Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Molulson crossed my mind when they talked about him tonight.

Sabres fans on hfboards are souring on him too, saying they don't think he's part of the future...

If we can get Petry for Kindl, I am OK with it. He's not a savior, but it would be an upgrade still, and we get rid of Kindl.

Petry for Kindl straight up will never happen.

Rumor was they wanted a 2nd and/or a 3rd (I don't remember exactly)

And wed have to move a d man to get him in the lineup.

Kindl and a 2nd would be a pretty good trade for both sides

We draft really well. That second round pick is worth a lot to us. I can see Ken Holland using it in a trade, but not for a #5 defenseman.

Plus, the rumors I'm reading now are saying that Holland wants someone "long term", and "not a rental". As such, I don't see them targeting Petry until the off season (if at all).

Kindl + 2nd or Smith for Petry seems like fair value to me.

I understand some people are high on Smith. If I'm being objective about this, he and Smith have similar PPG and Petry has more of a physical edge to his game. Smith was selected 27th overall in his draft year, Petry was 45th in his. Petry is only two years older than Smith, as well.

That said, I do think teams like Pittsburgh will offer more, especially with Maatta out for the season. Not to mention, if there is one guy I would count on wanting to come to Detroit this off season, it would be Petry. With some of the bigger names, I would think that spending assets to get them here would be a smart move, but I'm not sold on having to move assets to get Petry in Detroit. Only issue with that scenario that we'd have 8 defenders (Kronwall, Ericsson, DeKeyser, Quincey, Smith, Petry, Kindl and Lashoff) on the team, with Ouellet ready to come up. Some decisions would have to be made.

I'm thinking if someone starts a couple blogs praising kindl and talking about how on a new team he would be an elite dman maybdwe can entice a trade

Would that work for Smith as well? Could we sell them as the next Weber-Suter?

WITH HOWARD HURT, RED WINGS MAY NEED HELP

The Detroit Red Wings suffered a serious blow when goaltender Jimmy Howard, recently selected to appear in the NHL All-Star Game, suffered a partial groin tear. The 30-year-old Howard is expected to miss at least two weeks, possibly longer.

With Howard on injured reserve and backup Jonas Gustavsson still sidelined by a shoulder injury, Jared Clinton suggested there could be talk of the Wings pursuing St. Louis Blues netminder Martin Brodeur. Clinton, however, notes the 42-year-old Brodeur’s woeful stats are reason enough for the Wings to avoid the former Vezina winner.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wonders if Wings GM Ken Holland might contact the Buffalo Sabres and inquire into the availability of Jhonas Enroth as short-term relief. Enroth and fellow Sabres netminder Michal Neuvirth are both UFAs in July and there’s speculation one of them could be dealt by the trade deadline.

ESPN.com’s Craig Custance reports Holland isn’t panicking over the plight of his goalie tandem. Holland intends to use call-ups Petr Mrazek and Tom McCollum as replacements. Holland could be justified in his confidence in Mrazek, as the 22-year-old has posted up decent numbers in limited starts this season.

Custance has the right idea. There's no reason for us to make a trade for a goalie.

Mrazek has a .920 save percentage and a 2.16 goals against. Not only are those numbers solid for a #3 goalie, but they're on par with some excellent #1 goalies. Its tough to gauge exactly where he stands because NHL.com doesn't include Mrazek or a handful of others on the list of goalies they rank statistically (presumably because of limited starts), but there are only 5 goalies listed that have a better GAA than 2.16. The .920 save percentage is presently the same as Howard's, who is sitting at 12th in the league at that category. Mrazek is obviously a rookie goalie, and he's going to make rookie mistakes out there, whether that's being too aggressive, too passive, poor rebound control, whatever. But through the ten games that he's played this year, as well as the nine he played last year, Mrazek has proven to be a solid goalie that can be relied upon. The only question now is whether he can do it as a #1 goalie, and not a backup getting the occasional start.

It's kind of ridiculous to even suggest it given Mrazek has better numbers than Brodeur, has started almost as many games as him and we would be getting Monster back soon

Writers and trade spec-u-lators gotta write and speculate about sumthin'

Apparently the Coyotes are likely to deal Vermette and Yandle. It's also looking like O'Reilly may very well be moved.

We're not getting any of those three, mind you.

It makes sense to trade Yandle for O'Reilly straight up, which I've seen speculated in many a rumor mill.
