Nestrasil Waived / Claimed by Hurricanes

Jesusberg, I love games :w00t2:

Do I choose one label (Play, Bench, Waive) for each player? or can I use one more than once?... lol

It's like that whole Kill, Marry, Bang game... each option can only be used once. It's supposed to be a tough decision, but I don't think it works in this case

The fact is, we lost him for nothing. A player with potential, one of our values 3rd round picks (ones Holland refuses to trade because he finds such valuable players there.) Plus, there is no need to lose a player with untapped potential for nothing at all...especially at the price of keeping Cleary and Kindl. Both of whom bring NOTHING to the ice with them. Make Cleary a coach if he is so valuable in the locker room. Sure, Nestrasil wasn't the next Tatar or even Jurco, but why waste your valuable drafted players that are deemed SOOOOO important to rebuilding this team, just so you can keep Cleary? What next, put Pulkkinen on waivers next season just because you promised Alfredsson a spot if he wants to play? Holland screwed the pooch on this one. He screwed the pooch on Jarnkrok (although he had to) and we are out on two players with the potential to be very good players in the NHL. Doesn't matter, we have ZERO control over it, but all along 99% of us said that if we start losing kids because of Cleary and Quincey, then we would be pissed, so there is no need to ask us why we are pissed now. Weren't you guys here when Holland was quoted saying, we aren't going to keep Oullet in the lineup at the expense of Jakub Kindl. It shows right there where his loyalty is, he will risk exposing players to waivers to keep his veteran. He kept Cleary over Nestrasil, and it won't be the last time he f***s this team up....no wonder Babcock won't re-sign...

Most people hadn't even heard of Nestrasil a year ago and now he has all this "potential" and mentioning him in the same breath as Pulkkinen and other prospects.

Gimme a break...

Why are people comparing Nestrasil to Cleary? Cleary isn't the reason Nestrasil got exposed and claimed on waivers. Cleary wasn't going to be waived, nor should he have been. Cleary brings so much more than what he shows on the ice to this team, the experience and leadership he provides, on and off the ice, can't just be replaced, and certainly not by a 23 year old kid. If not Nestrasil, Jurco would have been sent down, and maybe in hindsight that would have been the better choice. But where is all of this upside that everyone sees in Nestrasil? I just don't get it. He was a body on the ice for 13 games, a big body sure, but that's about it. He could barely crack the Grand Rapids line up last season and to be honest should have never cracked our lineup this season. It would have been nice to see him clear and provide some support down in Grand Rapids this year but in reality he probably never would have cracked the Wings lineup on a full time basis, not this year, not next year, not ever. We have a ton of more skilled guys knocking on the door, he will not be missed. We even have a player that we signed in the offseason who is similar in stature but much more skilled, in Tomas Nosek. Good luck in Carolina Nestrasil, unfortunately you will probably end up down in Charlotte after 30 days...

If Cleary makes that much of a difference off the ice then the better decision before the year would have been to make him a coach. Now Nestrasil may not have been a game changing prospect but he was still a young asset that the Wings lost for completely nothing. Losing young assets for nothing is how you get bad hockey teams. The fact that its being reported that quite a few teams put in a claim show that he was viewed as a good prospect. Put Cleary on waivers and I bet you he clears even if on there for a week.

If Cleary wasn't on the team then some other prospect, likely Callahan would have been up, and we still would have lost one of the two of Callahan or Neatrasil to waivers. This doesn't have as much to do with Cleary being on the team as it does Jurco being eligible to bypass waivers, but not be sent down (which if you're into the whole "the best man plays" philosophy, was the correct decision). Anyway, Neatrasil was riding pine here. Now he may at least have a chance to continue his career.

5 pages for Nestrasil... for Nestrasil... c'mon guys!

Let's not use "potential" in the same sentence as Nestrasil... This is pathetic. He played ONLY because of his size. Babs is trying to balance this team with what he have. We have a skilled team but we don't have muscle... Babs tried to use Nesty like he used Bert last season but it didn't worked well.

People are complying about Abdel on the 1st line... he has the size and he's willing to chase the puck, he going to dirty areas and he's creating space for Dats, that's why Dats likes him. Do we need more skilled forwards? We need some Power Forwards.

Nestrasil is/was and will be a NO FACTOR.

wings1940, you clearly haven't been watching Cleary the few games that he has played, and you are just going on blind hate from the past couple years. He has been playing great so far this season, and definitely better than Nestrasil, and Andersson too in my opinion...

I am not a Cleary hater at all, and while I don't think we should have brought him back this year, I don't have a blinding hatred for him at all. I even mildly defended the signing last year. But I think using "great" is going more than a little too far when describing his play this year.

Has he been better than the haters expected? Sure, absolutely. Has he really been great? No. Could we have done without him? Oh, indeed.

Again, I like the guy and have been a fan of his for the most part over the years, but I have no faith in him being able to play down the stretch at even the moderate level he's played at thus far, and I don't think that's an unreasonable standpoint to take given his age and struggles the last few years. He's a wildcard at best to be around when the playoffs hit. I get why Holland did what he did, but I think it would've been better for the team had Cleary not taken Holland up on his offer. The team is turning over a new leaf and I think the team would have been better served having our new kids in the lineup on a regular basis with the core leadership group on this team that stands to be around and playing most nights for at least the next few years. Cleary is not a part of that group, and he absolutely has complicated our ability to have team we probably should have on at least a small level.

It's silly to get too hot and heavy about losing Nestrasil because he wasn't much to lose even if he has some potential, and it's not fair to flat out blame the Cleary deal on it. But you really can't be surprised people are running with it given the way things have gone. It might not be wholly logical or rational, but compared to a lot of the bulls*** slung around here, it's fairly understandable. Cleary wasn't going to get exposed, but as said, back in the summer he should've said thanks for the opportunity and walked and it'd be one less complication on a team that has had too many avoidable roster complications the last few years.

Cant say that with 100% certainty. You cant develop size but you can develop the rest of your game. The kid might not have been the best option this year but he has improved every year the past 4. Come a season or two down the road he could be that power forward your mentioned. Instead we get Cleary for another 3/4 a season where he will be in the press box most of it with a healthy roster and Jurco who has been downright awful and really needs to be in the AHL working on his game.

You can't teach PF to be a PF. It's who you are. You have balls or you don't have it. He's not Wilson, Kassian, Virtanen kind of player.

He shouldn't have been playing ahead of a healthy Weiss.

Weiss? At this point I can see people here 2 years from now bitching he hasn't had a shot yet ... Weiss isnt our saviour and never will be ... He has more of a chance being sent home in 2 yrs than being in detroit Edited by nyqvististhefuture

There's a lot of people upset that "we lost him for nothing..." attached to damning of Holland in GMing abilities. There was also a few comments saying that it seemed that the Wings have lost more players for nothing than others. That got me thinking and I was bored so I did some research on Wikipedia. Here's all the players that have been claimed off waiver from each team since the beginning of the 2010-11 season. It shows that we are right in the middle of the pack and it happens to all teams (except the Bruins, apparently).

Am I the only one that thinks Cleary has looked fine so far this season? Better than Nestrasil even?

No you're not. I think a big part if how Babcock doesn't have his blue love for him thisnyear. Playing a couple games a month when he fills in for injury seems to be the perfect way to use him.

I don't mind him as the 13th forward I just had a problem when he was used too much. He just can't handle it any more.
