Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

He's more like Kirk Maltby.

Not really. He's a little bit like Maltby in attitude, but his skill set is almost entirely like Draper. Both Draper and Glendening are/were matchup defensive centers, with excellent faceoff and penalty killing capabilities.

The only thing Maltby and Glendening have in common is that they're both pretty big douchebags lol. They love chirping dudes, being quasi-dirty, and facewashing guys.

On second thought, Glendening is a Maltby/Draper love child. A perfect combination of the two.

Yandle is clearly the best of the three but Green is the best option for Detroit in my opinion...

Funny part is Glendening is super humble and polite off the ice

Depends on how you look at it.

Green would be cheaper via trade and he's a righty. But he's also a UFA and we all know how lucky the Wings have been signing UFA blueliners.

Yandle is in his prime, under (a great) contract and would be part of this team core for a few years, at least. Plus he's better defensively than Green.

So, in my world, the best D man who also has the best contract would be the best option for Detroit.

Myers isn't even a factor in this conversation. Me no want.

Well if we can land Green or Yandle and bump Ericsson out of the #2 D spot I'll be happy. Seriously Big E's stats: 31 GP 0G 7A and -2 I know its not all about points or +/- when evaluating dmen but come on don't we expect a little more in Detroit from our top pairing?

Well I can tell you this. Mike Green won't be bumping anyone out of that #2 D spot.

any interest in Wisniewski? I know he has a modified NTC and would probably have to submit a list of teams or something, but instead of blowing the wad on a #2 guy, maybe spend a bit less on a better #3?

Don't know, I am just looking at the bottom dwellers and seeing who may be looking to make a deal...speaking of bottom dwelling, WTF happened to Colorado?

Right. I knew there was something I didn't get. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'll defer to your wisdom. Mike Green would be an excellent #2 Dman.

According to some Kronwall can't handle #1 spot either

Highly doubt we show any interests after his comments about Detroit's management.

I don't get all the talk about guys not being "top pairing" defenders. It's similar to having a forward like Abdelkader playing with Zetterberg-Datsyuk. Parity causes teams to look for balance through their line-ups - chemistry, spreading the talent, whatever. Tons of teams in the NHL do it.

Suter-Brodin/Spurgeon, McDonagh-Girardi, Bouwmeester-Pietrangelo, Orprik-Carlson, Martin-Letang, etc. All of those pairings have a defensive/shutdown guy whose numbers aren't anything to write home about. That's the NHL today. The pairings putting up big numbers like Giordano-Brodie or Markov-Subban are becoming a rarity in the league.

Based on what? Does Tippett see him as his team's undisputed #1 defenseman? Does Tippett count on him to shut down the opposition's top guns every night? Is Yandle Tippett's top option for any and every conceivable situation and assignment? Has Yandle shown he's more than capable of being a solid #1 on a perennial contender?

I'm all about the Yandle love - but Kronwall is better. He's a complete defenseman, a legit #1. He's one of the best in the business.

I think he'll cost more than that, but not much more. (Certainly nowhere near what Yandle would cost.) The problem is, his cap hit's $6M and we only have about half that in cap space. Moving Kindl would get us just about there, but no one wants a #6 defenseman with a $2.4M cap hit who's under contract until 2017.

Don't get me wrong I love Kronwall and I think he's just as valuable to this team as datsyuk and Zetterberg. But Yandle has a skill set that's hard to come by and I think this forum is undervaluing him. You're going to want this guy on the ice a lot it just makes the whole team better, he's not a sheltered minutes kind of guy. I think if you find him the right partner he can be effective defensively against top line opponents just because he can play the puck so well Edited by joesuffP

Honestly, if this team does manage to grab a Yandle or Green, my first inclination would be to put them on the 2nd pairing next to DeKeyser. In my mind, on paper, those seem like a solid pairings. Then I look down at that 3rd pairing and it's Smith-Quincey staring me right in the face. I wouldn't want to break up Kronwall-Ericsson, but I sure as heck don't wanna see the Smith-Q pairing. This is assuming that he wouldn't be moved in the deal, otherwise it would be a different situation.

That's simple you out smith with kronwall since it worked well lasted year then we have a very very solid 3 deep defense lines:

I'm not one to think he can;t handle the #1 spot...I just think he needs a pure stay at home defender so that it will free him up a bit more to get back to his game...Not that what we are seeing is not his game but I would LURV to see some big kronwallings again.

Both Quincey and Smith were struggling at the time they were put together last season which was a recipe for disaster. They're both playing much better hockey since then, and I don't think they would struggle the same way if it were tried again.

I think Kronwall - Ericsson, DeKeyser - Green, Smith - Quincey would be a great top 6.

These pairs make the most sense to me on a given night. You could always flip flop Green with Smith (situationally) in order to protect Green's minutes if you needed to.

Washington doesn't need to trade Green, and unless they drop out of the playoffs by the trade deadline I think they're going to keep him unless they're bringing in guys who can help them this year and down the road.

They don't need to move him, but if they hold on to him, I think it's very likely they lose him for nothing in the summer. Dude could make a killing in free agency. And, really, isn't the writing kind of on the wall? Niskanen and Orpik get those massive deals (and I'd say Green's a bigger name than either of them)...he's playing on the third pairing (while carrying a $6M cap hit)...the Caps have a good group of defensemen (Carlson, Niskanen, Alzner, Orpik, Schmidt, Orlov, Madison Bowey)...he's probably going to want to get as many dollars and years as he possibly can on this next contract because he'll be 30 soon and, well, look at his injury history.....

I agree about the playoffs, though. If they're pretty firmly in the playoff picture in late February, I don't think they trade him. If they're not? They probably trade him, and not for a whole lot (i.e. a few futures).

just went back a saw the "trade" offer of Jurco, Sheahan, 1st for Yandle...... BLAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!

WTF is this guy Shea Weber? Sheahan is untouchable IMO. Why would Holland trade Sheahan and keep Helm? We do NOT need Yandle that bad. I just assume continue along season with our mishaps on D and just promote our guys next season or see what can be had on July 1st. These guys are the sole reason the Wings kept the streak alive last season, they are a huge part of why they are where they are now. I know this is not a reputable source. but if Holland trades all that, especially Sheahan for Yandle, then this club in doomed. Sheahan is untouchable. PERIOD. Jurco is borderline untouchable. I don't know why Holland is so loyal (or lovesick) to the Swedes, but honestly if it came down to a choice (and we all know Holland's history of choices involving Swedes) I would choose to trade Nyquist over Sheahan. Why? Well, not that I want to trade Nyquist, but he would bring back the highest return, and although his offense is kicking right now, I believe we have two or three guys in GR that could replace that soon. Sheahan is a combination of speed, size and scoring. I prefer to trade Helm over any of the "kids." But hands of stone may not garner much of a return. If s*** is going to be that expensive, then just ride out the season (we aren't doing that bad (barring more injuries)) and promote within or sign a UFA. There are a nice crop of UFA d-men out there available this summer. Screw trading our established kids.

I don't really disagree. I guess I just feel that with a guy like him, you should maximize his value, get him playing to his strengths, put him in a position to not just succeed but thrive. He could probably do fairly well as a first-pairing guy, but then he's going to put up fewer points than he would on the second pairing. He'd be playing those hard minutes so that we could free up...Kronwall? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep running Kronwall in his normal role and let Yandle play easier minutes on the second pairing?

Kronwall is, in a perfect world (i.e. on a stacked team), a second-pairing defenseman. Why? So he can focus more on the offensive side of his game and give us 50 points. Maybe Yandle has what it takes to become what Kronwall has become (I think he does), but, for now, I'd want both versions of Kronwall at our disposal: the #1 guy (2014 Kronwall), and the second-pairing guy (2014 Yandle channeling 2008 Kronwall). Does that make sense? My mind's kinda foggy today.

just to add to that, not saying Holland shouldn't go after a D-man still, but do not "sell the farm" for one. If come deadline, a team is desperate to dump one for a draft pick then that is fine, but NO, NO, NO to trading our future. If we need to include a prospect, then fine, but even then the crop to pick from is limited. Pulkinnen, maybe. Backman, maybe. Ferraro, Callahan sure. But that is about it.

Oh ya, another reason Nyquist would be more ideal to trade over Sheahan, he is a RFA this off season, he will for sure garner a HUGE raise. I know the cap is supposed to go up, but it will hurt giving this guy all of the increase...and he will be worth it on the market, so dangle him out there if you must, but I'd still rather just go forward with our guys and see who is desperate at the deadline. This year I hope it isn't Holland! (again!)

As much as I agree nyquist would get the best return.

It's safe to say he is a lifer. He is the next great swede in the line after lids z now him for each generation of red wings.

I honestly don't see holland making any sort of major trade.

A. That's his history.

B. If he didn't make a trade when we REALY REALLY REALLY needed one. Why make one now when he is clearly confident in his in house guys and development? No sense in trade 2-4 prospects if he thinks they're going to pan out. It is better to just patient then.
