winning team needs the fight blend of homegrown talent, trades and UFA's. When it comes to UFA's, a solid foundation with upside needs to be there to make it an attractive destination. Wings are getting closer to that. Sure games like this are frustrating, but for the most part there has been a whole lot of promise. Combine the talent in the system we have now, and a new arena on the way, this will be a place people wanna come to play again.

Not saying you in particular, but many Wings fans do. But honestly, many teams look good and have a lot of talent and never are able to put it together and win it all. I think Yzerman is looked upon more favorably because of his playing career as opposed to what he has done as a GM. He's made many good moves, a few not so good and it remains to be seen whether Tampa will be a dynasty or a really good team with a lot of talent.

Tampa just has so much depth, it is scary. They scored 7 goals last night and Stamkos didn't get either one of them. It is impressive. No GM makes 100% great moves. But Stevie has made a lot more good than bad. Bishop being a shinning example IMO.

And Tampa won the Cup when?

Is that truly your only barometer of success? I think the original point was well taken -- Stevie has complemented his drafting with good moves in free agency and trades. Kenny "kicks tires" and mostly fails, but defaults to then saying building through the draft is the way to go anyways.

You need balance to build a contender. Especially when you draft mid-to-late first round for two decades.

You realize there are 29 other teams in the league, right? An up and coming team doesn't have to win a cup to be a great up and coming team. That is what an up and coming team is. A team that is well on their way to becoming a perennial contender.

I saw you argument earlier in the thread about that and actually agree with you. But that hardly makes them a bad team. They're a good team, with a lot of external talent, who has nevertheless not won a Cup.
