CBJ's Jack Johnson files for bankruptcy

Ya you're correct. The school that dismissed the day after he got arrested for DV not convicted only arrested.

Pretty sure that's higher standards than every other school. What team do you cheer for? We can have this debate all day and will gladly show you how michigan is superior.

Can you explain? I'm unaware of this incident.

What's superior about it? Higher standards? Higher standards in what? Football?

Ethics and morals. Something a lot of people lack today.

My first question was an honest one... ethics and morals doesn't really explain it... Johnson was arrested for domestic violence?

EDIT: Just curious, how you were planning on arguing that u of m is somehow more ethical and moral than other institutions?

No someone made a childish backhanded comment about frank Clark and michigan. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH HOCKEY OR THIS THREAD.

Clark got arrested for DV then the next day kicked off the team. And included in his childish

Comment it's suppose to be an insult on their integrity which in reality it's kind of a compliment that's some schools actually do the right thing.

Higher standards in that I went there and YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH

I see both sides of this one, but I've gotta say--hiring a professional that is skilled in handling large amounts of money does not equal not trusting your parents. My mom is my favorite person in the world, great at her job, and I trust her beyond any other human on this earth. That being said: she knows f*** all about handling millions of dollars (not to mention she can't remember where she put her own glasses half the time), and I would never place her in that position because she would feel terrible when she inevitably screwed everything up. Add that to the fact that JJ's parents sound like absolute trash cans, sprinkle in a little bit of why the hell would he give them power of attorney and you have one big WTF Pot Pie. Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?

Sad situation either way--hopefully he learns from this and moves on, but from the sounds of it he'll unfortunately be moving on without his parents.

Maybe this was mentioned, but I'm pretty sure the NFL has mandatory financial planning for rookies to prevent horrible stuff like this from happening. It's basically to teach them how fast you can burn through money, warn them about scams/investments and, most importantly, making sure that they have an untouchable nest egg after retirement. Whether the player actually follows through with this plan is not guaranteed.

While I agree that it is never a good idea to let parents handle your money, there are cases where athletes have been screwed by "professionals" too. Bobby Orr for example who was one of many players represented by Alan Eagleson. Dave Semenko also thought his earnings were handled by a pro.

Haha. This is very close to being my favorite post of all time. Absolutely hilarious. T.Low once posted something totally awesome about his wife being superior to Elisha Cuthbert, and that still takes the cake. But this is soundly in the 2 spot.

I knew there was something especially intelligent about you ;)

I'd give my mom every cent every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I'd likely get double back.

I don't know what lead to him firing Pat Brisson, but it doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad thing for him. Agents negotiate contracts, they don't necessarily give financial advice. In someone like Jack Johnson's case, he may have felt Brisson was spending too much time with his "star" clients and not enough with him. As far as Crosby, Kane, Toewes, etc, they have good contracts, we don't know how or who is managing their money. Just because they haven't filed for bankruptcy doesn't mean they're necessarily making all the right moves with their money either.

If anyone else saw the ESPN 30 for 30, Broke, you'd see that there are agents, lawyers, investors, parents, siblings and others who have taken advantage of athletes. Many of them who were thought of as "professional" and "trustworthy". Sometimes it's a deliberate scam, other times it's an attempt to turn a good amount of money into an obscene amount of money in what may have seemed like a good investment. Many of them often mistakenly thought their agent was "handling" things.

In any case, sounds like this all happened relatively quickly and it isn't like he let it go on for years before he noticed anything. I hope it all works out well for him.

Haha, I got the least important of my degrees at Central yes, but I have no special affinity for the school or its sports teams. As a matter of fact, I don't have half a f*** to give about college rivalries in general. But I do think it's funny when others get riled up about it.

Thanks for the reminder though, I really should change my location in my profile.

I got my master's degree at Georgetown, which is why I live in DC now. But to be honest, I probably had waaaaaaaaay more fun in Mt. Pleasant. Nobody drinks like they drink in cold weather climates.

That's why us Canadians are so friendly...we're just drunk all the time... ;)
