Are the Wings a Contender?

That right there sums it up perfectly. Fans in general tend to hold on to the bad moments for way too long and forget the good ones. A player can have a game where he makes an amazing play to set up a goal, and then he makes an untimely turnover... Which one do most fans remember? Add on top of that, a player that has already been labeled, it's not easy to drop that label...

I wish we could land Yandle. Do we really have a true offensive defenseman in the pipes other than Sproul? I wish we could part with some defensive D prospects to snag him.

I'd say our true offensive D prospects are Sproul, Ben Marshall, and Joe Hicketts. (And Adam Almqvist.)

As for Yandle...I think it's safe to say he's a total pipe dream; he'd likely cost Nyquist or Tatar, and he can become a free agent at the end of next season (so we might only get one full season with him).

Our true offensive D prospects are Sproul and three undersized guys that will likely never play a game in the NHL? Hicketts maybe has the best shot at making the NHL, but I think even that's a stretch. Sure, he's ripping up the Western Hockey League right now, but that means nothing. He will find it very difficult to adapt to the American Hockey League, let alone the National Hockey League... I would be surprised if he is ever anything more than a career minor leaguer, and the same goes for Marshall. I also don't expect Almquist to head back to North America, I see him floating around in Europe, from the KHL to the SHL. Backman has some offensive instincts, if he ever makes his way back over, I think he could be a decent option to provide some offense. Jensen is more of a two-way defender, as is Ouellet, but both could provide some offensive punch...

Sproul is our only true offensive weapon that has a legit shot at making the NHL. He will be a stud in a few years...

As for Yandle, I agree, never gonna happen...

We'll know if we're a contender after the next two weeks.

It starts tonight, at home against the top team in the East. Then we start a long road trip against some tough Western Conference teams, including Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim and finish it off against Nashville.

The end of the trip also coincides with the trade deadline. I wonder if Ken Holland is waiting to see how this trip shakes out before deciding to "go for it" and trade assets to add a missing piece.

If we come out of this trip with a solid winning record, and Kenny brings in some top tier defence I will be booking holiday time in late May.

I believe we absolutely are, and we are going to be a hard team to beat in 7. There are obvious factors why I like this years team A LOT (the usual...Dats, Z, Helmer, Jimmy, etc...), but I think the combination of skilled youth, speed, depth (including goal tending depth), and attention to details (corner play, cycling down low, blocking shots, etc...) gives us a really strong look at the cup this year.

However, i will say that in the last month I've been disappointed that we haven't performed well against the elite teams in the league. We beat Nashville in mid-Jan which was great...but I really would have liked to see better performances against TB and Pitt...two teams in our conference who we'll likely face if we have aspirations of winning the cup. I honestly would have taken losses to the Panthers or Sabres in lieu of a better effort/wins against our conference heavyweights.

Lol. We will upset whoever we play in the first. With a couple tweaks we make a long run. Mark it down.

The sad part is, we won't ever be the underdogs to the media. If we end up in 3rd, and play the Habs, everyone will say they're the underdogs and need to prove themselves against us.

We might win the first round. We are not tough enough to play against to go deep. And we don`t have a good enough top pairing D unit. All of this could be fixed before the deadline but I don`t think Holland has the stones to make those kinds of moves. We have found this out all year when we have played teams above us in the standings.

I seriously think if we can sneak Petry out of Edmonton for Kindl+conditional 3rd (becomes a 2nd in the wings win a round), that we could do some damage. We need to limit E's minutes, and badly need a RH shot. It's a perfect fit, I'd love a depth forward since it seems like Franzen won't be coming back this year, but I'm not sure Kenny dives into the forward market. Don't like #18 in the line-up, but there are guys in GR pushing. So if one of those guys bump him out, I think we're looking pretty good up front.

How about making the playoffs first?

There is still a lot off hockey to be played and lots of points to be had.

I don't think they are a contender and too easy to play against which will be exploited if they make the playoffs.

Right now the wings would be facing Pittsburgh ....

Unless the wheels completely fall off, were making the playoffs. Plus, as of now we'd be playing Tampa, not Pittsburgh.

Oh no! You mean we'd be playing a team that consistently under performs in the playoffs, with a goalie that'd only pedestrian when it matters, a mediocre defense, and who haven't had a single bit more success than the Wings lately, despite having two of the top five players in the world?

I'm sure Babs' and the boys are paralyzed with fear.

Then the score so is wrong it shows the wings at 5 and Pittsburgh at 4.

The overall standings don't matter for the playoffs anymore. It's a divisional playoff since last season. 1 in the conference plays the lowest of the wildcard teams, 2 plays the highest wildcard. 2/3 in the division play. So as of now it'd be MTL/BOS, TB/DET, NYI/WSH, AND PIT/NYR.

Ah thank you thought they've changed it again. Um Tampa would be even tougher.
